Generously rounding up 3 & 1/2 stars to 4 since this was definitely better than 3 stars. This was a pretty good read. Though there were a few places that needed more info to fill in blanks in the world building (like when/how did the gargoyles originally start protecting humans, there was a bit of a suggestion about fighting dragons originally but nothing else) or less sub-plots to make things less muddied, which would definitely make the story flow smoother. The main characters, Kaya & Rafael, are very likable, which made me want to see how this turned out. The secondary characters were also likable enough for me to want to read the rest of the books in the series. It was a promising series in my opinion. The down side, the author needs to try to limit the sub-plots, they bogged down the main story too much. I understand wanting to link plots together into making a series, to drive sales, but there were way too many links in just this one book that were left hanging incomplete. Also, names were a big problem, when introducing so many new secondary characters (it was almost a necessity to introduce them for the sake of the story- I'm not complaining about that- hard to wage a war on the unholy without an army), but to keep it from being so confusing, maybe the use of the whole name in the first introduction of the character, with some mention that he/she prefers to go by...then stick to the nickname. but to keep mingling the nickname and full or last names throughout the story was very confusing. A few times I had to backtrack to figure out who was who. One such was Dane Abbott. I did not recall reading his last name, I'm sure it was there, everyone in the story referred to him as Dane up to a point but then the police chief refers to him as Abbott instead of Dane. I was like who is Abbott? Then there was Frey/Geoffrey, or Michael/Sixx, some easier to deal with ones were - Sin/Sinclair, or Nikolas/Nik, & there were a few more that I'm not remembering as I write this review.

Gargoyles are my absolute favorite type of paranormal creature. And, Faith Gibson takes them to another level. These shifters are Protectors and have their own society. They protect New Atlanta and have not been known to mate with humans. Rafe as King of the gargoyles was competent yet such a humble man. He really thought about his choices and always tried to do his best for his brothers. I was so happy he found a mate in Kaya. She was a strong heroine who held her own in a field dominated by males. I loved the romance in this book. However, what really attracted me was the urban fantasy style of writing. The world building was fantastic, leading the way for other books in this series and definitely peaking my curiosity for more information. I also appreciated the character development, learning about others within the clan and hoping their stories would be told. This was a very well written novel. I will one click any other books in this series as soon as they are available. Highly recommended!

So I have to admit I am newly fascinated with the gargoyles shapshifter paranormal romances I've come across recently. As much as I would have loved to say this book rocked my world it didn't. It had every potential to be a five star book but it just didn't make it. There was every opportunity for this author to rock a new world building, hot new alpha gargoyles men and an interesting story but it just was mediocre. It also reminded me of the BDB series only a C- version. Instead of Stone Society it should be called Boring society. Sad... I was super excited I had found a new series. Good thing this book was free and sitting in my TBR shelf. Not a bad concept just boring and blah execution. 2.5 stars

The romance happened with little depth. Made it feel somewhat fake. The side stories should have been better executed, and just plain better written. At first, I thought they would tie into what was happening with the main characters, but for the most part they didn't, and became very tedious. I'm mostly disappointed with the progression of the female protagonist. She didn't react in any way like a normal person with a brain would react on this situation- with careful thought and reasoning. Even if that reasoning is all in her head. That made the relationship that they developed super quick feel very fake. The sex was good, though.

This book sat on my TBR for way too long, I heard many great things about this book and I should have listened and read this book before now. The main story line is very well written and the characters are great. Rafael is the Alpha and king of the Gargoyles, Kaya is the police chief and a strong independent woman. I love the fact that even with the mate bond, she is still a strong woman and does not turn into a push over to her mate. This book has plenty of action, some suspense, romance and love, a little something for everyone. There are enough sub plots and secondary characters that leave you wanting more and looking forward to the next book in the series. I would recommend this book and look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I'm giving it three stars because the premise is terrific. But when hunky ancient men who turn into flying creatures (and who have never been discovered by humans in all those centuries) are the LEAST preposterous parts of the story, there's a problem. There just seems to be a lot of needless plot complications, e.g Mayan calendar end-of-the-world apocalypse. Also, Kaya has to be the wost chief of police ever. Her sense of duty is shockingly negligent. Her character would have been better served being a prosecuting attorney or something. But the male characters, while numerous, have some good characterization although a bit more descriptive detail would be nice.
