Add the egg yolks, one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Sift the flour, cornmeal, and salt over the mixture and stir just until the dough comes together. Gently boil until reduced to 1 1/2 cups, about 15 minutes. Stir in the pears and cook over medium heat until tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Strain the pears; discard the cloves, lemon peel, and cooking liquid. Cool to room temperature. Shaping. Cut the dough in half and return half to the refrigerator. This is a very delicate dough. Lightly sprinkle flour on your work surface and then lay one or two pieces of plastic wrap on it. Put the dough on the plastic wrap and cover it with a second layer of plastic wrap. This protects the dough as you roll it with your rolling pin into a circle 1/4 inch thick. Butter ?an 8 1/2-inch tart pan very thoroughly. Remove the top layer of plastic, gently lift the dough up by the bottom piece of plastic wrap, and then carefully invert it into the prepared pan before removing the remaining plastic wrap. Trim the edge. Build up the edge of the bottom pastry with the trimmings rolled into one or two coils and flattened onto the edge, so that the edge is substantial enough for the top pastry to be attached. Filling and Top Crust. I sometimes sprinkle a very little cornmeal or cookie or cake crumbs on the bottom of the tart shell to soak up the juices from the pears. Spoon the drained pears into the tart shell. Again using plastic wrap, roll out the remaining dough into a 1/4-inch-thick circle and place over the pan. Trim the overhanging dough, press the two edges together, and crimp decoratively. Lightly brush the pastry with the beaten egg. Baking. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Bake until golden, 40 minutes. Cool on a rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.

I bought the original edition shortly after it appeared in 1985, and until relatively recently it was my go-to book for both breads and sweets. Field introduced me and a lot of folks to high-hydration (wet!) doughs, to extended fermentation, and to a much wider range of possible breads. And while her tarts/cakes are less radical, I have found them well-adapted for home baking: reliable, tasty, and less fussy then their French counterparts.If you already have the old edition: go to the "Fresh Loaf" site and find a thread called "The Italian Baker, Revised" for a good discussion of what has changed. The bottom line is not much. The key upgrade for me is that metric weights have been added to all recipes -- much easier to work with and scale up and down. But if you already have the old edition and don't need recipes in grams, I don't think there's much reason to upgrade.If you're looking for your very first bread book: _The Italian Baker_ was a revelation in 1985, and it's still very good, but some of the new crop are even better. I would now suggest Reinhart's _Bread Baker's Apprentice_ as a first book, and if you don't mind a little geekiness I really like Hamelman's _Bread_. These books take you through a greater variety of types of bread in greater depth and detail.Why you still want _The Italian Baker_ on your shelf: it has a range of rustic breads, veg and herb breads, and sweet and festive breads that you won't find elsewhere. You'll find panettone recipes here and there, but I can't think of another book that is as thorough and helpful on festive Italian baking. Folks still remember the chocolate bread from this book that I made them 20 years ago. When I want something for a special occasion this is absolutely the first book I open. And if you just want to make the occasional nice loaf of bread, but are not ready to acquire a new hobby/obsession/fanaticism, you might find this book is written for you!

