I did buy this for a class, and doing the required work was rather time consuming, however, it was also very rewarding and useful. Never again will you wonder when a medical professional throws out some term. Despite knowledge of Latin and/or Greek, this book just drills you on breaking words down when applied to English, as well as some light discussion of semantic shift over time and some other basic linguistic principles, which are sufficient for the layman or classics student, while short enough to not be tedious to someone in linguistics. The examples used are a bit antiquated in the chapter introductions, but as the rest of the lessons deal with antiquated suffixes, prefixes and roots/bases of words, it is rather timeless. I still frequently carry it with me to brush up on what I learned.

First, do note that it is most definitely a textbook. If you just want a book to help you understand the English language, I would read Bill Bryson's Mother Tongue.I had to read this for a course on Latin and Greek roots, and found this book very easy to follow despite not being very familiar with the subject matter. I did feel a few things could have used better explaining (it doesn't explain "doublets" well at all, and there were parts that were quite repetitive), and I think the usefulness of this book really comes down to how the instructor uses it, as well as the workbook. But overall, it was an engaging read, one that gave me a new area of interest beyond my credit requirement.

Twenty plus years ago I took a college class, Greek and Latin Elements in English. I loved the class, kept my class notes and notebook, but the book vanished when I went overseas. I was sad for a long time until I found it on Amazon Prime. I love it! As far as I can tell, it's accurate. I'm not a scholar, but I love knowing more about our language and passing on tidbits to help my children with vocabulary.

I originally checked this book out from my library to use as a textbook for my undergraduate etymology class, but I loved it so much that I had to have my own copy! Each chapter gives you a set of base/root words from Latin and Greek so you can learn them in chunks. However, I will admit that the chapter and index organization is not the clearest for the reader, but it's not half bad once you get used to it.

Not what I thought it was, this book is about English words that have changed or came from other origins... not a strictly translation book... more of a work book in a sence. I was looking for a quick reference book for my nursing classes. This could help but not in the way or time saving way I was looking for.

This was my textbook for my undergrad etymology class, which was probably one of my favorite college classes. I had sold this textbook back after the class ended, but I couldn't stand to part with it! This book divides up Greek and Latin roots into chapters so you can learn a little bit at a time and is fairly comprehensive. This is likely a great gift for the odd word nerd like me. :)

I'm only one chapter in and I already love the book. I know it's meant to teach vocabulary, but I love the history I learned at the start of the book a lot. It is already worth the purchase

Meh. Not a good read. I mean, its an old old text book. Refers to the USSR etc.Just really boring writing.

About the Author

Mary C. Neal is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, former director of spine surgery at the University of Southern California, and a founding partner of the Orthopedic Associates of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She received her medical degree from the School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she also trained in general surgery before completing an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Southern California. She has served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church of Jackson Hole, is a member of the board of directors for several nonprofit organizations, and created the Willie Neal Environmental Awareness Fund (wnealenvirofund.org).

I am a person who struggles with her faith, so I was interested to read this book by Dr. Mary C. Neal, an orthopedic spinal surgeon who lives in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Dr. Neal drowned in a kayaking accident in 1999, but was miraculously brought back to life. She truly believes she went to heaven and met Jesus. She first wrote a book about her experience in 2012, “To Heaven and Back.” As time passed, Dr. Neal felt compelled to share more, including the question asked to her by many: How does knowing heaven is real change our lives on Earth? She answered this question among others in this follow-up book, “Seven Lessons from Heaven: How Dying Taught Me to Live a Joy-Filled Life.”NOTE: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS “SPOILERS”.Seven Lessons from Heaven has two main parts. Part One, which is approximately two-thirds of the book, shares the doctor’s story of drowning, meeting Jesus, and returning to her Earthly body. Throughout these chapters, she shares seven lessons (“life-altering insights”) that she brought back from heaven. They are explained in detail throughout the chapters, and she summarizes them as this:1. Circumstances are seen differently through the lens of heaven.2. Death is not the end.3. I must confess, I was not ready to tackle this assignment myself at the present time, but I may do so eventually.There will be believers of this book, as there will be doubters. Some people may believe this was simply a dream, some will think Dr. Neal is lying, and some will have no doubt she had conversations with Jesus. Everyone is on a unique journey, so no two people will respond the same. As is asked in the book: How much evidence do YOU need? As for whether or not I believe that Dr. Neal went to heaven and back, I honestly do not know. However, I believe that she believes she did, and she feels compelled to share her story. Therefore, I wanted to read it to see what she had to say.I found the book to be an intriguing read. I especially enjoyed the stories the doctor shared of others who had similar stories/miracles. Although it was interesting, I felt at times the story could have been more condensed. Would recommend, especially to those who are struggling with their own faith journey.

