It's always interesting when there is a spread of opinion on a book that ranges from excellent to lousy. I wonder if the negative reviewers have ever been to China and done business there - FYI, yes, I have. First - this book is aimed at small businesses, not multi-nationals. Second - many of the situations he describes are real-world, and I can attest that many are dead on, based on my experience. For a long time I've said that you can make money in China but they make you pay for it. Small businesses can make money in China but it's not automatic and this book is a "must read" for companies thinking of doing business in China.
The book gives an overall picture of business conditions prevailing in China right now. There are some good suggestions on how to conduct business in China; to check whether business should be conducted in China; pitfalls; old clichés no longer relevant because of the ascendency of the "Me" Generation; Dos and Don'ts in China; a roadmap as to how to proceed; cultural differences especially when it comes to the sanctity of contracts; importance of having an in house Chinese translator, etc. Chao's SMB (Small and Medium Businesses) have annual revenues between $10 million and $250 million and even though the book is geared towards them, others can benefit as well as it gives a "good feel" about the prevailing business climate in China. I'd recommend this book to those smaller companies and individuals desirous of doing business in China.
I am a doctorate level business student, and experienced MBA. This is the book which could be a China manual for everyone. It is the definitive 'how too' which is not just a must read, but the base for all future exploits.
since I have started doing business in china I thought it might be a good idea to read up on it and was not disappointed. Mr Chao lays out exactly the problems with Chinese laws and the differences in cultures that one should keep in mind when dealing with the Chinese. I still do business in china but now know what to watch for somewhat better.
I've been working and charging in Chinese market for 3 years in the small company.I can know what I did in Chian, also I can have many ideas about what I am concerned during my business in China. It's really practical and many things referred about how we can do business in China.Strongly suggest to read if you are in charge of Chinese market in small company.
Written by a professional who obviously is very familiar with China business, culture and the West. Very practical "how to" advice for anyone wanting to or already doing business in China. Personal anecdotes and thoughtful frameworks from the author's experience as a fluent Chinese American makes this an eminently useful "Must Have". Thanks Stanley
Good book, sound advice. Some things are applicable to other areas of life and countries. They are common sense.
As an American small business owner looking to try to do business in China this book was helpful read and contained many good ideas well worth the cover price. You could hire a consultant and pay 10x the cost of the book in fact and not get as much good advice. I would recommend reading this book to anyone thinking of doing business in China who isn't listed on an exchange!