When I scan books on Amazon, it seems I always read the bad reviews first, the one star reviews. So did I when I came across this one. Perhaps, I think, the detractors 'get' something that those more affirmative do not. Reading the reviews here, I was struck that they missed something perhaps, of the essence of making bread, and so ordered the book. I was not disappointed. I have made bread all my life, and was looking for a new text, authored by a kindred spirit. Ms. Field's book does not disappoint. You see, bread is not cooking. It is alchemy. Elemental components - flour, salt, water, yeast, mixed in a secret way, to make something simple yet complex, easy yet hard. Did you ever wonder why one can take these same four ingredients, and make something that is either sublime or grotesque, and that each tastes a little different? Ms. Field writes a book that is captivating yet practical; she shares her secrets, the wizard of bread, in a way that is on one hand practical, and on the other magical - her text is as compelling (moreso!!) than the recipes. Bread is historical. Bread is spiritual. Bread is love. It is no accident that Christ broke bread with his disciples. This is my body. This is my food. This is my love for those with whom I break it.The book is in two halves. Let's say that the first is spiritual. What are the ingredients, how do they differ, how does one handle them, how are they combined, what is the history of each, what is the mythology of each? Do you want to make the perfect loaf? Learn the mythology before you measure out a cup of flower. The second half of the book is recipes. The recipes of bread all seem stereotyped: this much flour, this much yeast, this much water, etc., etc. Ms Field elaborates the subtleties of them all. I have made about half a dozen so far and all have been wonderful. Yet I think perhaps it is because I read the first half of the book before I started. You see, you need both. The right amount of flour, and the love in your hands. Read the first half, then use the recipe from whatever book you want. I am sure that the effort will be rewarded.One of my fondest memories is of my grandmother cooking dinner. I remember her kneading bread, as I came as a small child to her apartment after church. She sang in Italian as she worked on the loaf. Later, over dinner, the warm loaves were served alongside our pasta or roast. I remember her sitting quietly as we rolled our eyes in ecstasy, and consumed her labors. Now, after a lifetime of pursuing perfection in a mixture of baked wheat, water, salt and yeast, know what she was thinking; I have given this up for you.If you want recipes go elsewhere. If you want a spiritual experience, I heartily recommend this book.

You will be amazed when you make Pane di Como. My Nissan sales manager trades me vension for bread I make from the recipes in this book. Directions are clear, measurements are precise, spelled out for hand, food processor, or stand mixer. Pretty much fool proof.

I am a huge fan of audio books with great stories and great readers. I love this dramatization of the Jane Austen novels. As they are dramatizations, they are not her writings verbatim. The recordings and characters are well done. The only thing I don't like is the packaging of the CDs. They are all on one post and my post actually arrived broken. The entertainment and listening pleasure exceeds this small inconvenience.

A great way to get the complete collection of Jane Austen's work. Even if you've read the works, this is a joy to listen to and is a great aid for those who don't like reading or who might struggle with comprehension. And again, you'll find may familiar voices and talents.

Really good actors and staging. Love it! Great stories and it's long, so lots of content to enjoy.

Any Jane Austen fan would love this collection. A single box holds all the discs for the dramatization of Austen's six novels. Because the most likely person to purchase this collection is a Janeite, I'll spare any description of the stories and focus the review on the quality instead. The dramatizations are enjoyable. For anyone who would like an entertaining, light-hearted commute, pop these discs in. They're great to fall asleep to as well. The only minor complaint I have is that the box is not particularly practical. It holds all the discs in one singular stem. So in order to pick the novel you want to listen to, you have to pull out all the discs that sit on top of it. It's not convenient to have to do that. If this doesn't bother you, then there really isn't a downside to purchasing this.

Really well done. Fabulous actors narrating. Can't wait to drive! I've given two as gifts because I liked mine so much.

This is a fabulous resource for those who love Jane Austen's books! I have greatly enjoyed listening to these dramatizations of her books! I would HIGHLY recommend this! And the discs/box came in excellent, brand-new condition.

Love listening to my favorite stories in the car. The narrating and actors are superb.

Excepting Pride and Prejudice (which is a shame, because it's my favorite) I loved the dramatization. I think Mansfield Park was my favorite.

1st, let me just tell you that Samuel Kaufman was my OB/GYN from 1992 until 2017 and I only stopped seeing him because I moved out of state. This man is the real deal. Very kind, gentle and has a great sense of humor. I was very lucky to have him and Dr. Rudolph "Jane", be the 2 Dr's in charge of my care during my pregnancy and subsequent birth. If I had had 20 children, I would have wanted him as my OB.I know he is published in medical journals, but writing a book is a much different audience and I think he did a great job. This is pretty much the book I've been looking for on SDR basic technology and operation. There is a lot of useful information packed between the covers. It doesn't get bogged down with theory or math, but is written more towards practical use. I'd recommend this book to anyone starting out exploring the world of SDR and new technology radio.

