Review

Praise for Joel Kotkin’s The Human City: Urbanism for the Rest of Us“[Kotkin] weaves an impressive array of original observations about cities into his arguments, enriching our understanding of what cities are about and what they can and must become.” —Shlomo Angel, Wall Street Journal“Kotkin argues that suburbs are where middle-class families want to live. . . . A city hostile to the middle class is, in Kotkin’s view, a sea hostile to fish.” —Alexander Nazaryan, Newsweek“[The] kinds of places that are getting it right . . . we might call Joel Kotkin cities, after the writer who champions them. These are opportunity cities . . . [that] are less regulated, so it’s easier to start a business. They are sprawling with easy, hodgepodge housing construction, so the cost of living is low. . . . We should be having a debate between the Kotkin model and the [Richard] Florida model, between two successful ways to create posterity.” —David Brooks, New York Times“Kotkin’s premise focus[es] on the predictions made by some economists who believe suburbs are going to wither as more Americans return to the cities. He [says] those have been hasty reactions to the 2008 economic recession, and that humans’ desire for spacious living remains strong. ” —Ronnie Wachter, Chicago Tribune“The Human City . . . takes a wider and longer view. Kotkin shows how cities developed as religious, imperial, commercial, and industrial centers. . . . To his subject Kotkin brings a useful worldwide perspective.” —Michael Barone, Washington Examiner“[Kotkin] believes it’s time to start rethinking what suburbia can be and to become more strategic about how it evolves.” —Randy Rieland, Smithsonian.com“Kotkin recommends that we embrace a kind of ‘urban pluralism’. . . . That means a sustained effort to make the city livable, yes, but it also entails acceptance of the suburbs. . . . The reality of suburban life isn’t as grim as the naysayers suggest, and Kotkin rattles off a long list of statistics to prove it.” —Blake Seitz, Washington Free Beacon“[Kotkin] writes that the suburbs are alive and well—and are positioned for strong opportunity.” —Michael Stevens, Crain’s Chicago Business“Whether you’re a downtown dweller or suburbanite, renter or owner, there is plenty of urban food for thought in The Human City.” —Deborah Bowers, Winnipeg Free Press“A long and lucid argument against . . . the current orthodoxy—that high-density living in the core, rather than suburban sprawl, is the optimal design for the modern urbanopolis.” —Pat Kane, New Scientist“[The Human City] is a prolonged argument for development that responds to what people want and need during the course of their lives . . . . [It] is not meant as an anti-urbanist tract, but rather as a redefinition of urbanism to fit modern realities and the needs of families. . . . It’s hard to argue with that point.” —David R. Godschalk, Urban Land Magazine“The notion that people are dying to leave the suburbs is just not true. . . . Kotkin [says] most of the job growth and affordable housing are in the suburbs.” —Kim Mikus, Daily HeraldAdvance praise for Joel Kotkin’s The Human City: Urbanism for the Rest of Us“The most eloquent expression of urbanism since Jane Jacobs’s The Death and Life of Great American Cities. Kotkin writes with a strong sense of place; he recognizes that the geography and traditions of a city create the contours of its urbanity.” —Fred Siegel, scholar in residence at St. Francis College, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research“Kotkin is a refreshingly poetic and compelling writer on policy; he weaves data, history, theory, and his own probing analysis into a clear and soulful treatise on the way we ought to live now.” —Ted C. Fishman, author of China, Inc. and Shock of Gray“Kotkin is one of the clearest urban writers and thinkers of our time. His first-hand experiences and insights on a broad array of issues such as inequity, infertility, lifestyle, and urban design shake the reader like a jolt of urban caffeine.” —Alan M. Berger, codirector of the Center for Advanced Urbanism at MIT, founding director of P-REX Lab“While advocates trumpet megacities and global urbanization, Joel Kotkin makes an informed case for urban dispersal and argues that bigger and denser are not necessarily better.” —Witold Rybczynski, author of Mysteries of the Mall“This book asks the crucially important question, ‘What is a city for?’ It should be read by all urban planners and included on the reading list for any urban planning course in a university.” —Chan Heng Chee, chairman, Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities, Singapore University of Technology and DesignPraise for Joel Kotkin’s The Next Hundred Million: America in 2050:"Given the viral finger-pointing and hand-wringing over what's seen as America's decline these days, Mr. Kotkin's book provides a timely and welcome. . . antidote." —Sam Roberts, New York Times"Kotkin. . . offers a well-researched—and very sunny—forecast for the American economy. . . . His confidence is well-supported and is a reassuring balm amid the political and economic turmoil of the moment." —Publishers Weekly"A fascinating glimpse into a crystal ball, rich in implications that are alternately disturbing and exhilarating." —Kirkus Reviews"Kotkin provides a well-argued, well-researched and refreshingly calm perspective." — Joe Friesen, The Globe and Mail"Lamenting its own decline has long been an American weakness. . . . Those given to such declinism may derive a little comfort from Joel Kotkin’s latest book." —The Economist"Kotkin has a striking ability to envision how global forces will shape daily family life, and his conclusions can be thought-provoking as well as counterintuitive." —WBUR-FM, Boston's NPR News StationPraise for Joel Kotkin’s The New Class Conflict:"Kotkin is to be commended for seeing past the daily bric-à-brac of American politics to perceive the newly emerging class divisions." — Jay Cost, The Washington Free Beacon". . . Paints a dire picture of the undeclared war on the middle class." — Kyle Smith, New York Post". . . In having the courage to junk the old nostrums, [Kotkin] has taken an important step forward." —Financial Times"This original and provocative book should stimulate fresh thinking—and produce vigorous dissent." —Foreign AffairsPraise for Joel Kotkin’s The City: A Global History:". . . This fast read succeeds most with Kotkin as storyteller, flying through time and around the world to weave so many disparate histories into one urban tapestry." —The Fifth Annual Planetizen Top 10 Books List, 2006 Edition". . . Offers fascinating insight into the ideologies that have created different city designs, and into the natural human desire to gather together to live and for commerce." —Steve Greenhut,The Orange County Register"The book is taut, elegant, informative and lots of fun to read. When I got to the end, I wished it had been longer." —Alan Ehrenhalt,Governing Magazine

