I highly recommend this translation of Dante's Inferno. For many years, Ciardi's translation has been the standard and it has much to recommend it. But Ciardi's rhymed stanzas are looser, wordier, and less faithful to the original than Thornton's blank verse. Thornton brings us closer to what Dante wrote. And the excellent notes at the end of each canto help bring this masterpiece to life for a modern reader.

With decades of study and meticulous craftsmanship, Dr. Peter Thornton has offered his translation of “The Inferno.” I do not know Italian, but I have read a couple of other translations of “The Inferno,” and I found this one the best for several reasons. First, the poetry is vivid. I felt like orange flames and the stench of Sulphur were my companions as much as were Dante and Virgil.The verse itself is a second reason I liked this translation. The meter – iambic pentameter, the ordinary meter of the English language – does not intrude into the poetry itself. That is, I wasn’t conscious of stretching of words or awkward diction for the sake of the meter.You can enjoy the translation without bothering to read the footnotes, but once you start, you are off on another journey, equally absorbing – this one through contemporary (to Dante) Florentine history, Christian metaphors and allusions, Roman legend and mythology, and Catholic scholars from Augustine on.Read the translation; savor the footnotes. There’s always room for a fresh version of hell.

THANK YOU !! I've been trying to expose my kids to more of the classics. But every translation of the Divine Comedy I've come across has been so difficult that I couldn't even get through Hell (felt like hell trying to read it). UNTIL NOW !!! Thank you Mr. Douglas Neff for this translation. It keeps all the flavor, tension, and character; and stays true to the original story. Reading this translation, I find myself more absorbed and engaged in trying to understand what Dante was trying to get across, and why he picked certain persons for certain levels, and doing research into some of the people, places, vices, etc. that he talks about, instead of spending hours trying to decipher the actual language of the translation. My 7 year old is totally engaged, while at the same time, my 15 year old and I are getting into some very interesting discussions (Dante put Pope Celestine V with those souls who neither heaven nor hell want, because he resigned as Pope . . . I wonder what that means for old former pope Benedict XVI / cardinal Ratzinger who just did the same thing). And none of us are getting ground down by having to stop and try and translate the language.I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get this book. You will not be disappointed. I'm now trying to find a comparable translation of Purgatory and Paradise so we can complete the story.

Dante's THE INFERNO is a classic. Written around 1321, the book predates most of the classics, except Homer's works of course. But even before Shakespeare, this book heralded in an uncommonly twisted and almost perverse story of Dante's descent into Hell and his description of everything he sees and those he meets. It's eloquently written. Not necessarily an easy read but it does tribute to the language and reminds the reader that our vernacular has so much more color than the reductio ad absurdum we see being used today. Dante's descriptions of the nightmare that sinners endure at each level is pretty graphic, sometimes bordering on horrifying, and who knows, he might even be credited with the first narrative on the subject of flesh-eating zombies which are so popular today. The narrative also gives the reader a feel for certain historical relevancies of that and earlier times and how Dante saw the world. This particular version of the book, by John Ciardi, provides excellent descriptive notes after each section, clarifying things mentioned in the story so the reader stays on track. Lastly, I could not help but wonder if the Vatican of that time didn't encourage the book to be written simply because of its thematic message of what happens to sinners, particularly those who sin against God and the Church or become apostates. It certainly provides compelling imagery to anyone who believes in Heaven and Hell. Add it to your reading arsenal - it's worth the read.

This a good introduction book to share the Black history to your children. I wish the illustrated pictures were done a little better. But overall this is a good children's guide to Black History. Well done to Craig Thompson. We need more books like this available.

