From the Back Cover

At a time when Congressional investigations have taken on added importance and urgency in American politics, this book offers readers a rare, insider’s portrait of the world of US Congressional oversight. It examines specific oversight investigations into multiple financial and offshore tax scandals over fifteen years, from 1999 to 2014, when Senator Levin served in a leadership role on the US Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI), the Senate’s premier investigative body.                                                                                                                Despite mounting levels of partisanship, dysfunction, and cynicism swirling through Congress during those years, this book describes how Congressional oversight investigations can be a powerful tool for uncovering facts, building bipartisan consensus, and fostering change, offering detailed case histories as proof. Grounded in fact, and written as only an insider could tell it, this book will be of interest to financial and tax practitioners, policymakers, academics, students, and the general public.

About the Author

For nearly 30 years beginning in 1985, Elise Bean worked as legal counsel to Senator Carl Levin (D-MI) on the US Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. In 2003, Senator Levin appointed her his staff director and chief counsel on the Committee’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. In early 2015, Senator Levin retired from the Senate, and so did Ms. Bean. She then helped establish in his honor the Levin Center at Wayne Law in Detroit. During her tenure with Senator Levin, Ms. Bean handled a variety of complex investigations including matters involving money laundering, tax abuse, corruption, unfair credit card practices, health care fraud, abuses involving derivatives and structured finance, commodity speculation, and shell companies with hidden owners. Investigations headed by Ms. Bean included inquiries into the 2008 financial crisis, HSBC money laundering problems, the London whale trades at JPMorgan Chase, the collapse of Enron, and offshore tax dodging by Apple, Microsoft, and Caterpillar. In 2013 and 2011, the Washingtonian named her one of Washington’s 100 most powerful women. In 2010, Ms. Bean was selected by the National Law Journal as one of Washington’s most influential women lawyers.Ms. Bean graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wesleyan University, USA, in 1978, and received her law degree from the University of Michigan, USA, in 1982. When I returned to DC from 20+ months in Iraq in early 2007, I was mentally fried and by and large disillusioned with the federal government, Congress in particular. After a month of Grand Theft Auto and aimless all night wandering around the National Mall I decided to quit whining about govt dysfunction and ante up by joining Senator Coleman’s staff at the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, where I met Elise Bean, Senator Levin’s tireless Staff Director for our Democratic counterparts. Over the next two plus years I had the privilege of joining Bob Roach, Zack Schram, Laura Stuber and others in their relentlessly thoughtful investigations into the malpractice of financial institutions and their government regulators, in a wholly bipartisan manner (& not coincidentally test driving many of the ideas that became the country’s first citywide data analytics team under Mike Bloomberg), while forging lifelong friendships across the aisle based on a shared passion for justice and respectful disagreement on what that looked like.In this book Elise captures all that with the same integrity and detailed but compelling story telling she brought to bear on the targets of Senator Levin’s withering scrutiny. Read this book and see what Congress can look like when we are ready to be our best selves again.

As Senator Levin says in his Forward to Elise Bean’s new book, “Congressional oversight, when pursued on a bipartisan basis, has long served as an essential check on the executive branch and on misconduct in the private sector.” Ms. Bean has chronicled 15 turbulent years of financial investigations conducted by the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. These investigations were led by Senator Levin and his staff working in a bipartisan fashion with his counterparts on the other side of the aisle and their staff. These groundbreaking investigations into money laundering, tax evasion, unfair financial practices, financial fraud, and causes of the financial crisis, provide lessons about the power of congressional oversight and a road map for going forward. It is a must read for anyone who wants a reminder of how Congress can work in a bipartisan manner to conduct oversight for the benefit of the American people.

Elise Bean, in a beautifully written book, demonstrates the value of Congressional oversight and investigation as well as the key role of bipartisanship. She tells the story of some of the most important government tasks at a time when it is ever more critical that we focus on them. Her ability to illustrate her points with understandable and powerful examples makes this book not only a tool and guide for those such as journalists and government staff but, just as importantly, it readily provides insight for anyone interested in the role of good government and the values we must not lose.

A concise, well-organized and engagingly written account of how the Hill works. As one who follows the news but who is not political or an insider, I learned so much from Ms. Bean's book. It is a fascinating read. Particularly after the recent debacles of Committee hearings, Financial Exposure gives one hope for a resurrection of bipartisanship. Not only is it a timely book, future historians will use this text for context and to better understand the period.

Congress should do more of this work.I learned a lot from this book about issues that matter, like the financial crisis, money laundering, and tax dodging. Congress should do more of this type of work.