I greatly appreciate Joel Kotkin book. I am citizen who volunteers to serve on the El Paso County Planning Commission. The City of Colorado Springs constitutes some 70% of the urbanized population in the County. I have been intuitively ambivalent about efforts to increase urban population densities. Many professional planners treat increased urban density as if it is a modern "Holy Grail". My wife and I live in a suburban setting, in one of 126 detached townhomes inside a gated community. I prefer not to maintain a yard and we enjoy the freedom to travel. Transportation is good and.I can travel to the City's relatively small core in 15 to 20 minutes. All 4 of our adult children all live in a suburban setting with good sized yards and 2-car garages. It is a great place to raise children. Some people want to live in a higher density apartment or townhome. They like this life style. Joel used a heavily data-driven narrative to both validate my residential living choice and to help me to understand why others will choose something different. Joel insists that housing must work for the resident, not some planner or governmental official. Joel also exposes much commonly accepted thinking as being unsupported by the data. This a good read for anyone interested in understanding the urban, suburban, and exurban dynamics. I recommend it very highly!

I live in a small city in the Northern Rockies. Anti-family/ anti-single-family-homes/ anti-middle class/ cars-are-evil urban planners are currently in control. This book is a welcome counter-argument. Joel Kotkin cogently reaffirms the obvious: the purpose of a city (and, I would argue, of a whole society) is to preserve natural resources while constructing a human-built environment that enables individuals to live flourishing lives and promotes healthy family life. Like our generous Founders, we should show intentional concern for "our posterity."He points out that, through a lifetime, each individual and family passes through life stages. As we change, the places we call "home" are likely to change as well....from parental home, to college dorm, to shared apartment, to childless couple condo, to a detached house with a yard, to an empty nest, to an assisted living facility. Truly inclusive city planning needs to be open to all sorts of residential preferences if people are to live and flourish in urban environments. I'm very grateful to Joel Kotkin for writing this book.