Well written in layman terms. Finally, a book that covers many manufactures SDR radios. If you are looking to buy a software defined radio, this book will help you to determine the best radio for you. If you already have a SDR radio, this book will help you to get the most out of your radio. The book has a large section on the Apache Labs SDR's, covering all modes of opeation, the setup and settings of the author's radio. I highly recommend the book.

A good introduction to SDR and how it works. Also, a good reference book. Not all chapters are applicable to everyone but you can pick and choose the subjects you are interested in or just want to know more about. Highly recommend if you’re new to SDR or are merely interested in the topic.

The book is a well written and complete survey of software defined radio. The author was thorough without being pedantic, with just enough theory to elicit understanding and hold interest. It worked for me because I purchased an SDR after reading the book.

THE RISE OF DARTH VADER by James Lucerno.This novel is set immediately after the events of Episode III Revenge of the Sith and from the outset to me it is a pity that Matthew Stover did not write both books. I say this because reading the novelisation of REVENGE OF THE SITH was one of the literary highlights of 2012 and it would have enhanced this story by the length of the Kessel run if it was written in the same style. In one sense the story of Anakin Skywalker ends on Mustafar and yet George Lucas himself has said that episodes 1 through 6 complete the story of his rise fall and eventual redemption (if such a thing is possible). So what I am saying from the outset is that the novelisation of ROTS and this one is really a two part story which would have been a better read if written by the same author.(NOTE: I have come to realise that ROTS and this book are actually the final two thirds of THE DARK LORD TRILOGY so this criticism is clearly invalid. But I would like to leave this in my review as I refer to this paragraph later on. :-))That out of the way, I can say that there are moments of pure star wars magic to be found in this book. This first one left me breathless early on in the novel when we entered the tormented mind of Vader as he begins to comprehend what has happened, what he is and what he has become. Regrets begin to form in his soul and rise to the surface of his consciousness when he remembers what he was and what he could have been. Little facts are raised in the book which are fascinating to some readers (me!) but possibly pointless trivia to others.Part one of the book is compelling to say the least. We are on Murkhana when Order 66 is implemented and this is a well written but terrifying description of the mass murder of innocents under the guise of war. Part two - subtitled THE EMPEROR'S EMISSARY is when we are introduced to Vader for the first time in the book and this is where the heart of the reader really starts to pump. The story itself too jumps up a notch but in an attempt to humanise Vader it gets stuck in first gear for 50 pages or so. Anyway the heroes of this story become obvious given the context of what has gone before and it is easy to become attached emotionally to what is going on.Part three begins on Imperial Centre and obviously is used to set the scene for what happens in the tumultuous and apocalyptic (for some) climax to this tale. Palpatine (Sidious) is still manipulating his new apprentice but at least we signs of development and independent thought processes begin to rise from Vader. Part four is based on KASHYYYK and is the highlight of the book in an emotional sense as well as from the storytelling perspective. A group of renegade Jedi and their support crew decide to use Kashyyyk as a temporary base and when Vader turns up with his support crew they refuse to surrender. A fantastic battle ensues with lots of action, fight scenes and truly moving events and dialogue to entertain and educate the reader. This part of the book is also significant in terms of Vader's development in the dark side and it is easy to close your eyes and see the book "happen" in front of you as you read each page.With a deeply satisfying and equally emotional ending this book turned out to be one of the all time great EU novels. As I stated at the start of my review, the writing style is definitely different from that used by Stover in REVENGE OF THE SITH but looking back, that was definitely a good thing. I am not criticising Stover by saying this but even though the two books form the bulk of the same trilogy, they have to be sufficiently different in order to entertain and to give each writer his due. What Lucerno has achieved here is a classic star wars novel for the "new" star wars if you know what i mean. So in summary I give this book four stars out of five. The ending was awesome as I have said but held back by a minor lull in proceedings in part two. But definitely worth reading. The hard part now is to decide which SW book to read next!Greggorio (LR)

I thought this boil did a great job getting into the inner mind of Vader and begin to explain and show how powerful he is! A must read for any Vader fan.