An excellent insider's view of how Congress investigates complex issues -- and has done so in the case of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations on a bipartisan basis. A very personal and uplifting account that also serves as a course in Congressional authority and the many facets of international finance and tax policy.

"Foreign money laundering, corporate tax evasion, the 2008 financial crisis -- these topics couldn't be more relevant today. Those interested in understanding complex financial topics and how Senate investigators work will find this book to be a wonderful primer. As someone with no background in finance or politics, I found the writing to be clear, concise and highly readable - Investigations 101. The chapter on PSI's investigation into the 2008 financial crisis alone is worth the price of the book - I finally get it now."

This should rank as among the very best accounts ever written of financial and tax fraud by banks and the U.S. and international financial sectors. If you thought Lehman Brothers was bad, this book will leave you furious at how the banks and other financial organizations scam the system and flout the law. It contains many jaw-dropping examples of stunningly dishonest business practices and how congressional investigations exposed them. Reporters, politicians, policy-makers and regulators need to read this to see and understand how domestic and global financial predators operate.Elise Bean’s front-row seat on the Senate Permanent Committee on Investigations gives her a unique ability to not just point out the illegalities and back-room dealings, but also a unique perspective about how Congress has worked (sometimes more successfully than others) to stop these crimes.Especially at this point in our history, her call for truly bipartisan and effective congressional investigations can sound like a voice in the wilderness. But ultimately, for all the sordid and disgusting details she lays out of dirty financial (and political) deeds, this is ultimately a positive and uplifting book: Our system has worked, and it can work again, when our representatives (and the people who elect them) are able to rise above tribalism and pay attention to the facts, rather than posturing and partisanship. This book is far more than a mere recitation of colorful (and outrageous) financial crimes—it is also a much-needed roadmap to how our government can expose and stop it in the future.

VERY LITTLE CONTENTShort collection of personal pet peeves of author with very few details about Australian culture. Provides examples of a few vernacular words but nothing that would assist you in understanding the cultural context of the English spoken there, unless perhaps if you spent time in a dive bar in some remote area (to which there are numerous referrals). No value in understanding business or everyday life in Australia.

This Sheila enjoyed this brief tongue in cheek view of Americans and Australians face to face. As with most humor, there is an anchor of truth in all of the wit. As an American going to Australia soon, I am ready to relax and enjoy a good beer.

This is an interesting read into the mind of an Australian and his views on American Australian relationships. It’s humorous and educational but honestly feels lacking when it really comes to Australian mindset. There’s ton of information about US AU military relations thanks to the authors service time but outside of that it’s a bit tunnel visioned in the grand scheme of Australian thought.

This is a good 1-2 hour read. It has enough insight and good information to retain, but not overkill. I also enjoyed the humor. Well worth it.

This book is a fast read. It is written in such a way to give a lot of information and history while at the same time being very funny.

Lots of useful information provided in an easy-to-read and humorous way. Enjoyed it a lot.

If you want to learn a bit of Australian slang while getting a bit of history from the author, this book delivers. It could have contained a bit more of general Australian history, but it's a pretty decent primer on how not to be a tool when visiting Oz.

Ok, I may be a little biased but having visited Australia, I can say I wished I'd read this first! I read other books with expansive info on Australia but didn't convey nearly as much as this one. It is also quite amusing and made me laugh out loud!

Review

"Bevin Alexander, an experienced military historian who writes with clarity and alarm, here presents a new and insightful interpretation of Hitler's lost opportunities to win World War II. In the process Alexander gives us a concise history of the war in Europe."-- Martin Blumenson, author of The Patton Papers and Patton: The Man Behind the Legend"In his latest book, How Hitler Could Have Won World War II, author Bevin Alexander has synthesized and analyzed the military campaigns by Germany under Hitler's control in such a readable fashion as to intrigue both armchair generals as well as serious students of military strategy and tactics. It should be a required text for study at all military schools and war colleges."-- Thomas H. Moorer, Admiral, U.S. Navy (Ret.), former chairman, U.S. Joint chiefs of Staff"Speculation is the handmaiden of a historian's search for a story of the past.... Bevin Alexander has compiled his 'What if?'s' into a fascinating, plausible and, in retrospect, alarming scenario of what might have been if only Hitler had been a bit more rational, a bit better at grand strategy."-- F. J. Kroesen, former commander-in-chief, U.S. Army-Europe, and commander, NATO Central Army GroupFrom the Hardcover edition.