A bit long and dry in presentation and long read. However, the discussion / review on the apparent impact cities have on people was interesting as was the identification that trendy city planning is not delivering what people really want in housing. The world wide same trends and same problems highlights the experts are floundering around without acceptable solutions. A good contribution to the cities for families or humans discussion. Thank you.

If you have an interest in how we should manage our growth and development then you should read this book. There are great insights on what makes a city livable for people of all income levels. I have friends and family who are not interested in the detail and I ask them to read the final chapter.

A must-read to understand cities in America.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book for the author's light touch writing about a lot of statistics. While I was certain that cities were becoming increasingly awful places, not the utopias central planners tell us they are, I didn't know that most people agree with me and are voting with their feet by moving to the suburbs. This book very much put what I have learned and have been confused by from New Urbanism in to perspective.

The general point of this book seems to be that cities are bad and suburbs are good. Kotkin's most widely publicized argument is that suburbia will protect us from plunging birthrates. However, Kotkin writes that (a) affluent nations are suburbanizing and (b) birthrates throughout the world (not just in affluent nations but even in not-so-affluent places like Iran and Morocco) have been plunging. If both (a) and (b) are true, obviously suburbanization has not prevented declining birthrates.Kotkin is right about one thing: families are being priced out of our most affluent cities. He therefore argues that children simply don't belong in cities. But it seems to me that one could just as easily argue that we should allow more urban housing to reduce housing costs, and thus make city living more affordable for those who want it.

Joe fails to understand history and mistakes ant-union, trickle down for trickle on.

The overall content is excellent so far; I feel like I'm learning so much, understanding the material, and retaining it well. The summaries and exercises at the end of the chapters are great. There are a couple things about the book that drive me crazy though, and the book loses one start for each.1) The book is printed in black-and-white. It's not a big deal in some contexts, but here we're talking about subject that's all about drawing COLOR on a computer screen, and there's no COLOR in the book. It's especially ridiculous to find a diagram showing mixtures of primary colors, and it's printed in black-and-white. Seriously?2) Typos. Lots of typos. Every chapter so far has several. Some of them in formulas and code samples. And what I'm worried about is how many typos are there in formulas and code that I'm NOT recognizing and end up misunderstanding a concept.

This is a great book. The reason i'm giving it one star is because after Frank Luna released this book, Microsoft released the win 8 sdk which deprecated a lot of what this book does. It takes a lot of work to port Frank Luna's code to something workable that is not deprecated. Just trying to warn people before they buy this in case they are brand new to DX11 and expecting something up to date.Edited to Add: This is the best book i've found for DirectX 11 out there. Just be warned that it will take a lot of work to get the code samples to compile if you want it to be code that isn't deprecated and to move away from the effects library.

I already had a couple of 3D game programming books but I had to get this one for a 3D programming class.Mr Luna covers the basics fairly well. His illustrations are quite good. I believe he goes into too much detail at times losing the reader in the forest for all the trees. His explanation of the pipeline leaves the reader a little lost. Maybe a little history lesson would help. For example, what's with all the shader stages? One thing I find PARTICULAR annoying is the way Mr Luna mixes in code with giant fonts with the rest of the text. Because he uses a large bold Roman font, it takes up a lot of space and is totally distracting. It ends with with the reader thinking the code is more important or is the highlight of the book. The text is! I read a book to get the idea of how things work, then I'll try the sample code to see if I can make it go. Mr Luna should take a lesson from Dietel's books. They have the art of mixing text and code down pat.The code samples from his web site work. Some libraries had to be rebuilt for Directx11. I wish he had more comments in his code. Also, some chapters do not mesh well with his code samples. For example, his intro on graphic primitives could have used some sample code to demonstrate some of the principles. Instead, the reader is left to either upgrade Directx11 initialization code or downgrade some of the drawing code from Chapter 6.

I heard people recommend "Practical Rendering and Computation with Direct3D11" over this book. Those people are wrong. That book is highly simplified and uses simpler and/or deprecated methods that don't really teach you how to use D3D11 well (e.g. showing you how to set one specific MSAA mode, but not how to query for all supported modes and allow end users to choose from them). This book is much better and more detailed. I haven't come across a better one for D3D11.

