Reviewed by Helen Hollick for Discovering DiamondsFrom line one, page one, of this entertainingnovel, we are treated to action, romance and a story-line that I foundexceptionally convincing in this tale of conflict between York andLancaster. The sights, the smells, thetastes, the sounds - the descriptive writing brings the period vividly alive.There is violence and squalor, poverty and hardship, but also loyalty,steadfastness, a will to survive and, eventually, respect and love.  Richard III is only a background characterhere, which is refreshing as it makes a nice change to not read about him butconcentrate on ordinary 15th century people instead. The main 'goodie' characters are verythree-dimensional, highly believable and likeable. Mind you, our heroine goesthrough the wringer with assaults, attempted rapes imprisonments and such, butis that not what makes a heroine into a heroine? Her ability to survivewhatever horrors are thrown at her? Thehero is equally as fascinating, a man of many surprises. London, the setting for this tale, is asmuch a character as are the people who populate the city and the story. We seeit as it was back in the 1400s: squalid, smelly, dirty, depressing andpoverty-riddled. I am (was) a Londoner and I thought I knew a lot about itshistory - I know even more now, although the narrative here is so well writtenyou don't realise that you are picking up information as you go along. I was satisfied at enjoying a good storywhen I reached the last page, but sorry, too, to have to say farewell to such amotley crew of interesting characters. Barbara Gaskell Denvil fills in the gaps and introduces us to the mysterious Andrew Cobham and his female companion, Tyballis, otherwise known as Blessop's wife. They probe London's sordid underworld and invade the equally dangerous world of the nobility. Damning evidence is uncovered and delivered to Richard who seizes the throne as Richard III. Shakespeare condemned him as the murderer of the princes in the Tower. Later generations have come to question this interpretation of history.Barbara Gaskell Denvil has a mastery of words. Blessop's Wife is well researched and follows the main course of history. Her description of places and events conjures up vivid images. She recreates the world of King Richard and shows a good understanding of that bygone age. Her scenes of political intrigue are brilliant. Her "bedroom scenes" are done with equal subtlety. Readers who like to be immersed in a world of historical intrigue, difficult human relationships, and a very dangerous way of life will relish this novel. It is perfect for those who enjoy a good, long read.

Many of my readers claim that Andrew Cobham is theirfavourite of all my heroes. I love him too. He certainly has lived a highlysecretive life, works where no one sees him, and is rarely understood even bythose who call him friend.Abused by the husband she hates, Tyballis runs away andmeets Andrew. Both their lives change. But Tyballis, as most abused women do,has lost all confidence, and it takes a long time before her courage andindependence grows. I love Andrew too, and Tyballis as well. She graduallylearns and grows and finishes the book as a very different woman to howshe started. But then - love can do strange things. What happens to mycharacters is frequently strange and what they overcome is stranger still. Thisis another crime mystery set in the era of Richard III in England and covershighly accurate historical events with the adventures and exploration offictional characters.This is the longest of my books, Andrew demanded it. Hehad so much to achieve, he informed me, that he needed as many pages as I couldsupply. This also took me longer to write than any other of my books, but Iloved every minute.

I encourage any lover of Medieval novels to read this mystery! Treachery, hatred, treason, and love abound in Blessop's Wife. The characters are strong and memorable. The historical data is spot on. The twists and turns will astound you and the surprise revealing of the villain will leave your mouth hanging open. Read this rich and enticing tale.
Really enjoyed reading this book and found it hard to put down

This novel is set in 1482 England. It is the end of the King Edward IV. Tyballis Blessop is married to an abusive husband and her tyrannical mother-in-law. Tyballis hopes to escape both one day. Tyballis is sent one day to go out and sell her threadbare cape she found and to buy her husband a meat pie for dinner. Out in the streets she meets a poor little urchin girl who ask her if she could have half of Tyballis meat pie. She shares the meat-pie with the little girl and offers to walk her back home. Tyballis expects the little girl to live in a shack or a small crowded house; instead she finds the little girl lives in a huge run-down castle. Owned by Andrew "Drew" Cabham; the little girl tells Tyballis he lets her as well as other "homeless" people to live with him without rent. Tyballis leaves the girl and returns to her husband. A few weeks later, Tyballis is once and for all thrown out into the streets by Baron Throckmorton after being thoroughly beaten. She is found then by Davey Lyttle and takes her out of the streets and takes her back to the rundown castle again to rest and heal. There Tyballis meets the other misfits living in the castle as well as Andrew Cabham himself. And thus begins this huge adventure story that will keep you up at all hours of the night. lol. This book was really was a surprise to me. I expected a bodice ripper/quivering aching body/ wet, quivering pouty lips type of story but instead i got a real substantial medieval political intrigue story worthy of "Outlander" I thought the romance between Andrew and Tyballis was more realistic and natural. It was not lust at first sight and falling in love later. I really enjoyed this book. It reminded me of Robin Hood with Andrew Cabham Band of merry misfits and helping the poor or Shakespere in love b/c it focuses on the every day people of England living in the villages and just trying to live their lives day by day. And not only on the people of the royal court. I really liked that about this book. 5stars. I received this book as an ARC from Hidden Gem and received no payment for my honest review. Great fun.
I am voluntarily reviewing this book after receiving a free copy. Wow! Well developed, multifaceted, relatable characters set in an historical era fraught with political intrigue come together to create a throughly enjoyable book. Unlike so many historical books, Barbara Gaskell Denvil focuses on common people rather than nobility. She brings out the struggles of everyday people as they navigate a world dominated by the whims and self interested power struggles of the elites. I highly recommend this book, it was so good that I couldn't wait to get to the end but when I did I was sad because I wanted it to keep going.
I have read a couple of Ms. Denvil's books and have not been disappointed with any. This book is no exception. It was captivating from the start and I found it hard to take a break from reading. The storyline was intriguing and was definitely thought-provoking. The characters were complex and well developed. There was the right amount of action going on with some romance and suspenseful moments mixed in. Ms. Denvil's writing is wonderful and I enjoyed every minute of reading Blessop's Wife. I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book.
On the positive side this novel had a lot of authentic period detail and there was an interesting mix of characters. On the downside it was much too long and drawn out. Now and again it turns into one of those romance paperbacks with nearly undressed people on the cover. Then it goes back to being a medieval adventure story. To be honest, I was interested in the early chapters and then gave up after hundreds of pages. Not my cup of tea I guess
This historical novel is set in England 1482, at the end of King Edward IV reign and sudden death. The plot encompasses a very hard political struggle for power and the throne. Plotting, spying are rampant while a romance ensues. The treatment of women during this era is appalling but commonly accepted. Loyalties on all sides is questionable.I found the main plot fascinating albeit difficult to follow at times. Apparently there is not much left of the actual history of the time, but the author engineers a plausible scenario given what facts there are.I would heartily recommend to other readers of historical fiction.
