I bought this book after giving birth to my twins when I found myself battling postpartum depression. I thought I was a terrible person and horrible mother for feeling and thinking the way I was during that time. This book helped me understand the gravity of what I was trying to deal with and helped me to understand that it wasn't my fault and helped me to reach out to my family and friends to ask for the help I needed. It's been ten years since I read it and it still sticks with me. It was beautifully written and touching. A lifesaver when I was lost at sea. I would recommend this book to anyone who is expecting, or has recently given birth and may be experiencing depression when they feel like they should be filled with joy.

this is a very informative book… My daughter had a baby a few months ago and was suffering from postpartum anxiety… We bought this book and passed it around between her eye and her other grandma… It gave a lot of help and insight…

When going through postpartum depression it's the most hard and difficult thing to go through because not only do you yourself not understand it but the people around you don't either. To be able to read this book and feel normal even with all the insane hormones running through your body is a great feeling! I would even read this book over if I have a second child just because of how helpful it was to have someone to really relate to!! I never really wanted to thank any author after reading their book but after this book I feel so close to Brooke who I don't even know but wish I could just say thank you for the help.

I'm so glad Brooke had the courage to share her story. There are so many things I identified with in this book...very similar to my own struggle with PPD. It is great to hear that you are not alone...the more people talk about it the less women will have to struggle with this horrible illness.

brooke shields has done an excellent job painting a picture of one of the negative possibilities of the postpartum experience. though it took her a while to get pregnant, her pregnancy was wonderful; so it can be very surprising to read how difficult her experience was after the birth of her daughter rowan.this is an important work in many ways. first, we know that postpartum depression occurs in 10 to 20% of new moms. this makes depression the number one complication in childbirth! also, the baby blues occur in 75 to 80% of new moms. there are several other postpartum psychological disorders to be aware of as well. for instance, postpartum psychosis occurs in 1 to 2 moms per 1,000 births. though rare, this disorder can have tragic consequences (reference andrea yates).in working with patients, I recommend this and other books by celebrity figures specifically because it's amazing how healing it can be for new moms to see that women they think of as having perfect lives can still have problems after having a child. shields has done an excellent job here and writes in a very honest and descriptive fashion. she also includes resources for more information.

What a great, honest and heartfelt book. I bought this when I was about a month postpartum. I was feeling very alone and was afraid to talk about how I felt. Brooke really opens the door for discussion and bares her soul in this book. I recommend this book to all new mothers who may be feeling overwhelmed or depressed.

This book was a very quick and easy read. I myself had been wondering if the feelings I had postpartum were lingering baby blues or postpartum depression. I identified with many of the feelings/thoughts that Brooke describes in this book. I realized it is more common than I thought. Reading about another person going through this and deciding to get help, gave me the courage to seek help and talk to a doctor. I only wish I had read it sooner! I would recommend this to everyone to read! New moms, expecting moms, spouses/partners, close friends and family. Excellent!

This is a really cool book because it talks about postpartum depression. It is a difficult thing to talk about. It's wonderful that Brooke wrote it though because it shows that it happens to people from many different walks of life. I gave it to my sister to read after I finished it and it helped her recognize what and why she felt the way she did after giving birth to her third and fourth children.