Frank Luna's book is great. It's stated goal is to make you comfortable enough that you can use Microsoft's MSDN documentation and understand everything they're talking about, which is a very useful goal. There's no way you're going to memorize API calls, and yet MSDN assumes you have quite a bit of understanding about the rendering pipeline and the structures that DirectX uses.I find this book to share an interesting dichotomy with the OpenGL Superbible's 5th edition, the one that teaches version 3.3 and completely eschews the fixed pipeline of earlier OpenGL versions. Let me compare the two books, not to compare DirectX and OpenGL, but to compare the way each book teaches its topic.Mr. Luna's strategy is to give you a lot of information up front. Chapter 4 discusses DirectX initialization, and it is full of the structures and API calls you need to actually get something on the screen. As a result, you actually end up going through a couple chapters before you draw the typical 'Hello World' application of 3D graphics - putting a single triangle on the screen. Before you get there, you have about 60 pages of theory and function calls to work through, which for some people can seem quite intimidating. The OpenGL Superbible takes a different alternative. Instead of giving you the API data right up front, the author has written a series of wrapper classes that allow the user to do the drawing before understanding the API. Once you get some graphics on the screen, the book will begin to look into the wrapper classes, and teach you the API by showing you what each class actually does. By the end of the book, you will understand exactly what OpenGL is doing.Personally, I like the method of teaching that Mr. Luna's DirectX book takes better. If you are the kind of person that finds this unloading of information up front daunting, perhaps you should get the OpenGL Superbible instead, which takes a different teaching method. Learning the 3D rendering pipeline is a different process than learning DirectX or OpenGL, so once you learn that pipeline through one API, you shouldn't have too much trouble with the other. For me, however, this book is the better way to learn, and if you are okay with digging in deep before actually drawing anything on screen, you will like this book too.

I've been writing software for a living for 20 years, and I've been doing it for fun for even longer, so I've learned a lot of languages over the years. I usually skim a book and then jump into a project, just using the book as a reference when I get stuck. This is the first time I've really felt it was worthwhile to READ the book up front.Of course I won't REALLY know F# until I've done a project or three with it, and I'm sure I'll be using this as a reference for quite a while.

This is the first book on F# that I'm reading. You don't really need a background in functional programming to get the most out of this book. but do understand that it doesn't delve into the theory of functional programming, but that's just fine because you get to see the beauty of its application in the first few chapters. However, once you're through with the introductory chapters, you get to some in-depth and meaty parts. Honestly, for me the chapter on symbolic programming was worth the price of the book. Buy this book if you're doing functional programming in .Net. In fact, buy it even if you're not doing FP in .Net because it will make your C# code orders of magnitude cleaner because you'll be using lambda expressions and LINQ like a pro after this.

You won't have a great experience learning F# if this is your first book on F#. I've been a C# coder for close to 8 years and I found it frustrating trying to follow along. You read, try some examples, read again and continue this process until you realise how long the book is and then realise that it might be months before you get around to finishing it.This is the type of book I'll be reading once I'm familiar with F# and I can just read it from start to finish and pickup stuff along the way.If you want to learn F#, read lots of tutorials online, write a few small apps and make sure you're comfortable with functional programming.I'm giving it a 3 stars not because of the content, but because I'm disappointed that the "Who this book is for" was misleading and I feel like I purchased the book for nothing.

I have been using imperative languages for ages lately my use of C# have turned more functional. So one reason for me to learn F# is to get an understanding of a proper functional language and to get into the functional way of thinking and potentially be able to use that knowledge in C# or other imperative languages that start to Incorporate functional aspects.I Believe this book deliver both a good introduction to F# but also the functional way of thinking in general.

Goes over stuff that's hard/impossible to find online. Book's surprisingly readable and has lots of examples that are applicable to the real world.