As I was watching the news, I caught a brief snippet about the author and her story which, thanks to God, captured my attention. I have since read both her books and have taken her lessons to heart. No reason to read both books......stick with the 7 Lessons. Have many of my family and friends reading the Lessons. If u are looking for an opportunity to "find God", highly recommend u begin with the 7 Lessons.

I have read Mary's previous book as well as 7 Lessons from Heaven. This most recent book is so much more powerful. Her story is told with more detail and passion. As a primary care physician, I have the privileged of listening to life changing stories every day. I pretty much only consider personal change if it is attached to a story. Sometimes an individual can change me too by sharing their experience of trauma or challenge. Mary's story can do that for her reader. I don't think her readers will be bored hearing the story of her kayak accident and the story of her child dying. The maturity she gained as an author between her two books will be a treat to those of you who read her first book. After retelling her stories and sharing those of many other people, she goes on in give us a step by step guide for spiritual growth. This book helps us to know, in a specific sense, ways to use our pain or even regular daily experiences to get to faith, gratitude, and being of service. By sharing her story, she shows us it is possible.I read some of the few negative reviews of this book and wondered if I read the same book. I didn't find it to be preachy or elitist in any way. I think the book is approachable to those who have a traditional Bible based faith and well as to those who do not. She shares her spiritual and physical experiences and leaves her reader to opt in or out.Reading this book called me on to spiritual and personal growth. I think it will for you too if you choose to let it.

Great book. Love the opening chapter quotes. Nice approach to the topic. Something for everyone. Story seeker. Analytical. Need for science. If you don't need all the feel good part, which was the best part to me, skip to chapter 13. Ordered Kindle edition. Wish I would have purchased the book in print. Will have to purchase again. Interested in study outline at the end, but too cumbersome to flip back and forth in Kindle. Thank you doctor for having the courage to share your story. I can imagine what a big risk sharing your experience felt like in the natural. Hopefully more seekers will have the courage to read this enjoyable, well written book. I'm especially grateful for the passages concerning drowning. It eases my pain to know that drowning isn't the horrible experience we imagine and that we are never alone. My feelings of not deserving His goodness; or being afraid to completely trust has kept me from totally resting in Him. This book has made a big difference in my journey with The Lord. I have been convinced by the author that I have held Him at arms length believing that I can’t be close because I am a disappointment to Him. The content of the book is good, but there are biases from the author against the "dominant culture." It is easy to follow and good for diversity. My only qualms is how biased the author is against others.

Textbook is in excellent condition. The content among chapters is very repetitive and dry when relating to different cultures.

Have to say, the anecdotes seem outdated and somewhat stereotypical/discriminatory in nature. Ironic, no? Oh, well... got through the course and my master's... but cringed through these readings.

This book does not provide a comprehensive analysis of multicultural issues. Many social groups are left out and important diversity factors are not addressed. If you're looking for a quality textbook about diversity, I would look elsewhere.

Wish it had a glossary in the back. Kinda hard for tests for classes when you cannot find the word you are looking for.