Almost exactly four years ago today, I wrote the following about the predecessor to this text: "Truly, the content that Maister, Green, and Galford provide in 'The Trusted Advisor' is absolutely brilliant. The only other consulting text that comes to mind which meets the quality of this work is 'The Secrets of Consulting', by Weinberg (see my review). And while 'Secrets' is an incredibly informative and entertaining masterpiece, the three authors who collaborated for this piece have provided a great service to anyone involved with advising other individuals, regardless of profession." What Green and Howe offer with this recent effort follows well in these earlier footsteps. In the words of the authors, this is "a more detailed how-to guide for people in any professional role", and I could not agree more. This book is not a replacement, but a compliment, providing a hands-on approach to developing and maintaining trust-based relationships that will certainly cause me to recommend it to colleagues.The material that the authors present is broken down into five parts: Part 1 ("A Trust Primer"), Part 2 ("Developing Your Trust Skill Set"), Part 3 ("Developing Business with Trust"), Part 4 ("Managing Relationships with Trust"), and Part 5 ("Building and Running a Trustworthy Organization"). These parts are broken down into 31 chapters, each typically containing just a few pages, which greatly helped my digestion of the content as well as my focus on specific areas of trust. And one of the specific aspects about this book that I appreciated, as with "The Trusted Advisor", is all the lists throughout the book (164 in total, more than a 5-fold increase from the earlier effort!) that are also contained in a comprehensive appendix.As a consultant, chapter personal favorites include Chapter 1 ("Fundamental Truths"), Chapter 3 ("The Dynamics of Influence"), Chapter 4 ("Three Trust Models"), Chapter 6 ("Listen"), Chapter 7 ("Partner"), Chapter 8 ("Improvise"), Chapter 9 ("Risk"), Chapter 15 ("Talking Price"), Chapter 21 ("Accelerating Trust"), Chapter 23 ("Shifting from Tactics to Strategy"), Chapter 24 ("My Client is a Jerk: Transforming Relationships Gone Bad"), and Chapter 25 ("Dealing with Untrustworthy People"). Based on my experience, all professionals will find valuable what the authors present within the chapters of Part 2. While many other texts address the fact that self-knowledge is essential, if any potential readers of this book do not have time to read everything that the authors have to share, the other chapters within this portion of the book (on listening, partnering, improvising, and risk-taking) should be considered required reading for everyone who works with clients to any degree.The "Trust Equation", Trust = (Credibility + Reliability + Intimacy) / Self-Orientation, or T = (C + R + I) / S, is revisited and expanded upon by the authors alongside two other trust models in Chapter 4, resulting in one of the best discussions in the text. "Self-orientation, which we like to call your 'S', rears its ugly head most often when you feel some sort of fear: fear of looking bad, fear of rejection, fear of loss. All of these fears are perfectly normal. And they are what makes your S look big. What makes a difference is having the ego strength to see the fear, acknowledge it, 'get off your S', and move on. After all, obsessing about Big S mistakes is just more Big S." Following this discussion, "The Trust Creation Process", a five-step model (engage, listen, frame, envision, and commit) in which the authors stress order, is presented, followed by "The Trust Principles" that include a focus on the other, a collaborative approach, a medium-to-long-term perspective, and a habit of being transparent.As the authors explain, "being or becoming trustworthy cannot be reduced to pure behaviors. Your actions are driven by your beliefs, and your beliefs are driven by your values or principles. Trustworthy behavior is far too complex to fake without beliefs and values behind it. If your values don't drive you to behave in a trustworthy manner all the time, you will be found out quickly. Hence, the trust equation and the way you use the trust creation process are really just outcomes of the principles you hold, the trust principles. The way to become trusted is to act consistently from those principles." And later, the authors introduce a refrain that is common throughout the rest of the text, especially echoing throughout part 3, which personally brought to mind the negative repurcussions an ABC (always be closing) mindset made famous by Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross is likely to bring: "Focusing on relationships nurtures transactions, whereas focusing on transactions chokes off relationships."

I bought this book for a webinar I delivered on reputation. I am glad I did! The book is a very easy read, the language is not too hard to access and it is not boring. I am especially liked the chapters around listening and influence - they have proven useful frameworks for my coaching sessions. I also like the fact that at the end of every chapter, there are worksheets for you to take action on what you've just read.

I really enjoyed the first few chapters of this book, but as it went on I felt that it became more general fluff.

I have a 2001 Cabrio. I wanted to find 2 things when I ordered this book: How to replace the fuel door lock actuator, and a picture of where to find the fuses. The fuses do not exist where the book says they are. The one reference to the fuel door lock actuator says "See chapter xyz." I read every word in the referenced chapter... not one mention of the fuel door lock actuator.Very disappointing.

This is a Chilton's manual for the 1999-2002 Jetta. The manual is a must for any one who can turn his own wrench to save +$70 per hour for minor repairs. The pictures are in black and white, and the book itself could have slightly more detail and cover more topics. This book is a worthwhile investment however if you're able to use a wrench or socket set. It'll pay for itself and then some after one repair or preventative maintenance.This book contains engine overhaul procedures, and a wiring diagram. Why don't you own one for all of your vehicles?

I have both this book and volkswagen's service manual. If you do regular, simple maintance only, this book will suffice. If you change timing belts, serpentine/accessory belts, or more advanced work ... it will not be enough. You should buy the service manual as well. However, notice that I said "as well". It is far easier to find information quickly with the Chilton book than the service manual. But, if you need detailed drawings and explanations on how to do something, you will need the service manual. So, I use both in my garage.

Well, Chilton manuals are never something to write home about. The instructions are mostly detailed, occasionally frustratingly vague, the photos can be down right wrong on occasion, but if your willing to figure it out, at less then half the cost of the Bentley manual, its really not to bad.

