About the Author

Roger Price and LeonardStern created Mad Libs in the 1950s and the series has been a favorite among kids of all ages ever since. Although Roger Price passed away in 1990, Leonard Stern keeps the tradition alive by writing new Mad Libs all the time. Roger Price and Leonard Stern are both well known for their comedywriting. In the 1950s Roger Price created and developed cartoons called Droodles, which were turned into a television show. Before that Price worked with Bob Hope on a newspaper humor column, and he even appeared on Broadway in Tickets, Please! Leonard Stern has an equally colorful and varied history. Before co-founding Price Stern Sloan with Roger Price (Sloan came later), Stern was a successful television writer. In addition to his creative involvement with over twenty television series and over ten motion pictures, Stern worked with Jackie Gleason in New York writing the Honeymooners. He also wrote for the Phil Silvers Show, The Steve Allen Show, and wrote and produced the original Get Smart television series. Recently, Stern published A Martian Wouldn't Say That, which compiled weird and wacky memos written by people in the entertainment industry.Currently, Stern serves as a senior vice president of Price Stern Sloan, where he still writes those hilarious Mad Libs.copyright © 2000 by Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers. Perfect for our car trip across country. Nobody is ever too old for Mad Libs! This is a fun, silly way to have a few giggles with the people in your life.

What I wish I would have known when I ordered this-- this is not a small stocking-stuffer size. This is huge tablet, about 8x10. So I wasn't able to use them in a stocking like I intended, but these have been highly enjoyable. We do them as a family and they always get laughs. My 8-year-old said when he saw me reviewing this, "Oh! Mad Libs! Give that five stars. That's the best, funniest book we have."

Wow! I can't believe what a great deal this book is! SO many Mad Libs for the price, with such a huge variety. I've played these with my daughter, her friends, my husband, and even my elementary school students (grades 2-6). All of them LOVE it.P.S. For teachers: I still maintain that Mad Libs are the best way to teach -- or, at least, reinforce -- knowledge of parts of speech. So much more fun, in-context, and relevant-seeming than worksheets. One or two sessions with these, and my kids understand verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc. like they never had before.

You may have seen the viral videos going around with Mad Libs. You and your friends fill them out, while they hold water in their mouths when you read them out loud. Whoever ends up spitting out the most water, loses!I chose this exact book for this game. It was easily the best of them. My copy arrived in perfect condition. It is paperback with tons of pages. No matter how fast I go through them, I can't imagine finishing it anytime soon. This one will last you for ages!It is absolutely PACKED with Mad Libs that never get old. My friends were laughing so hard that we've decided to make this a weekly ritual. Any age group would have fun with this. It's hard not to! Playing with children, your parents, your friends, anyone. It is a great ice breaker with new people.

I didn't realize this book was so big when I ordered it. I was pleasantly surprised to see so many options for our trips. I got our family hooked on Mad Libs when my husband and I surprised them one morning with a trip out west to see the desert and mountains. We did several Mad Libs on the air plane and while we waited for things like the rental car and such. Such a great alternative to all the electronic gadgets these days. There were several inside jokes that were formed from Mad Lib stories and at random times our children will spout off a line from them that makes us all stop and laugh. All of our children were involved, even if they hadn't originally planned to be, and offered words and suggestions. We each took turns being the narrator and I am not sure if that was more fun than offering the words. Our six year old got a good grasp on the types of words and quickly learned what nouns, adjectives, and verbs were. We are planning a 5,000 mile road trip this summer and I am already collecting more Mad Libs books to take with us. Can't wait for all the laughs!

I loved these as a kid - my brother, sister, friends and I would spend hours "playing" MAD LIBS, all the while not realizing that we were learning grammar!!!!! What a concept - learning made fun! Until we learned the difference between nouns, pro-nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc. we would simply look up the definition (with examples) of each in the front of the book. Oh, and it also helps with reading out load in front of others! Each person gets the opportunity to read the story with the "plugged-in" words, all the while laughing at the silliness of the story. So it's a great way to practice reading out loud in front of others without the anxiety of having to do so.I picked this and a few other MAD LIBS books to play with the family (including my 7 year old niece) during our Christmas visit. It's still a lot of fun to see what silly, grammatically correct sentences are created when filling in the blanks. MAD LIBS certainly stands the test of time!

I have such fond memories of doing Mad Libs when I was a kid. So, as a mom, I was excited to get this to share with my kids. They and their cousins have so much fun completing stories with each other and laughing as they share the ridiculous lines they create. Some of us adults get into the fun, too. Best of all, for the younger ones who are still learning parts of speech, Mad Libs winds up being a fun way to have a little Language Arts lesson (LOL!). This "Best of" collection is also hefty--lots of pages!-- so the fun can go on. Of course, like my kids, you/yours can use pencil so you can later erase and redo and extend the life of each story. Super fun for the family!

A very nice approach of the real world of analytics. Mr. Collier is very didatic with his examples and with the do's and don't do.

Smart framing of analytics in terms of agile methods. A number of useful concepts that I'll incorporate into my everyday work.