I have read many books and watched many tennis videos about how to play doubles. I have been playing tennis for a long time and although my shots are good, I kept feeling like I was missing something. Match after match I would lose and could not get my confidence up. People would tell me it was my lack of confidence that was impeding my success. Although I knew that they were right ,I still felt like there was something I was not getting about the game of doubles. Until I knew what it was, there was no way I was going to believe in myself. Being on the court was confusing and I was always in self-defense mode, waiting for the other team to either hit a winning shot or make a mistake. Finally, I found this book. I read it once through the night before a club round robin. The book is short and the concepts are clearly written so it's pretty simple. I played better than I had ever played in my life at the round robin. My whole attitude changed. I was no longer wishing the other team would lose to me. I actually thought about ways to beat them and was able to carry it through. I highly recommend this book to people who have to know the who, what, where and how of doubles play. You can work on your shots til the cows come home but you can't build your confidence if you don't really understand how you are supposed to play the game. This book is a gem. I plan to read it over and over again!

I am an intermediate recreational player. This is a quick read to improve your game. Although I was already using some of the strategies, it helped to understand the logic behind some of the instructions I had received from different pros in the past. He gives easy to understand instructions, and I have had better success in net play and poaching by implementing his tips.

I'm a singles player trying to become a better doubles player and have been playing on and off for over 60 years. I bought this book for a holiday tennis party. The reviews were so good that I bought one for myself. So glad I did. Each chapter is brief with one basic instruction to concentrate on. The instruction is clear and aided by diagrams. Each lesson builds on the previous lesson. The author is an excellent instructor.

Logical guidance on how to win at doubles. The concept of winning with three shots is a critical crux to the author's point and system and the drills offer practical ways of putting the concepts to use outside of match play.

Steve Tourdo has done a great job of breaking down the components of what it takes to be successful in doubles in an easy to understand manner. If you follow this doubles system, you will be a very sought after partner. This is a great book for players of all levels who desire to become a more successful doubles player.

It is a "totalitarian-tolerance...masquerading as a new freedom." But these ideas are not just around us, they are also found seeping into many of our churches. Consequently, Tinker shows us how this subversion is not only changing the way we can even talk about such things in public discourse, but discloses the fact that it is seeping into the most important aspect of our society, namely, our families.What are we to do? How are we to strengthen our families, our communities, and our institutions where speech and religion is free, civil discourse can be consistently cherished and practiced, and people are not misled into buying into what Francis Schaeffer and Nancy Pearcey describe as these dehumanizing secular/sacred divide and fact/value splits? In other words, how can we truly challenge the "hideous strength" that is before us?First, Tinker reminds us that "God subverts our attempts to subvert, his great reality will win out." Second, we are to commend God's truth. Third, we must theologically be centered in and on Christ. Tinker writes, "In the Lord Jesus Christ, creation has a telos, a goal and end point, and so contrary to the assertions of the postmodernists, there is an overarching story, a metanarrative." Fourth, we are to engage culture. How? To be sure, we are not to isolate ourselves from the world or adapt ourselves to the world. Instead, we are to consistently live out a courageous refusal that exemplifies Christ, a resistance thinking (relevance with faithfulness), a joyful endurance. Following in the footsteps of Christ, practiced by heroes of the faith like William Wilberforce, we are to proclaim the gospel AND courageously engage, thoughtfully and accurately analyze, and contend for truth in love and love in truth in our spheres of influence. Of course, the cultivation of Christ-like virtues are necessary; we have to rise above poisonous tactics, loose tongues, and moral compromise. Further, like Wilberforce demonstrated in his constant efforts to abolish slavery, real change for the better is possible. Lastly, our local churches are to be a faithful embodiment to Christ, a praying people, a literate leadership, and a living out of what it means be united to Christ and to each other (union and communion).Tinker's work is most excellent. If you are a fan of C. S. Lewis, then you will most certainly appreciate Tinker's analysis and keen insight! It is most difficult to offer a sweeping account of what we are, what we are experiencing, and where we are going. Many such efforts are reductionistic or convoluted or too simplistic to take seriously or too complicated to understand. Perhaps well-meaning, their projects are short-lived and unsuccessful. But Tinker offers something that is different; he goes to the heart of the matter! I was richly informed, awakened to some things I've not considered, and inspired to go beyond what is comfortable, and engage my local community and the greater society in a way that brings God the most glory; too much is at stake! As Tolkien reminded us in his fictional work, Lord of the Rings, one hobbit can make a life-giving difference! God uses what society dismisses as insignificant to make a life-giving difference! Real change is possible!In closing, God's truth, which corresponds to how things actually are, generates values we need the most, and speaks to the whole of our humanity. God's truth lifts our humanity while recognizing our depravity, our frailties, and our possibilities. Flowing from His foundation, we are able to love the unlovely, offer real hope, and create culture that ennobles our society, not degenerate or spoil what is true, good, and beautiful. Why? Since God's truth flows from Him who is infinite and personal (our starting point), we have "true truth" that possesses explanatory power in contrast to other worldviews like Marxism which starts from ourselves and is finite in source, strength, and values, generates false hopes, and consequently, dehumanizes us as history records. But the "true truth" that God offers, engenders real and ultimate meaning, purpose, and significance; His truth offers existential relevance that truly addresses what it means to be human. Moreover, God's truth is logically consistent, empirically adequate, workable, viable, and posits a solid and logically consistent ontological foundation for moral values, duties, and accountability. Thus, like Schaeffer reminds us in God Who is There, "Non-Christian presuppositions simply do not fit into what God has made, including what man is. This being so, every man is in a place of tension. Man cannot make his own universe & then live in it.”

