Dead Wake proves them right...History at its harrowing best." —New York Daily News"A quickly paced, imminently readable exploration of an old story you may only half-know."—Arkansas Democratic Gazette "We all know how the story ends, but Larson still makes you want to turn the pages, and turn them quickly. What makes the story, is that Larson takes a few main characters--the Lusitania's Captain William Thomas Turner, President Woodrow Wilson, U-boat Captain Walther Schweiger, Boston bookseller Charles Lauriat, architect Theodate Pope, and a few minor ones--and weaves them together towards the inevitable and tragic conclusion. Larson has done his research. The number of details and anecdotes that he has managed to cobble together are fascinating in themselves."—Foreign Policy"Larson turns this familiar tale into a finely written elegy on the contingency of war."—Maclean's Magazine“Larson is a master storyteller and quickens the pace as target and attackers hurtle toward their inevitable, deadly rendezvous. The suspense builds because readers care about his fully-formed characters, and it’s not always clear who will live and who will die.”—Salon"Because Larson has such a sense of story, when he gets to the tragedy itself, the book hums along in vivid form. You feel, viscerally, what it's like to be on a sinking ship, and the weight of life lost that day. The fact that this is coming through a page-turner history book, where all the figures and details reveal an impeccable eye and thorough research, is just one of the odd pleasures of Larson's writing."—Flavorwire“[Larson] thrillingly chronicles the liner’s last voyage... He draws upon a wealth of sources for his subject – telegrams, wireless messages, survivor depositions, secret intelligence ledgers, a submarine captain’s war log, love letters, admiralty and university archives, even morgue photos of Lusitania victims… Filled with revealing political, military and social information, Larson’s engrossing Dead Wake is, at its heart, a benediction for the 1,198 souls lost at sea.”—Tampa Bay Times"Larson, an authority on nonfiction accounts, expounds on our primary education, putting faces to the disaster and crafting an intimate portrait in Dead Wake. A lover of history will get so close to the story...that it is hard not to feel as if you are on board with new friends..."—Fort Worth Star-Telegram"In a well-paced narrative, Larson reveals the forces large and small, natural and man-made, coincidental and intentional, that propelled the Lusitania to its fatal rendezvous...Larson's description of the moments and hours that followed the torpedo's explosive impact is riveting...Dead Wake stands on its own as a gripping recounting of an episode that still has the power to haunt a reader 100 years later."—Buffalo News"Larson, who was once described as "an historian with a novelist's soul," has written a book which combines the absorbing tenor of fiction with the realities of history."—The Toronto Sun"[Larson] shows that narrative history can let us have it both ways: great drama wedded to rigorous knowledge. The German torpedoing of the great ship 100 years ago was almost as deadly as the Titanic sinking, and far more world-changing. Larson makes it feel as immediate and contingent as the present day."—NY Mag's Vulture.com"The bestselling author of The Devil in the White City and Thunderstruck puts his mastery of penning parallel narratives on display as he tells the tale of the sinking of the Lusitania by a German submarine, building an ever-growing sense of dread as the two vessels draw closer to their lethal meeting...He goes well beyond what's taught in history classes to offer insights into British intelligence and the dealings that kept the ship from having the military escort so many passengers expected to protect it...By piecing together how politics, economics, technology, and even the weather combined to produce an event that seemed both unlikely and inevitable, he offers a fresh look at a world-shaking disaster."—The Onion A/V Club"An intriguing, entirely engrossing investigation into a legendary disaster."—Kirkus Reviews, starred review"Factual and personal to a high degree, the narrative reads like a grade-A thriller."—Booklist, starred review"[Larson] has always shown a brilliant ability to unearth the telling details of a story and has the narrative chops to bring a historical moment vividly alive. But in his new book, Larson simply outdoes himself...What is most compelling about Dead Wake is that, through astonishing research, Larson gives us a strong sense of the individuals—passengers and crew—aboard the Lusitania, heightening our sense of anxiety as we realize that some of the people we have come to know will go down with the ship. A story full of ironies and 'what-ifs,' Dead Wake is a tour de force of narrative history."—BookPage, Top Pick"With a narrative as smooth as the titular passenger liner, Larson delivers a riveting account of one of the most tragic events of WWI...A blunt reminder that war is, at its most basic, a matter of life and death."—Publishers Weekly"Once again, Larson transforms a complex event into a thrilling human interest story. This suspenseful account will entice readers of military and maritime history along with lovers of popular history."—Library Journal"Critically acclaimed 'master of narrative nonfiction' Erik Larson has produced a thrilling account of the principals and the times surrounding this tumultuous event in world history...After an intimate look at the passengers, and soon-to-be victims, who board in New York despite the warning of 'unrestricted warfare' from the German embassy, Larson turns up the pace with shorter and shorter chapters alternating between the hunted and the hunter until the actual shot. All in all a significant story. Well told."—Florida Times-Union"...the tension mounts page by page and the reading of Dead Wake becomes a very cinematic experience." —Summit DailyFrom the Hardcover edition.