This is a very handy book if youre looking for wiring, body or other diagrams. The 2.0 and 1.8 motors are even included and it's all very straight forward. I was dissapointed to find out that the VR6 motor is not covered in this book, however I shouldve read the cover before buying

Mom really enjoyed this book. She has never read any of Ruth Hogan books but this will not be the last. I usually get her books that are more romance novels than friendship novels. However she enjoyed this book. She like the writing style and the way the book flowed. I know when she enjoys a book because she will read it in a day or two. This book was read in a day. In addition, I am on the hunt for more Ruth Hogan novels.I never tell about the book itself as I DO NOT want to spoil anything for another reader. Mom may give me a synopsis about the book but I never talk about the story line. Hate it when someone tells me something about the story that occurs 3/4 the way thru a book or a reviewer tells me they do finally get married. I don’t want you spoiling my reading and I do not want to spoil your reading when it comes to a good book. I figure it you are wanting to know a little about the story, you can read the synopsis that Amazon and the author gives you. However I will tell you that this enjoyable read was about finding friendship in an usual place.There is a group a ladies from the beauty shop that mom goes to that get together to read and discuss their books.This is definitely be a recommend to Mom’s Beauty Shop Book Group. Instead, it starts when the strip abruptly got really interesting, a few years later. King's protagonist Walt is a good-natured, roly-poly bachelor with a fondness for cars; as this book begins, he acquires a "stepchild"—an infant abandoned on his doorstep named Skeezix. The great innovation of this strip was that all of its characters aged and grew in real time. A lot of the early jokes about Skeezix have to do with Walt trying to keep the baby happy the same way he keeps cars running smoothly, and the strip's main tone is calm amusement about parenthood's lighter side. But there's a melancholy undercurrent: who will become a mother figure to Skeezix, and what will that mean for Walt's independence and relationships with his car-enthusiast friends. The daily strips reprinted here don't have the glorious visual inventiveness of King's Sunday pages (which will appear as separate volumes), but they're still lovely. I had never really understood the appeal of Gasoline Alley. I sensed that it was a pleasant enough "slice of life" comic strip, well drawn and harmless. I had given it a glance now and then over the years, not even beginning to sense the iceberg that was always there, just beneath the 3 or 4 daily comic panels. This was all before I was exposed to the collected early stuff and the absolute genius of creator Frank King. Now, after having just finished the first volume of "Walt and Skeezix" which covers years 1921 and 1922 of this wonderful strip, I am simply very grateful to the Montreal publishing house, Drawn and Quarterly, for undertaking the multi-year project of collecting all the dailies from the King years.The effect of this strip is somewhat cumulative, and Jeet Heer puts it best in his introduction when he writes "Gasoline Alley needs to be read in bulk to be appreciated." As I read along, it became increasingly clear to me what an astonishingly bright gem I was looking at. After I had read about six months into the dailies from 1921, I knew I was onto something very, very unique. The story of Walt and Skeezix unfolded exactly at the pace of real life, with all the well drawn characters growing older in real time. This infuses the strip with an immediately gripping "realism" that in turn makes the reader identify in a powerful way with the characters. The moments of subtle insight into human nature are many and so brilliantly done I found myself re-reading a single daily strip two or three times to truly savor it, finding ever-deepening levels to appreciate (if this sounds like hyperbole for a review of a comic strip, all I can say is buy this volume and I bet you will agree).I don't want to gush and ruin your enjoyment of this work. You should come to it yourself, on your own terms. I will just say that you can truly sense the earth turning as you read these pages, and that this strip contains some of the truest, purest moments of understanding that I have experienced in any book.One can look at this collected work as an incredible record of American life, or simply appreciate Frank King's wonderful art, and be well rewarded for all effort. Just beneath the surface, though, lies a much larger and impressive piece of art. Chris Ware, editor of the series, writes in his preface "I am convinced that after all these books are published, Gasoline Alley will stand as one of the most individual, human, and genuinely great works in the history of comics." Amen to that, brother. I will go further even than Mr. Ware: I believe that Frank King's Gasoline Alley, taken as a whole, is one of the greatest works of literature by an American.Drawn and Quarterly Books deserves a medal of recognition for this multi-volume publishing project, and I personally regret every mean thought I have ever had about our neighbors to the north.This work is highly recommended. -Mykal Banta