There is plenty of good content in this book with regard to the underlying dangers of the secular world we find ourselves in. Unfortunately, this book is short on solutions. It reads more like a series of blog posts, sloppily written and unedited, without a unified argument. It’s commentary on political correctness and social justice was pretty facile, and lacked the complexity of the actual scene in today’s church. Because of the superficiality of the arguments, the solutions are made to match. While his conclusion that we need a praying church who knows the Bible and is willing to speak up is good, this book presents nothing especially helpful or new to today’s conversation. Unfortunately I’d have to say it is a good idea that was executed in a middling manner.

This is a very interesting book, written by Tiziano Terzani, a remarkable man - an Italian journalist working as a war correspondent for Reuter, who spent most of his life in S-E Asia and decided to heed the warning of a fortune-teller and avoid flying during a certain year ... The story of how he managed to travel throughout Asia with other means (quite difficult, given his profession), and the people he met, especially the fortune-tellers he met and consulted in the different places, now mostly as a matter of journalistic curiosity and to see to what extent their predictions coincided ... A wonderful book! I wish another one of his were translated and available, I have it in Italian, "Un altro giro di giostra" (A last turn on the merry-go-round), about his search for alternative cures for his cancer while having the usual treatment at Sloan-Kettering in NY also. There are some interviews with him close to the end of his life on youTube, worth watching - a luminous person.

We absolutely love this author, we also read his book in which he goes on a journey to find a possible ancient / holistic cure for cancer. Sadly he was not successful. Tiziano Terzani was such a wonderful writer, he is sorely missed on our bookshelves but also as a human being, we surely would be friends if he was still alive today. A man with heart and a wonderful way of writing. We would be most happy to receive any suggestions about his writings in German or English.shipping: thank you this book arrived in good shape, the packaging left the corners a little bit in danger of getting bumped, but for us this second hand book purchase was all about the content not the cover of the book. Inside is what counts.We would buy from the seller again.