#724,797 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book initially talks at length about the wasted time, the time after the fall of France, when the Germans were at the zenith of their military prowess and the Allies hadn't yet figured it out. As identified in the book there were waste chances, primarily in the Mediterranean area, and the foolish strategies in Russia in 1941 & 1942. After that point the book is pretty much pointless as the only differences were more tactical in nature rather than strategic, I.E. better distribution of forces in France and a quicker response to the allied invasion in 1944, so what, at that point the war was already lost and any military improvements would have only prolonged the war, not won it. All in all a good and reasonably accurate 60% of the whole book, the second part is filler.

I think this is a well thought out book. Although it could have taken a few more steps with its conclusions, you always run the risk of getting too far away from facts and into the fantastical. I think it is a good read and worth the money.

The book brings an integrated picture of WW2, and explain the advantages of the German Army during 1939-1942. The style is very friendly to the reader. I recommend it

Good book. Very accurate to tell how Hitler and the Third Reich lost the war and how they could have won. The book just doesn't go to the roots and the real causes of the first two world wars. Another words if you're a good or a renowned historian you know what to and what not to write about and controversial times because that's money and sales and people not boycotting you. "Post world war anti German propaganda.". The victors write history."

The most convincing part of this book is the claim that the way to deal with the Soviet Union was not a frontal assault in 1941 but a Mediterranean campaign to drive the British out of Egypt and occupy all the Middle East with their huge oil reserves. Hitler's strategic mistake is dated as April 21 1941 as the Balkans campaigns were winding down. He had decided to attack Crete rather than Malta which meant that the Mediterranean theater was doomed to be a sideshow as he prepared to attack Russia directly. Once Hitler had decided on a two front war with Britain still defiant and with America in the wings, the author says, the war was irrevocably lost. The book also covers Hitler's other blunders, although there is a lot of straightforward military narrative - particularly on the Eastern Front - which could perhaps have been pruned. There is some analysis in the book which was new to this reviewer, including Hitler's nonsensical interest in capturing the Azores, the Canaries and the Cape Verde Islands whose strategic value he greatly overestimated. Bevin Alexander's interpretation of his theme is an interesting contrast with Richard Ovary's book on why the allies won.

In this keenly researched and finely analyzed essay, the author makes many good points and raises several powerful arguments. Begins with an analysis of what der Fuehrer did right (conquest of Poland and the West) and takes up the counter-argument at the point he began to go terribly wrong (by ordering the unnecessary attack on Crete while ignoring the much more strategically important island of Malta). With the benefit of hindsight, it is always easy to say, as many post-war writers have, that Hitler should never have ordered Barbarossa; but this was realized by nearly the whole of Hitler's officer corps, who almost as one tried to warn him beforehand of the dangers of campaigning in the immensity of Russia (as a corporal in WW1 Hitler, unlike many of his Generals, had spent the war in France and probably had no concept what war in the endless miles of steppe in the East involved; in terrain that merely opens like a gigantic funnel of thousands of miles of steppe, swamp and forest to engulf any army bold enough to invade). The author makes many fascinating arguments and poses several questions that will never be answered such as: What if Hitler had listened to his expert commanders, including military geniuses such as Admiral Raeder, Rommel, Guderian and von Manstein and simply called off Barbarossa in favor of a Mediterranean strategy instead? (Amazingly, towards the end of Manstein's own memoirs "Lost Battles" ,he dismisses out of hand, the whole idea of a Mediterranean strategy! From someone who was key to Hitler's strategy from the beginning to late 1944, and who certainly knew better, this argument is false). The author points out the many advantages of this strategy if Hitler had simply NOT turned East: a quick capture of the Suez canal, then all of North Africa (quickly resulting in German occupation of the SOUTH side of the striaghts of Gibralter, thus turning the Mediterranean into an Axis lake!), and thereafter securing German surplus of the life-blood of the Wehrmacht - oil - by another quick conquest of the middle-east oil fields in Iran, Syria and the Kingdom... after which the Germans would have no need to attack Russia as they would effectively threaten the Soviet Union from the south, thus in the author's view, bottling up Russia and Turkey as well as completely driving out the British from the Mediterranean and Africa, while allowing German access to the south Atlantic (allowing German aircraft and U-boats a greater operating radius from western Africa). The author makes many great arguments (although he seems to assume that the British and Russians would be inert through all this and doesn't even speculate at their possible counter-moves while Germany is busy carrying out this strategy). The author's arguments are not perfect, however, he raises many interesting questions as to "what if"...But for all its flaws, this book is fascinating reading about "what if" - and perhaps raises enough speculation for yet another book on the topic. thankfully, we will never know how whether a strategy as outlined in this book, would have resulted in a German victory in WW2 (and it might even be beneficial to write a follow-up speculating at the counter-strategy the British, Americans and Russians might have done in response to all these moves!). If you know WW2 as well as the author certainly does, you may read this book and come up with many questions of your own - and of course, there are many factors left out of the arguments and counter-arguments that might change the author's assumptions. All in all, a great book and one that could fuel a hundred discussions on the matter.