My only previous experience with Gasoline Alley was a Mad Magazine parody called Gasoline Valley that focused on the interesting fact that the characters actually grew older as the series progressed. The Mad Magazine parody showed Skeezix aging from a baby into an old man just as the comic does however this volume features only a couple of years so at the end Skeezix is just a toddler. Gasoline Alley isn't a hilarious comic; instead it's a sweet, light hearted view of small town life in the early 1920's. The comic revolves around Walt, a big hearted confirmed bachelor who finds a baby deposited on his doorstep. This being the "good ol' days" Walt just keeps the baby becoming Uncle Walt (later in the book he does actually go to the effort to make it a legal adoption).A lot of the jokes are repeated, for instance Walt, the only bachelor among his circle of friends, constantly uses the line `I know when I have it good' after seeing his hen pecked buddies. We also get to experience Walt's continual struggle with his weight. There are a few extended storylines including a shady land developer who takes the Gasoline Alley gang for a bit of money. The longest story is about the arrival of an attractive young lady named Blossom and her developing relationship with Walt.Three things stood out for me in this collection. First was the always meticulous job done by editor Chris Ware who goes above and beyond the call of duty. There is a ton of fascinating background information on cartoonist Frank King. My tip is that any publisher who wants to release a comic collection like this one should call on Chris Ware. He is a man with serious passion for comics. The second thing that caught my attention is how clean and pleasant Frank King's drawings are. But what I enjoyed most about Walt and Skeezik's was the glimpse at life in the United States prior to the Great Depression.What you need to do when reading through these comic strips is to try and put yourself into the era. These comics were created over 85 years ago and it's like peering into a time capsule. There is not a single mention of television or pop culture. Most of the residents of Gasoline Alley are chiefly concerned with the mileage they get on their tires or the cost of a new hat. Volume one pretty much satisfied my curiosity and I probably won't buy further volumes but that takes nothing away from this excellent collection. You definitely get your money's worth and it literally took me months to get through the entire book.

I have been a fan of the comic strip, Gasoline Alley for my entire life. This collection of daily strips from the years 1921 and 1922, tell the story of Walt, a bachelor and car fanatic, who awakes one morning to find a foundling on his door step. He decides to raise the boy and names him Skeezix.When he isn't taking care of Skeezix, Walt and his friends are usually out in the alley, working on their cars. Back when these strips were created, the automobile was new invention that everyone was excited about and eager to experience. Cars back then, like with most new technology, had many problems and their owners needed to keep fiddling with then in order for them to work properly. The strip follows the daily lives of, Walt and his friends from the alley. The pace of the story seems slower than comic strips you find in today's newspapers. This helps you get to know the characters and I feel is reflective of what life was probably like 85 years ago.This is a wonderful collection and includes biographical information and many photos of the cartoonist, Frank King and his family, taken from around the time these strips were drawn. This book is a treasure, buy it!

About the Author

Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He holds degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Ohio State University, having earned both a master’s (1970) and a doctorate in sociology (1974) from Ohio State University with a special emphasis in criminology. From 1976 to 1994, he taught criminology and criminal justice courses at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. For the last 16 of those years, he chaired the university’s Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice. The university named him Distinguished Professor in 1991.   Schmalleger is also the Director of the Justice Research Association, a private consulting firm and think tank focusing on issues of crime and justice. The Justice Research Association (JRA) serves the needs of the nation’s civil and criminal justice planners and administrators through workshops, conferences, and grant-writing and program-evaluation support. JRA also sponsors the Criminal Justice Distance Learning Consortium, which resides on the Web at http://www.cjdlc.org.   Schmalleger has taught in the online graduate program of the New School for Social Research, helping to build the world’s first electronic classrooms in support of distance learning through computer telecommunications. As an adjunct professor with Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, Schmalleger helped develop the university’s graduate program in security administration and loss prevention. I purchased this text for consideration in one of my intro to criminal justice classes. If you are looking for the basics and the same old same old in a CJ text, you won't be disappointed. For years criminal justice education has been changing and unfortunately this author and others like him are resistant to that change. There needs to be a more creative way to teach criminal just at the intro level than by pumping students full of facts when they cannot think for themselves. Many of us are looking for something that will enhance problem solving and original thinking. This old method of "I tell you, now tell me back" is not education. There needs to be something better than this!

This book was being used as a back up for college class to be able to mark up. We weren't sure if it was the same exact book even though the ISBN was the same as college book store because the cover picture was different. Turns out that we are renting the same textbook from school for over $80 and bought this for $12 - in GREAT condition! Totally ripped off at school. This was great purchase.

Although it is a textbook and I had to study the material... it is extremely informative and up to date highly recommended it if you want to get an A in your Criminology course.

Book was in excellent condition however i had to return it. It say "new" but it DO NOT contain access codes for Pearson Labs. if you need a text w/ access codes dont buy it unless you want to buy the access separately on top of it. If you dont need the Pearson codes it was perfect.

Great book. Has lots of examples and very illustrated and easy to read. Good for college classes.

Thinnest paper EVER. I didn't know it was possible to make sure fragile, thin paper aside from tissue paper. It's not much thicker than that. The loose leaf style is a major issue (especially given the thin paper it's printed on.) The indexes are useful to find information you're looking for.

As far as textbooks go, this one is odd. It's formatted in such a way that the pictures almost take precedent over the text. Don't get me wrong, some of the info graphics in this book are awesome, but what the crap is this one column that's about three words wide doing in a text book? Also, "Good" quality apparently means "Not completely written in and not ALL of the pages are noticeably warped"
