After several years, 12 volumes, several flashbacks and digressions and over 2000 pages of story the Zenith of Things Tournament (ZOTT) comes to an end.I've been a fan of Battle Angel Alita since the 90s, even tracking down the Japanese books rather than wait for the translation. And while the first series was filled with dramatic battles, and interesting monsters, it also had strong character development and drama. Alas its sequel Last Order often ditched character for longer fights and more monsters. By far the worst offender has been the ZOTT which took over the book and often reduced it to 200 pages of kicking, yelling and long-winded cyborgs explaining their martial arts moves.Well now it's over. This book is a lot better than the last few since the fights actually conclude rather than the characters ineffectively trading blows for 200 pages. I won't spoil the ending save to say thank goodness the ZOTT is over.As always Yukito Kishiro delivers fantastic art, interesting visuals and massive battles and this time it seems we got a little bit more. I've been sticking with this series out of inertia and hope for a while. I just hope the next book will see a return to greatness of the first series and even the first few books of Last Order.

These are the only words, spoken by Alita to Yugo, in a frame that fills a whole page in Battle Angel: Alita, 3rd Edition. She offers this profession of love high over the Scrapyard on an access tube leading to the aerial city of Zylem. The artist shows us not blurs and splatters, but instead awesome scope and human frailty. I'd like a framed copy to hang on a wall. What do we do when something like a profession of love goes horribly wrong? The remaining pages of this edition address that question; ripples of dysfunction started by Alita's trauma playout in the context of a vicious sport called motorball, a combination of NASCAR Racing, short-track skating, and medieval warfare for cyborgs. Ultimately, the author proposes that misfortune – such as a shattered relationship – makes us more resilient, a manga presentation of Friedrich Nietzsche's statement, "What does not kill me, makes me stronger." The image used in this manga, though, is blade made stronger by impurities in the steel. I am not sure disaster makes us stronger, but it is a great idea for a story; I'll give this edition five stars, like those previous.Toney Baus is also the author of Son of Sloan

Nova, the villainous researcher who spent much of the first Alita series foiling the efforts of the beautiful cyborg is back. This time with a different agenda. Equipped with the barest fragments of Alita's brain he remakes her, this time with an even better artificial body, the Imaginos. Alita awakens to a world in chaos - Nova has reveled that citizens of Tiphares have had their brains replaced with chips, and the overprotective guardian machines turn on the populace to conceal the secret.Still created and drawn by Yukito Kishiro, this new series has all that magic of its predecessor. Battle Angel Alita remains a fine example of Manga that uses are to expand the imagination at the same time it entertains. For all the spellbinding action and violence, the driving factors behind the series remains the intangibles that separate human from non-human, and life from imitation. For all that Alita is 'made' rather than born, she is clearly more human than the chip-brained adults of Tiphares, who see themselves as the perfection of the species. In the beginnings of a complex plot that pits adults against their children, Alita once again displays both her power and her compassion, We are also granted glimpses of Alita's origins - the promises of explanations that were never forthcoming in the initial series. In a world where sequels are cheap and easy, it's nice to see the effort Kishiro and VIZ publishing have put together to create something even better than its origins. You won't be disappointed.

The last volume before the Battle Angel series switches publishers, this volume has been particularly difficult to get without paying an arm and a leg. While the original series was Alita's journey through the ruined Earth, Last Order follows the "battle tournament" motif of the Rollerball arc, with the fate of the Earth at stake. Although this severely limits the series in many ways, we are still meeting a slew of interesting new characters as well as the history of the Battle Angel universe left unrevealed in the original series. This volume is concerned largely with the beginning of a match between Alita's team and a collection of independent karate masters, with the Earth's sovereignty as the prize. The battles are interesting, but I'd really like to see what happens at the end of this tournament and beyond. I hope the series doesn't just end when this tournament does.