Quite a delightful cookbook! Does a nice job giving entree to French cuisine. Many recipes are pretty straightforward and doable.There are nice bon bons, such as discussions of truffles, croutons, Armagnac, and spring onions. These little inserts in blue are fun to read.Recipes are interesting. For instance, "Hurry up and wait chicken." This is on my "to do" list for cooking! The recipe shows how you can make sure that you get a juicy--and not dry chicken breast--after heavy duty roasting. Let it sit "on its head" for 10-15 minutes as the juice moves back into the breast. Veal Marengo (a relative of a dish I have made over time, Chicken Marengo).Nibbles and hors d'oeuvres: Lyonnais garlic and herb cheese. We often call this "Boursin" when we purchase this in stores). Doesn't look all that hard to make! There are a number of tartine dishes in this section, too. Tartine Saint-Germain. One thick slice of country bread, mayonnaise, gherkin, a couple paper thin rare roast beef slices, and salt and pepper.Other starters from the soup arena. . . . I love French onion soup, and this book has a nice example. I also really like leek and potato soup. Here, too, this book has a nice recipe--and one that is eminently doableI've only had ceviche a couple times--and my family will not allow me to make it as a dish for a family meal. But under the category "Salads, starters, and small plates," there is a nice Tuna and Mango Ceviche recipe (theoretically, the citrus "cooks" the fish).Anyhow, a nice addition to my kitchen library. Nice photographs illustrate dishes, and there is a richness to the glossy pages.

This book is something every inspiring cook needs to have in their kitchen. I bought several french other cookbooks but none could ever match up to Around My French Table. A good cookbook will guide you into making delicious cuisine. A great cookbook will encourage you to make its recipes over and over again, each time as if it was the first time you prepared it. The pictures also provide guidance into how the meal should look which is very helpful. And the people eating your delicious meals will also give you the positive feedback that will impede you to continue opening the cookbook over and over again. There were several recipes I tried in the book. One of my favorites is Hachis Parmentier (aka Shepherds Pie). I've cooked that recipe at least 8 times and still enjoy it. Another favorite is Chicken Basquaise which very flavorful. The Leek and Potato soup is excellent especially on a cold winter day. Salmon and Lentils was also great. Another reason I recommend this book is the Bonne Idee sections which provides a twist on the original recipe by adding an extra ingredient. Dorie also explains the story behind each recipe which gives more depth to the cookbook. This cookbook has soul and will be in my kitchen for a very long time.

A great choice for simple delicious French cooking recipes. Greenspan notes that most of these recipes are what our modern French counterparts--busy working people who may be parents too--use on a regular basis. This is not super "special occasion" food, but it most certainly can be used for special occasions! Greenspan is very famous for her pastries and desserts, but I have been so happy with the non-dessert recipes in this book that I wish there were more of them! Often, people find the term "French" in a cookbook title daunting, and as a result, don't even look through the book. Don't make that mistake here! My family and friends are extremely happy that I bought this book AND use it! I make many of the recipes regularly. It's really worth it even if you don't use a lot of seafood, veal, duck, or lamb.

I bought this for my mom for her birthday, and she really loves it. We have been going through the recipes together and really love her writing style. It feels very familiar, like reading letters from a friend, and her little short stories inserted here and there are charming and funny. For the recipes themselves, she has adapted them for an American audience, and so far I haven't run across any ingredients that would be too difficult to find here. They also don't seem too difficult, which is good because my mom and I are beginners and this was my main concern, but she explains everything very well and doesn't make it too complicated. I can also attest for the authenticity of these recipes, because I just came back to the US after living in France for 3 years, and these recipes definitely make me reminiscent!

This is a somewhat useful book written by a lawyer and probably most useful to other lawyers. It is poorly edited and includes a small amount of information made to look bigger than it is with wide margins, large spacing between the lines and a small font. I have spent many years on Wall Street and am almost used to reading the complexity that pervades all US securities law and regs, a complexity that pervades this book.Other crowdfunding books, such as Nathan Rose's "Equity Crowdfunding," will be alot more useful to most business owners who prefer plain English and want to understand the broad range of issues surrounding crowdfunding and executing a successful crowdfunding campaign.

Wow! An incredible amount of information in 150 (+/-) pages! Of course, the type is small...Of researched crowd funding all over the internet and NOTHING comes close to this. This is the resource anyone needs if they are serious about launching a successful crowdfunding project. Buy this book.And it's only fifteen bucks! Are you kidding me?

Being already familiar with Kickstarter as a crowdfunding platform, I learned alot about the differences for real estate investing. All the different rules and codes can seem a little confusing, but that is just the way laws are. But the book is handy because it breaks down each one to quickly digest. One of the best features is that she provides a road map with boxes and steps on what to do to become successful. Also there are some contacts she lists as resources that may prove to be helpful too.