This is an interim review and I expect to upgrade the rating later on, when I have read further - which I will certainly be doing as the overall approach and style are greatly to my liking and this promises to prove at least among the best offerings available. However, I want to flag a potentially crucial difficulty: Chapter 2 presents a "first" program which is refreshingly more demanding than the traditional 'Hello World (!)' offering ... that program, unfortunately, does not run as presented (at least not on my primary system). I tried two approaches to putting things right, neither of which has borne fruit, before deciding to move on. The difficulty apparently has something to do with how (or how verbosely) a function that is part of the String library needs to be specified. Now, actually, the description of the program and its working are sufficiently clear that seeing it all happen on screen before me is, arguably, not crucial. And, eventually, I expect to come to understand how to put things right (I am mainly a Mac user and not well up in Visual Studio, nor do I need to be in order to use F#).So my gripe is this. Any language like F# can be expected to evolve (indeed, my FSI reports version 3.1, which is conceivably part of the reason) but this book is in its third iteration and should take care to keep up, especially with the psychologically critical first program. I look forward to being able to read the appropriate erratum/update on the book's APress website.

This is another great book bought a pair of year ago and never reviewed. For me was an invaluable resource for deepening F# knowledge. If this book lacks a defect this is clarity. The author is so clear I think that also child could learn the language (if you allow me this hyperbole!).It covers a very large amount of arguments.I suggest you to own a copy.

The third edition of this well-regarded book brings it up to date for the third major release of the F# language, which is not only the first class functional .NET programming language, but also a functional language available on non-Microsoft operating systems. The authors are well-known as researchers and developers of the F# language and functional language education, and also for developing commercial systems with functional languages. This background shows in the organization and no-nonsense approach throughout the book. This is a dense read. It provides in-depth illustration of every major topic in the language with code examples, often including alternate approaches with analysis of pros and cons. The authors strike a good balance between guiding newcomers to functional languages and serious dissertation aimed at more advanced readers. Its organization allows approaching topics as tutorials or skimming topics and also functions very well for reference. It is superbly edited with almost no typos. Every student of F# should have this in their library. As a new edition it is well worth checking out the reviews of the prior two.

Frank Lambert's "The Barbary Wars: American Independence in the Atlantic World" is one of the better books about the Barbary Wars. It does a good job at covering the political and religious views of those living in the United States and the various Barbary Nations. It also touches on these same views of those living in Europe. "The Barbary Wars" is far superior in these areas than either "Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates" or "The Crescent Obscured." The book does not cover military activities and actions in great detail, which actually allows the reader to better follow the political and religious dialogue better. For the best book on the military military activities and actions during the Barbary Wars I recommend "Dawn Like Thunder" by Glenn Tucker.Minor complaints are that the photos and illustrations are not in chronological order and the author occasionally gets descriptions of naval ships confused, e.g., the USS Guerriere was a 44-gun frigate (not a 74-gun ship-of-the-line as the author states) and USS Ontario was a 20-gun sloop-of-war built at Baltimore in 1813 (not a British sloop captured by Decator as the author states). USS Epervier, which was a captured British 18-gun brig-sloop (but not captured by Decator) also accompanied the Guerriere and Ontario to the Mediterranean in 1815. Also, USS Independence, which was a new 74-gun ship-of-the-line, did show up in the Mediterranean after Decatur had obtained peace with Algiers in 1815.