I cannot express in mere words what this book has done to me. I am about 2/3 through it and really do not want the journey to end. It's not so much the fortune telling but Tiziano's perspective of people and his sorrow over the loss of traditions that are being replaced by "modernization," or Westernization. And what a shame, as he states in the book, losing these ways is like removing a page or chapter from the book of human knowledge, gone forever. He shows through the many shamans he meets, the rulers, the "common" people (like you and me), how these traditions are "weathering" as the West collides into the East, and it's not faring well. Those he meets are still practicing the ways of the earth, they still know our place in this world, this life, and how we fit within it rather than reign superiority over it, but many are dying off and their descendents are taken by westernization and are not interested in carrying on these traditions. The west has lost its ability to perform magic if you will, instead we cure illnesses with drugs that make companies rich rather than through meditation, herbal remedies, spiritual manipulation, knowledge we all once knew. And here in Asia, and in Africa, through the native people of the Americas, Australia, etc. where our old ways are still being practiced, we still have something we could take and bring back if we'd just recognize its value, a real treasure we are so fortunate to still have and one we must grasp before it is too late!One reviewer here mentioned how all of the fortune tellers the author met predicted that he would live a long life, often stating he'd live well into his eighties, but he died a few years ago at the age of 65 from a brain tumor.This is not the first time I've heard fortune tellers predict long lives only to be proved wrong when their subjects die much younger. I had a friend who visited a fortune teller for his 25th birthday. She was extremely accurate about his past and present as well as what she believed would be his future, much of which he had planned but never told her. She told him he would have a very long career in politics. My friend was killed in a car accident while riding in a taxi only 2 months later. Another friend told me while stationed in Haiti many years ago that he had his fortune told with a few of his army buddies. The fortune teller told everyone's fortune but when she got to one of the men, she refused to tell his fortune. He was killed a week later.I don't know, perhaps it's all bunk or perhaps there are folks who can truly see into the future. It's just that maybe they see the future, but not all of them want to tell the truth about when that person will die. Why tell someone they will die young when you can give them hope that they will die old?Tiziano does not have a specific perspective, he's open minded, but he pines for the old ways that he sees were more human, and contrary to what others have written here, he never states he either supports or opposes communism, he simply observes, loves individuals and people, wishes for the days when we could all be connected to the earth again, and each other in a spiritual way, and not for business. And he's open to all possibilities when it comes to spirituality, true spirituality, not the kind that too often is used to control people. He does not dismiss these religions outright, he only notices they always seem to appear as either a way to westernize a country (Christianity) or fight against that westernization (Islam), like polar opposites, but no real balance or the recognition of a people's true will.Whatever your perspective, open your mind and take a wonderful journey with this man. You'll long for a time you may know or remember, or have heard of but wish you could experience too, a time that even existed here in the US for a spell.

I really enjoyed this book and was hooked from early on. I had no expectations as it was given to me as a gift, and was very pleasantly surprised. It's an unusual premise, insightful and very readable. It is written with warmth and humor. I now gift this book to friends, a diverse group, and trust their candid opinions that they have enjoyed it too. Once for the bookshelf for sure.

i would reccommend this book to anyone who enjoys travel narrative and is interested in magic and fortune tellers in asia. Although i can't agree with the author on all his opinions, as he seems to be against the modernization of Asia, i do agree that with the modernization there is a great loss of knowledge of nature. The author seems to have a love/hate thing going with china, doesn't seem to keen on thailand, and seems sad at the loss of how burma used to be. The book is well written and gives some great anecdotal history of asia, as well as illustrates, in part, the difference in the asian mindset when it comes to fortune tellers and magic.

This is the second time I read this book. His is an excellent writer telling us much more than his journey chasing fortunetellers around the world. We learned a lot about Asian history and its culture. Great sens of humour and his humility make this book a great read

I tried to read the whole book in one night but that is not a good tribute to the writer! It is an amazing story. This year I spent a month on Bali and was looking for a fortune teller....there where quit a view but ....... actualy I did not dare going there. Instead of that visit I did a cooking class. At the end we talked a little bit about life etc,, when we said goodbey he warned to look after my hip on the right side.......he was right......he was a fotune teller aswell!

Mystical and entertaining, also informative about the South-East Asian regions well described by the author. Very worth reading, dive into another world!