This is a wonderfully written piece of fiction that brings a hundred year old event to life in an easy to read style. It almost reads like a novel. times, The chapters dealing with the attack and the escape attempts were stark and bone chilling even as the reader knows the results. The author does an excellent job brings depicting the lead characters including Walther Schwieger , Woodrow Wilson, and Wm. Turner as well as many passengers aboard the ill-fated ship. More importantly he shed life on some conspiracy theories that I was unaware of before reading this book. He lays out a fairly convincing case that British officials may have deliberately allowed the Lusitania to be sunk so that America would enter the war. Even if not a deliberate plot, they may have recklessly permitted the act. And the parallels of room 40 with the enigma code in War 11 were uncanny. This is a wonderful book that will leave you troubled and deeply saddened by the loss of 1lmost 1,200 lives so long ago.

Erik Larson is not capable of writing anything less than a gripping account of history. All of his previous books have been spellbinding accounts of storms, cities, crimes, inventions, ships and/or war. In DEAD WAKE: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania, Larson returns to the subjects of war and ships and stirs in a potent mixture of international politics as well as a little romance to once again seduce his readers with a contemporary view of an historical situation.Written to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania, a Cunard passenger liner sunk by a German U-Boat, Larson's account differs in several ways from other well-known books produced on the subject. Diana Preston's LUSITANIA: An Epic Tragedy, published in 2002, is one of the best-written accounts of the disaster. The difference between Preston's work and Larson's might be found in the subtitle of the Larson book which emphasizes the crossing while Preston's book is most memorable for its account of the sinking and its aftermath, particularly accounts of survival. No one can read Preston's book without feeling as if he/she is clinging to a piece of wreckage in a cold, spring sea awaiting rescue. No one can read Larson's book and not feel like the proverbial fly on the wall in the infamous Room 40 of the British Admiralty. While Preston addressed Room 40, in Larson's writing, the room takes on a role and becomes a character (albeit not a very appealing one) in its own right.Larson skillfully gets into the mindset of Winston Churchill and how determined he was to see America enter the war. In the States, Larson goes back in time and brings President Woodrow Wilson to life through a love affair that seemed to take up more of his time than thinking about the suitability of America's neutrality. Yet Larson allows readers to see Wilson in a most human light; perhaps the love affair gave him the strength for the decisions he had to make later. While the reader feels a connection with Wilson and also with the much-maligned but ultimately blameless Captain of the Lusitania, Captain Turner, utter horror and strong dislike is brought out when we read about Captain Schwieger of U-Boat 20 and, in a strange way, perhaps even more when we examine the real-life characters and goings-on within the Admiralty's Room 40. Germany and Britain both emerge as more than a bit despicable. The pluses of Larson's latest work are his acute examination of Room 40, his up-close look at Woodrow Wilson, and his ability to swing between the behind-the-scenes action and balance his discoveries with a conventional but absorbing look at some of the passengers on board the Lusitania all while building a true and terrifying suspense in the narrative. His profile of Charles Lauriat, Boston bookseller and collector of rare documents and drawings, is excellent. One senses that Larson was truly interested in Lauriat and might, having not been faced with producing a book to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Lusitania's sinking, have chosen Lauriat as a sole subject for a book or article.Erik Larson can never disappoint. Whether one reads a great deal about WWI history, maritime disasters, or early 1900s international politics, there is something new to be learned in DEAD WAKE. For those who have read very little about the Lusitania, this book is an excellent starting point. As mentioned before, Diana Preston's LUSITANIA: An Epic Tragedy tells a similar story but with a slightly different approach. Both books have something to offer, but Larson's, being newer, may include some fresh revelations about the history we thought we knew.