Really great read. Darth Vader fans will appreciate the detailed looks into Anakin and Vader's mindset, the deep thoughts and inner battle he has within himself. However I do feel that Vader us often pulled out of the spotlight and seems as he's playing second seat to the other characters in this book. You'll like the characters for the most part, (at least I did) but crave more Vader, like any star wars fan would

This was the first book I had read from James Luceno. I picked it up instead of moving on to the next set of books in the New Jedi Order which he also wrote. I was very impressed. His writing style is familiar and expected, a good thing in my opinion, and the story was well thought out even if the main hero, if there was one, wasn't very well defined. This is definitely about Vader and anything beyond him felt a bit like filler but necessary filler and definitely didn't detract from the story. Throwing in a few characters from the movies, besides Vader, was a nice idea but don't expect their story lines to really be fleshed out here. All in all I am glad I picked this book up and enjoyed the story. I'm feeling better about continuing the New Jedi Order series knowing what to expect from Luceno now and am looking forward to reading his others as well. One issue for me, and this is not the author's fault, I started playing Star Wars: The Force Unleashed right after I finished reading Dark Lord and the origin story of the main character steps all over Vader's visit to a certain planet in this book. Someone at Lucas dropped the ball.

It was good and I enjoyed it greatly, reading through it in 3 days. However my only complaint about it is it did not spend nearly enough time going through Vader's perspective in my opinion. It could have spent more time exploring Anakin's mental transformation into Darth Vader.

Some people didn't feel that this book focused enough on Darth Vader and it is true that he is not the primary focus, despite the title. It does include some pretty cool new characters like Roan Shryne and Olee Starstone.I'm just going to give a brief word as other reviewers have thoroughly discussed it. The book picks up right before Order 66 is given, when Shryne and a group of Clones were on a raid. The order is given and Shryne escapes. In the mean time, you get a look at how Vader is dealing with his injuries and his new bionics. There is a lot of action and an all out great adventure.I highly recommend, if you haven't already, picking up Star Wars, Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (which was much better than the movie) and Labyrinth of Evil (Star Wars, Episode III Prequel Novel).

I really love this book! It takes place right after Revenge of the Sith. Darth Vader is still struggling with the loss of Padme and getting used to his new suit. We also get to meet a few Jedi who still living after Order 66. It is very well written and I love getting to hear Vader's thoughts. I recommend this book to any Star Wars fan.

This is a perfect sequel to Episode III. I have read some of the other reviews stating that people were disappointed that Darth Vader is not mentioned early on in the book. So what! When he does arrive, it just makes it even more worthwhile to read.I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. After just finishing Star Wars: Darth Plagueis, this was a perfect book to start. Both books are by Lucerno, who by the way, should write ALL Star Wars expanded universe books from now on. He just gets the way the books should be.The only problem with this book is that, after I finished reading it, I am sort of lost on what SW book I should get next. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am looking to continue where this book left off.

Chief Terry's use of that word - canoodling- and Landon's response were priceless!This was another fun read starring the Winchesters - with the addition of Aunt Willa and Rosemary - a 2nd cousin to Bay, Clove and Thistle. They've come to the Overlook but no one knows for sure why or what they are really up to. Winnie, Twila and Marnie are trying their best to be nice to Aunt Willa and Rosemary and to keep Aunt Tillie from causing problems - neither of which is an easy task.Along with all that craziness, a young man is found stabbed to death. Landon and Chief Terry are on the case and include Bay - hoping she can get some answers using her magical power - being able to see and talk to ghosts.The banter between the cousins, their Moms and Aunt Tillie are snarky, sarcastic and for the most part funny with some occasional laugh out loud moments. The guests at the inn think it's dinner theater and have a grand time. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