Review:By now there should be no surprise that I anticipate and welcome any YA set in Japan, be it in a modern or historical settings, everything goes. I’ve read the previous two books in this engaging, imaginative and action-packed series and thoroughly enjoyed them, and I’m quite sad it took me so long to finally pick up the final book. What I discovered is that everything I found awesome previously is still there, but so are heaps of other aspects that just make the last book cramped and full of various plot devices, unnecessary additions, stalling, and despite including all these new things, the story somewhat dragged and felt really slow.Zombies and vampires and dragons, oh my! That was the source of why I felt this final book lacking. Vampire ninjas as unique twist to the story was ingenious to me and when I heard about the dragon, it was still quite exciting, but when the zombies come around and then the god of death and why oh why can’t that creepily annoying villain Kenji Kira already hit the bucket, then it started to become a bother. There was for sure lots of action, close calls, incredibly tense and oh-my-god-what’s-going-to-happen moments, but all these heaps of bad guys against our poor trio of heroes, who had internal relationship issues as well, wasn’t really encouraging and pleasant to follow. Also, poor Taro, I genuinely felt sorry for him in this book, how much torture, physical pain, emotional pain, betrayal can one person bear.Despite my whining, I still more or less liked the book, it had a really satisfying conclusion and I was left leaving the series with a smile on my face. I was really happy on how everything was pulled together and all the fates were more than earned. I also absolutely loved the confrontation between Lord Tokugawa and Taro, it was a long time coming and I was on the edge of my seat when they finally met for real, face to face. What a wonderful final showdown they had. Also, Nobunaga was a great villain in the two previous books and Kenji Kira was only disgusting, but the one with more momentum and the main adversary was without a doubt Tokugawa. While the main gang of three were already from the start somewhat of a cliché: a boy with a destiny, his tough friend and a beautiful strong-willed lady love - I thought they made a decent team and I quite liked all three of them. I’m happy that everything wasn’t smooth sailing for them in this book and various issues came up that were in the long run unavoidable and the separations they went through were good for character development and strengthening bonds, especially for the two sidekicks. I’m glad that the both of them also were able to see each other and survive without Taro by their side all the time.Overall:I can say that this was an excellent series with imagination, fights, adventure, Japanese mythology and, most of all, my favourite setting, especially since feudal settings for Japan-themed YA books are incredibly rare. The final book was based on some aspects a slight let down, because there was just too much of everything in it, but it still worked and the previous two were so good that they compensated slightly for the spots lacking. I’m quite sad that this series doesn’t have as many readers as it deserves though, because I guess, it is somewhat of a niche mix of setting and genre. Still, give the series a try, especially if you enjoy historical adventure, action and manga.

to give a review I feel one must of read all three books which I have. I found this fictional story to be a good read. learning about friendship, honor, lies betrayal and much more. that doing what's right isn't always easy but getting more satisfaction out of life and feeling better about ones self by doing what you know in your heart is the right thing to do. I found myself getting obsorbed in the story page after page. there are some inconsistencies as I read but all in all the author did a good job. I'm not good at criticizing. Mr Nick Lake wrote a trilogy I can honestly say was worth buying and would happy to read another fictional story by him.abg

Bad condition! Very disappointed.

I think the Blood Ninja series is a great series. I'm into SciFi and fantasy and this series satisfied my cravings. I really like how the book doesn't pull any punches. The violence is brutal but very real.

Amazing book

Not as good as the first book. Better than the second book. There are historical aspects of this whole trilogy that really bugged me. I know that authors are entitled to some leeway with the historical facts. Especially in a story about vampires. But throughout the trilogy you get the feeling that author is trying to convey the spirit of feudal Japan, yet is so far off with the facts. The truth is that it is obviously intentional as I am sure the author's knowledge of the period is pretty sound, he just takes it way off base. Granted this will only matter to those who are extremely interested in feudal Japan. All in all it is a good book and it is worth reading. Though scholar's of the period will have to grit their teeth a bit.

I like the setting of the book. I enjoyed that it was during futol Japan. the twist that all ninjas are vampires was seriously cool.

Good product as described.