Retelling a story that has been told many times already is either foolish (what’s new?) or courageous (see what’s new!). Larson successfully manages to bring a fresh perspective to a tale that I felt I knew.Dead Wake- The Last Crossing of the Lusitania is a surprisingly well crafted re-telling of a known event. Despite knowing the outcome - the loss of nearly 1,200 souls at the hands of a German U-boat in the spring of 1917 - Larson keeps pulling the reader along. He does so by adopting many perspectives - those of passengers on the cruise ship, crew members on the U-boat, Woodrow Wilson in the White House to name just a few - with just the right amount of telling detail to bring the reader into the moment. Reading Dead Wake is a tutorial in early twentieth century naval architecture, morality, social manners and political history.Larson shows how the sinking of the Lusitania was, for many, a “Straw that Broke the Camel’s Back”. Taken in isolation, this was a tragedy. Indeed, the captains of the Lusitania and the U-Boat, Cunard executives, Woodrow Wilson, Winston Churchill and Kaiser Wilhelm made assumptions about each other’s behaviors and interests which proved to be tragically wrong. Put in the context of the beginning of World War I, the sinking altered the course of history by dragging the United States into the conflict. In other ways, the event was a classical tipping point. One era - the world of Victorian manners and gentlemanly wars - ended and another - the era of global modern warfare and the emergence of American leadership - began. Never again would it be safe to assume a bright line between civilian (commercial) and political (military interests).Hanging over the Lusitania disaster is a sense of avoidable inevitability. If any one of many points along the voyage - slowing down to pick up mail, changing course to get bearings, information not transmitted from British intelligence - had gone differently the Lusitania would not have had a rendezvous with its tragic destiny. It would have steamed calmly into port. However, they didn’t go the other way and history as we now know it unfolded. We now live in a world where we try to take lessons from this eminently avoidable disaster. Technology dependence? The Lusitania was too fast and too big to be sunk. False assumptions about the enemy? The Germans miscalculated British and American reactions. Changing social mores? The British put civilians in harms way for military purposes. For that alone, Larson’s use of history to illuminate the past to help in the present is invaluable. We had our own Lusitania disaster with 9/11. What will the next one be?As with ether books by Eirk Larson (In the Garden of the Beasts and the Devil in the White City) the reader learns not just about the event, but about the era in which the event took place. We are nearly a century beyond the values of Victorian England and adolescent America. In some ways we have made progress, in other ways we cling stubbornly to outmoded beliefs which ultimately do us great harm.Read this to know more about the past and to be better prepared for the future.

Like all of Mr. Smith's book, this is fabulous. For some reason I started with volume 3 and have worked my way back. This book is so meaty and chock full of details and diagrams. Like Mr. Smith's other books, there is nothing "fluffy" about it. Anyone looking for a "make it tonight!" picture book should buy something else. But for the serious student of bookbinding this series is an absolute must. I read and reread Mr. Smith's books, and I learn something new every time.

Can't recommend this book highly enough for learning some non-adhesive book binding. The book is number one a series of three by Keith Smith on non-adhesive binding. Very detailed. Excellent diagrams of difficult sewing sequences, for example the binding off of the final cover of a Coptic-stitch bound book. This book is also a good place to begin studying book binding as it includes less complex binding like pamphlets to get your feet wet.

I enjoy journaling on blank pages and subsequently binding them into journals. Keith Smith's book on non-adhesive binding is an excellent resource for learning non-conventional binding and book structures.I enjoyed the book so much, I eventually made mock-ups of nearly every project in this book AND went on to worth through several other of Smith's books.Smith provides many basic/general techniques in the front of the book followed by specific "recipes." He provides both creative suggestions for content and technical information on structure and assembly. Smith also provides sample photographs of each binding. One minor criticism: many of the projects suggest using very heavyweight paper--almost watercolor paper--instead of textweight or lightweight. I had to tweak the instructions for binding the lightweight paper I use for journaling.

Excellent book. The amount of time it took him to get into the actual material was rather irksome (several rather artsy "visualize the book" chapters before getting to the bindings), but that is a sign of the author being passionate about his work and is a credit to him. I was a bit surprised that one part of the book took material almost verbatim from Shereen LaPlante's "Cover to Cover". Even so, this is a seminal work that should be in every bookbinder's working library.

Keith Smith's books are a very valuable and reliable source of information for the serious amateur or professional bookbinder. I have collect all five of his non-adhesive binding books and dont think I could work without them. They have introduced me to bindings unfamiliar to me and have shown me how to make them. Sometimes I have trouble understanding his more complicated diagrams, but if one starts by reading the Vol.1, it helps to understand how he draws his more complicated diagrams later on. This is a great book for a beginner.

For anyone who binds their own sketchbooks you NEED this book. Keith Smith's bindings are out of this world and everybody I know that is into making their own journals or books has THIS book in their bookcase. Very detailed diagrams of the stitchings for lots of different bindings and I learned a lot from this book. A must have!!

The guy is a genious. That's a fact. But he kind of drag you inside his dream of bookbinding and poetry.. could be a shorter book...but he is the author !I recomend buying volums 2 and 5.

Seven library books and one other purchased on amazon did not give me the information contained in 1/4 of this book. The instructions are clear, the diagrams good and the author also gives details on the benefits of a particular binding. If someone were to ask me to suggest one book for learning how to bind a book, this would be the one. Thank you Keith A. Smith!