Good coverage of agile topics and practices including user stories, team work, project automation and how to introduce agile aspects to BI projects. There are some practical pieces of advice to improve the way agile software configuration management and agile release management work.No consulting clutter, no obscure concepts. I clearly identified some of the scenarios and improvement opportunities mentioned in this book from my experience in business intelligence projects. Some of the practices may be difficult to implement if you are using COTS or off the shelf BI tools, or at least it won't be as easy as described by the author. Case in point: version control and continuous delivery, given the nature of the BI "code".Overall great description of agile projects. A bit detached from corporate environments in terms of sandpit environments and CD practices in the BI world though, which is understandable.

My manager read this book and recommended it to our data engineering team as a reference before we started using Agile for an Analytics project. I haven't completed the book but appreciate how the author discusses the challenges of software development then compares and contrasts that with database projects which have tended to be late adopters of Agile.

Agile Analytics is a good book, especially for someone new to agile BI development. I recommend this book to anyone looking for ways to bridge the gap between agile development and project management for applications and BI.

Excellent reference for anyone trying to improve their DWBI practice and their ability to deliver business value early & often. Very helpful use of examples and references to other Agile texts & authors. Distills several key agile techniques and practices from App Dev and applies them in a DWBI setting.

I had this book for a Data Warehousing class. The book is full of buzzwords. If you are buzzword person, you might like the language style. I feel like there are a lack of standards in the text and I feel like a lot of words and phrases are made up. There are a lot of acronyms that don't need to be acronyms. I knew the book would be a snoozefest as soon as I saw the rock climbing photo on the front. The whole thing is very corporate suit and very dated.

Very excited when I first came across this book but very disappointed when I read it - to discover that there is no how-to or practical info in the book that a BI project team could apply on their project.A lot of all the right words and Agile buzz but almost everything is conceptual.Andrew

This book really challenges cherished beliefs about social justice issues, particularly the value of full integration. Bell makes a persuasive argument to allow segregation and even some forms of discrimination as long as such actions are heavily taxed and that money diverted into social justice, such as education and economic programs. The proposal struck me as a form of carbon tax for racism. It's hard to disagree with Bell's assessment that racism is a fixed characteristic in American society. This book has certainly broadened my perspective as I continue to struggle for social justice.

Great book! After the 2016 election, Bell's book reads like prophecy. One wonders, had we all read this book prior to the election, would any of us be shocked by the outcome? Probably not. Highly recommended!

I reread this short story to remember why D. Bell is one of our icons of the 'Struggle" and understanding why Ferguson Mo..is a focal point for us now. This story reminds me that we are worthy of much more than what we have experienced. We need in 2014 to bring our education, money and fortitude to another level. It's time to change the strategy of our lives in America. We have options.I speak of one particular story 'Space Traders'...its just a valuable read to remind one of why the "Black Experience' is just that, lessons of where we have been, how we came to be, how we are viewed and respected for our contributions and deciding where we are going.

An excellent read and unfortunately, still relevant more than 25 years later. The topics covered in this book runs the full gamut of race theory subject matter. Derrick Bell makes a strong, though heart-breaking arguments for why racism as we know it in the United States may be a permanent feature of life in this country. In light of events of the last few years, I fear Mr. Bell’s prophetic book has gained more credence now than when it was first published.

Purchased because required text for an AA studies class. I actually enjoyed the small short stories and the way they make you think critically about race issues in America. Very good read.

A poignant and accurate illustration on race that unfortunately stands the test of time. Without completely rebuking racial equality, the author presents a compelling perspective that demands serious contemplation and leaves the reader questioning his or her role in the great epic battle of racial equality.

This is a monumental work which laid the foundation for what is now known as Critical Race Studies". Not very often does a scholar get to found a school of thought. Derrick Bell did this with this book and "And We Are Still Not Saved".

It is a great book set up in short stories written by a brilliant mind covering a multiplicity of Black people/issues. I love the way Derrick Bell teaches life's lessons from the African American world view.