Outstanding Book! Completely filled me in on all of the missing pieces and my perceptions of which regulation fits my businesses agenda. My only regret is that I hadn’t read it sooner!!

We are planning on touring Bellefontaine Cemetery soon. I saw this book mentioned on their website, so glad I did. It is full of the most interesting stories about some of Missouri's most prominent people, especially people from the early days. We will use the book in addition to the website when we tour the cemetery.If you like human interest stories you will enjoy this book.

I was very surprised at some of the things I found in this book! Great reading for a history buff like myself. It's a real education on this subject.

I have been to this cemetery but never had all the intimate details this book provides.

This book is excellent for the history it provides of the St. Louis, Missouri, area through information about important local historical figures and their families who are buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis. It is very well written, interesting, and enjoyable to read.

Got this as a gift for someone, they loved it!

I've tried several self-hypnosis CD's, and I like this one best. It is by far the best technical production, possibly because Mr. Harrold has a background in the music business. Furthermore, he is so likeable. I cannot suppress a smile each time he says, "So, ready now..." I'm also fond of "On no account should you listen whilst driving." Seriously, he takes me into trance very slowly and carefully, with lots of reinforcements. Worth every penny, because I have lost a good deal of weight and this CD has helped me.

I ordered this book and CD set last year and have been very successful in losing weight. The weight seems to just drop off quickly and easily and it has been fun to keep going with the process. I continue to listen every now and again to reinforce the informaiton I learned from the book and CD. I would recommend this set to everyone who is serious about weightloss. It worked wonderfully for me. I have been a big fan of Glenn Harrold's work ever since my first purchase of one of his other CD's. His voice is very soothing and relaxing. His technique works very well for me and I would recommend his work to everyone.

I read this book for motivation. You first have to start with self motivation, but this is a good start.

Really works!

Have been using for about two weeks. You have be to open to relaxation and willing to accept suggestion. I chose to customize the program for me, by loading the cd to an mp3 file, then using an audio program to take segments of the audio out. What I ended up with was a custom audio file that I was then able to run in an endless loop. I did not want it waking me at the end of every 30 minute session. I have two programs from Glenn Harold that I run end to end, then loaded it to an mp3 player and set it to repeat so that as long as I wanted I could use the program... namely at night while sleeping. Normally as one sleeps there are periods of twilight sleep where we are most suggestable. This is how I use it. You are never in a deep trance, and when awake are totally aware of your surounding. When the alarm goes off in the a.m. I wake normally. As far as the program itself goes, it is good. You get used to the british accent after a while, but is a little distracting in the beginning. Have been using my adjust program for two weeks and have lost ten pounds, without exercise or doing anything artificial. I find that I tend to eat a little less and get full faster. Seems I lose patience sitting at the table too long, especialy if there is a lot of food. I wanted to see if the self hypnosis worked on its own merit before adding in an exercise program. My goal is to lose 1 pound a week. I have a lot to lose, but have not been sucessful in the long term with other programs I have tried. Every expert I talked to indicates that the bottom line is that it is all in the head. So, what better way to adjust than to change how I think about food and how I eat. So far so good.

I can't fairly rate the product as the CD that was supposed to be included was missing. I returned the product right away so can't give it a rating. Buyer beware that the CD could be missing if buying from this seller.

I just bought this item. It arrived in a timely fashion. I bought this book from a Amazon seller. I want to loose 90 to 100lbs by August 2013. In 2000, I lost 90lbs on my own, I was very motivated then... In 2005 with alot of stress factors in my life, I began to put back on the weight; an average of 22 lbs a year-and now I am almost back to the weight I was in 2005, after loosing the 90lbs (230lbs). I just don't have the motivation I should, nor do I have the willpower, even though I need to loose the weight for my health and many other reasons. I weight 216lbs and Im 5ft 6inches tall. Starting tonight, I am going to listen to the cd at least once a day, if not twice. I will post my success every month to let you know how much I am loosing. I also ordered the following cd's: over come addictions, exercise motivation, weight loss, and energy and motivational all by Glenn Harrold. I am also going to listen to the other cd's interchangeably. I am determined. I want to achieve this goal within the next twelve months... One of my New year Goals. The reviews on this were very good, so I thought I would give it a try...nothing to loose but the weight. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them.