This series has been a very fun read. However, this is my least favorite so far. The story had great potential. Most of the story was actually pretty good. What is killing it for me is the lack of growth in the main character and the decline in substance of her love interest. The plot line of the story was great. The interaction between the two main characters in this installment was totally phoned in. They said and did the same thing over and over again all the way through the book. These characters have been great up to this point. Please allow them to continue to grow and get some depth. Especially Landon. He went from someone I thought was very interesting to a 2 dimensional, egotistical, nose tweaking, horny, adolescent. Bay isn't much better in this book. I can't imagine her letting him continue to behave in such a way without telling him off or at least questioning her attraction to him. Nose tweaking once is a little cute. By the third time I would be cursing him and I am not a witch. I will likely give the next book a go in hopes of improvement. If the characters don't grow and get a bit more depth, it will be time for me to move on.EDIT - After reading the reviews for the next in the series it looks as if it has the same problems. Time to find something new.

Aunt Tillie's sister Willa and her granddaughter Rosemary arrive for a ten day visit as paying guests. All the Winchester's dislike or hate both Wills and Rosemary, who are both mean and horrible to everyone they meet. Nathaniel is a local kid who is attending college and back for the summer. Nathaniel is murdered and his body is dumped in the water at Hollow Creek, the local teenagers partying place. A pot field is found and the field is burned to the ground. A lot of people are trying to find Aunt Tillie's pot field, with no luck. It seems Willa is tight lipped about why she is in town and Aunt Tillie is ready to take her out. Lots of suspects, and some harlious hijinks are occurring and the Winchester females are on look out for trouble. A fun and fast read.

4 Stars... The Winchester witches are up to their mischief when an unwanted family member comes to town and appears to be up to no good... With Tillie in tow the shenanigans are sure to be catastrophic... In the meantime, a teenager is murdered and drugs appear to be involved... With Bay and Landon on the case, what could go wrong???... I once again loved spending time with these fabulous characters and all their banter and wit; we get to see the Winchester women start to come into their own in all of their relationships...Another fun and crazy read with this fantastical family.:)

Life is a Witch was a good and entertaining reading experience but I didn't want it too end. 279 pages was entirely too short! As you can probably tell this is one of my Favorite Series. The plot is original and interesting, the characters are delightful even the villains.. The writing is good with few, if any, editing errors or typos. This series which about a family of female witches and their attempts to navigate their witchy, as well as, mundane, day to day adventures isn't complex or profound but it is a wonderful, imaginative and humorous paranormal cozy mystery. I can hardly wait for the release of the next full length book. I just hope it will be longer than this one.Nevertheless, there are a couple of things that I don't like. I've never found it funny but in this book I found it particularly irritating. That is, the fact that Aunt Tillie tells a very young and impressionable child like Annie very negative and completely inappropriate things about men in general, flat out tells lies about Landon that could alienate the child from him, unkind things about other adult family members and other inaccurate "Tillieisms." It just not funny! Moreover, I've often found it quite irritating throughout the Series but in this book Winnie's overbearing attempts to control other adults, especially her 26 year old daughter, really, relay grates my nerves. In this instance, she creates a major problem then attempts to bully those around her into assist her through the manner in which she dictates. Really!! Then she becomes irritate when Bay makes other plans. I think all 3 of the Winchester mothers need to get a life so they can stop trying to run their daughters. Family loyalty, bonds and love are one things but sometimes the dynamics in this family runs to the absurd, unhealthy and ridiculous. For me, this is frequently just not humorous. I often wonder whether Bay and her cousins will ever marry and live on their own with their husbands or will they expect their husbands to move into the Overlook with them. We see how well that worked out for each of their mothers.Any Whoo! This was still another entertaining installment and I recommend it. It does not end in a cliffhanger none of the books do. However, I don't think that it would make a good stand alone read. I'd advise reading all, or at least some of the other books in the Series first. Buy it, Read and Enjoy!!