As a frequent visitor to NYC, I found this book to be quite refreshing. I learned a little history about places I'd seen, but knew anything about. The photographs were a great addition, beautiful and clear. The small tidbits of information made it just a bit more personal. I have recommended it to friends who are making a journey to the,"City" and can't wait to go back and treasure hunt these places out.

I am Native New Yorker & learned so many new places. I had the book laying on my shelf and another local browsed & loved it so I gave it as a gift—now I need to buy another!!!

Disappointed. Am in NYC as I write this. The Chaim Gross Village Studio doorbell went unanswered (on a Friday after 1pm). I couldn't find the Microcosm down the dark Cortlandt Alley. And no sign of the Berlin Wall segment in Midtown. I guess it's time to update the book.

Exceeded my expectations. Excellent pictures and descriptions.

good service. Got it to give as a gift to give to New Yorkers. Hopefully they will like it.

A treasure of a book about fun places in New York City-- many of them rare finds, even for those of us who have lived near the city all of our lives. The book is well written with great illustrations. Page after page of unexpected surprises and the directions to get you there! Thank you Joanne Elikann, for a book that will allow so many to find excitement and enjoyment in our wonderful city.

Lots of place I did not know about.

Great even for folks residing in NYC. Unique places to visit.

Every member of the Church should read this book, even if you already have a solid testimony of it, it will strengthen and solidify the truth. If you’re struggling with a testimony then it will help you see that it was produced as Joseph Smith said it was.

Excellent summary of rational evidences for the Book of Mormon while still maintaining that a testimony of the book must be gained through the holy ghost.

I devoured this impactful book in about six hours and promptly purchased additional copies for family and friends. I volunteer as Executive Director of the non-profit think tank Book of Mormon Central, cited frequently herein. Elder Callister is up-to-date with his scholarship, but this work goes well beyond narrow scholarly interests. It is a good balance between certitude and polemic, spiritual and intellectual, doctrinal and narrative. The personal and third-party stories are superb. Elder Callister spent 34 years as a tax attorney, and his logical, precise thinking shows through on every page. His writing is eloquent but endearing and approachable. He tackles some hard problems, working through the issues clearly and persuasively. And he bears a powerful personal testimony. If you enjoyed Elder Callister's superb address "God's Compelling Witness: The Book of Mormon" in October, 2017 General Conference, you will love this book.

The author, Tad R. Callister, is a General Authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has written 3 other books that I highly recommend. "The Infinite Atonement" is easily the best exposition of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ and what that means. His other books on apostasy and Church organization are not far behind. In this book he explores the miraculous and superb Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Christ. This is not a commentary on the Book of Mormon, nor is it an exposition of its doctrines. Rather this book documents and categorizes the support from multiple sources of the veracity of the Book of Mormon - a foundational scripture of the Church of Jesus Christ.Callister starts out by noting that the book itself is the best way to determine the value and truth of the book. He notes that either the book is what it says it is or it is a fraud. There is no middle ground. Basically the same argument that CS Lewis and others make for Christianity in general. In Part 2, the author takes common criticisms and responds to them. One criticism that has been used in the past (but not so much now with all the general support for the milieu of the Book of Mormon) are supposed anachronisms - modern things put into ancient settings where they don't belong. There really aren't any that stand up on examination.Another criticism has been the inclusion of some things not known about New World Civilizations. Time after time, things that were felt to be from the imagination of Joseph Smith, founding Prophet of the restored Church of Jesus Christ, turned out to be true. There really is no explanation other than Smith really was a Prophet who really did translate the Book of Mormon by the gift and power of God. Cement in the America's thousands of years ago turned out to be true as were many other statements such as the existence of horses and barley. Then there is a section on the incredible doctrine of Jesus Christ that could only be from divine sources. There are several chapters on the undeniably rock-solid testimonies of the multiple witnesses of the gold plates from which the Book of Mormon was translated. The last part of the book is a challenge and listing of ways to prove the book to the individual. In the end, one becomes a follower of Christ mostly through inspiration more than archaeological or historical proofs. So it is with the Book of Mormon.5 stars for an excellent survey of the many categories of evidence for the veracity of the Book of Mormon and how to find out for yourself that it is a modern scriptural testimony of the Christ.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

In this book, Tad Callister responds in detail to arguments advanced by critics of the Book of Mormon, presents substantial evidence of many critics’ biases, explores compelling evidence that the Book of Mormon is true, and most importantly explores the spiritual value of the book, showing how it testifies of Christ, restores lost doctrine, corrects doctrinal errors, changes our hearts, and draws us to Christ. Finally, he explains why a testimony of the Book of Mormon can only be acquired by personal revelation through the Holy Ghost and how a person can obtain that witness. It is a book for sincere seekers of truth. I have wished for it for many years. Now Tad Callister has written it.