The setting of this book is the United States of America has recently become a sovereign nation. However, unlike the major colonialist powers of Europe (e.g., Britain, France, Spain, etc.), the U.S. lacks a formidable navy and a respected presence in the high seas. At this time, the Mediterranean sea is overrun by ruthless pirates whose activities are endorsed, if not outright ordered by the quasi-independent ruling heads of Morocco, Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli, which are collectively known as the Barbary states. As a result, U.S. merchant ships are plundered, U.S. gun ships are commandeered, the U.S. itself is extorted to paying an annual tribute and U.S. citizens are routinely either held for ransom or sold into slavery. If you want an informative, engaging and concise book on the U.S.' wars with the Barbary pirates, look no further than this. In this book, you will learn about:* All of the major tariff laws which led up to the Declaration of Independence (i.e., Navigation Acts, Revenue (Sugar) Act, Stamp Act, Townshed Duties and the Tea Act).* The two major wars with the Barbary states. The first, which is known as the Tripolitian War (1801-1805) and the second, which is known as the Algerine War (1815).* The Tripolitan capture of the U.S. 36 gun frigate, a top-of-the-line gunship that would have been devastating under pirate control. To counter this deadly advantage, Lieutenant Stephen Decatur lead a daring and successful incursion into the Tripolitan harbor to burn the the USS Philadelphia, so that it can never be used by the pirates against the U.S. In particularly, you will learn about how Decatur surreptitiously disguised his vessel as a distressed, anchorless merchant ship that needs to be docked on shore.* William Eaton's courageous 500-mile march through Libyan desert to launch a surprise attack on Derne, a coastal fortress which was not prepared for a land attack. This was the decisive victory in the Tripolitan War.* The overt contrast between the treaty of the Tripolitan war and the Algerine War. The first treaty was the result of negotiation (with the soon-to-be-infamous Tobias Lear representing the U.S.). For example, it declared that the Tripolitans reduce the amount of the tribute that they demanded by 90% (Thus, conceding that forcing the U.S. to pay tribute, in principle, was still acceptable.) Even though Jefferson evidently approved of such limited terms, this was an outrage to the U.S. domestically as well as to the war heroes such as Eaton and Decatur. In contrast, the terms of second treaty were dictated by the U.S. In particular, Decatur demanded that the pirates:- disavow all demands of tribute and ransom.- return all American prisoners and property captured through piracy.- allow all ships with a U.S. flag pass unmolested in the Mediterranean.Interestingly enough, the Dey of Algiers wanted to deliberate on the treaty overnight. Decatur famously replied that he would allow "not a minute; if your squadron appears in sight before the treaty is actually signed [...] ours will capture them." The terms that Decatur obtained in the treaties were unimaginable before the war, considering the decades of harassment that the U.S. faced at the hand of the Barbary pirates. This is an amazing book.

Good basic history about a relatively forgotten time

Lambert's book provides just enough detail to understand the historical context and understand the motivation of the pirate communities of North Africa at that time. One can see from this aspect of early foreign policy how the Articles of Confederation were insufficient for the young republic, for the United States didn't even have the power to tax so as to raise a navy to fight the Barbary threat. The book also explains how the Barbary Wars fit into the changing relationship with Great Britain and France, the impressment of seamen, and the events that led to the War of 1812.Those who are reading or have read any of the Patrick O'Brian "Master and Commander" books, Lambert's book is likewise relevant, for these books are all talking about the same historical time period and geographic location.

An interesting study of a period of history usualyl overlooked. Shows how important free trade has always been to US.

This book illustrates, in a clear and professional fashion, a generally untold period of American history. It explains well the events and struggles following the war for independence which greatly contributed to the shaping of the U.S. I highly recommend it for any interested in the United States' formative years.

This was a great book, very informative and factual. I would recommend it to others who enjoy naval history.

I would highly recommend this book for all History buffs to polish up on the forgotten campaigns to help protect freedom of the seas and international shipping.

#476,446 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Since my school district has refused to buy any new textbooks since 2000, I buy up cheap copies to keep in my classroom. By the way, even though the text was published in 2000, the content is from 1996. My students love to laugh at the fashions and "celebrities" mentioned in the book. Oh, and don't forget the chapter on technology. Can you say "fax machine" in Spanish? My students can.

I am a high school Spanish teacher. Since my high school refuses to buy new textbooks, we are still using these out-of-print texts originally published in 1996. I buy them when I find them cheap on Amazon. I'm trying to build a class set with my own money, so I look for really a cheap price.

I am very happy with this purchase. The book was in excellent condition. I just wish I had the answers key.

I have been using the textbook to tutor. This is a great supplement for the book. Lots of great exercises and practice. They even have a tutorial above many sections so that kids can have an idea of what they are conjugating.

We use this curriculum for Spanish in our homeschool and it is extremelyeasy to learn from. We used Rosetta Stone first before we learned aboutthis curriculum and Rosetta Stone was a good foundational tool as well.We would highly recommend this curriculum for learning Spanish 1 and 2.

Good product

Exactly as expected. No surprises. It was just what I was looking for. It matched the book my students got for class.

it was better than the one I previously had!