The Panama Hat Trail: A Journey from South America, by Tom Miller

From Library Journal

Though offering perhaps more about Panama hats than the reader might ever want to know, this is a satisfying travel book that tells much else about Ecuador and its peoples. The growing, harvesting, and processing of straw, the weaving of it, the finishing of the hats, exportation, and all the bartering along the way is the glue that holds this book together. Visiting the countryside and towns such as Quito, Guayaquil, Lago Agrio, and Jipijapa ("among the ugliest towns south of the equator"), Miller tells us, among other things, about the Indians and their sad centuries-long plight, expatriates, illegal Ecuadorian emigration to the United States, precarious third-class Andean bus trips, the small Jewish community, and a wild and tragic Corpus Christi fiesta. Maps, index, and glossary not seen. Recommended for most travel collections. Roger W. Fromm, Bloomsburg Univ. of Pennsylvania Lib.Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This is a dynamic travelogue revealing much about Ecuador and its people as well as a study in global economics from the making of the Panama Hat. As a shaggy hat body from the Andes for $.65, it would become part of mainstream American commerce at a wholesale cost of $18.75. The author’s travels reveal both the history of the making of the hats as well as the process they use to produce them. From “Straw Hats—Their History and Manufacture,” by Harry Inwards, London, 1922: “Claims are made that in the Province of Manabi, a native named Francisco Delgado first made a Panama hat about 300 years ago….then he goes on to reveal that “making of`` grass fiber hats in the Western Hemisphere was…of the most remote antiquity.” I first traveled through Ecuador in the late 1970s, fresh out of Peace Corps Guatemala and returned with various donor groups over a twenty-year period. I found Miller’s journey revealing and informative, as well as relaxing. I also appreciated his dry wit as well as the obvious empathy for the people he encountered along the way. Those of us who have backpacked through Latin America could only chuckle at Miller’s checklist prior to boarding one of the local buses:1. Look at the tires….Visible threads on the tires means a blowout is imminent.”2. Does the bus have at least one windshield wiper?3. You can’t check the bus for brakes. Once I asked a driver in Guatemala about the brakes on his bus. “Look,” he said, “the bus is stopped isn’t it?”One chapter provides insights into some of the historic nuances of the country. “When you mention Guayaquil, the people of Quito snicker. Monos, monkeys, live there. Uncouth sacrilegious, lazy, no modesty or commitment to family or God. They lack ambition, culture, and spirituality….Quito and Guayaquil have so little in common they appear as if on different planets…”During his trek, the author makes some interesting side trips, including a trip into the jungle area in search of the impact of the growing oil industry, which is dominated by foreign corporations. He quotes the French sociologist, Claude Levi Strauss, who observed, “A continent barely touched by man lay exposed to men whose greed could no longer be satisfied by their own continent.” The Ecuadorian native Indians who live in the central highlands of the Andes make most of the hats, but according to the author, are at the bottom of the “social heap,” planting corn, harvesting potatoes.A story within a story emerges when the author veered from his Panama hat trail to check out the border to the north with Colombia. He came across several towns in this relatively isolated part of the country that reflected a new level of prosperity due at least partially to an “overflow from some of the world’s most productive coca cultivation and processing operations nearby.” In one raid in 1984 northeast of Puerto Colon, almost fourteen tons of cocaine were discovered! According to Miller, “The sleepy stretch of the San Miguel between the two countries, so friendly and easy to travel, turned out to be one of South America’s major drug highways.”Like many “Travel” authors, Miller provides some insights into the countries they pass through. He identified a “loss of national identify” not limited to tourist literature or straw hats and refers to the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, when ABC anchorman Peter Jennings briefly praised each country as its standard-bearer entered the Memorial Coliseum. When Ecuador’s flag came on, he summed up this lack of identity with, “The conquistadores stopped in Ecuador. They didn’t find enough riches, so they moved on.”He also highlights Moritz Thomsen, author of the “best English-language books about Ecuadorans coping with life at the bottom,” entitled, “Living Poor.” He went on to say that Moritz would agree with Robert Byron in defending traveling writers whose books insult their hosts: “Somebody must trespass on the taboos of modern nationalism, in the interest of human reason. Business can’t. Diplomacy won’t. It has to be people like us.” Miller ended this pithy segment of his book with, “To me, Ecuador had been a country with its head in the clouds, its heart on its sleeve, and it’s growing to the ground.”I’ve been fortunate enough to meet the author, and learned where our paths exploring the magical country of Ecuador had crossed over the years. I also became aware of, and recommend, his acclaimed adventure books including this one, as well as “On the Border” about his travels along the U.S.-Mexico border; “Trading with the Enemy,” which takes place in his favorite country, Cuba, and “Revenge of the Saguaro,” which takes place in the American Southwest.Miller has appeared in The New Yorker, LIFE, The New York Times, Natural History, and many other publications. He wrote the introduction to Best Travel Writing – 2005, and has led educational tours through Cuba for the National Geographic Society and other organizations. I’d agree with the National Geographic Traveler that this book is “among the best travel books ever written.”

Part travel log part Panama hat history, this book was a blast to read.Learned so much about the way straw fedoras/Panama’s are made, that they come from Ecuador not Panama and just how handcrafted they are by generations of artisans etc.Gave me a whole new appreciation for why straw hats cost what they do and a new dimension of admiration for them.

That Panama Hat is not from Panama! I am heading to Ecuador this summer and this book really helped set the stage for my trip. It is a well-written, insightful look at Ecuadoran culture from the viewpoint of the Panama hat development and production. But this is far more than about hats. Its about the indigenous peoples, the pride of craftmanship, the risk of losing individual artisans to mass production, the impact of the multinational corporations on local cultures and some of the internal conflicts within Ecuadoran society. Lest this should sound like a potential dull read it is not! Quite to the contrary, it is lively and engaging in the skilled hands of Tom Miller.. in fact I will probably read it again before my trip.

Fascinating book about the straw hat industry in Ecuador. Who knew that the Panama hat really came from Ecuador?!? Made me appreciate these hats and the women that make them. I read it while on a trip to Ecuador which made it more interesting.

Panama Hat was highly recommended for those traveling to Ecuador & it does give you the flavour of another time there. Miller liked what he was doing & he coveys it in effortless prose. The events took place in the 80s & I suspect this is a long ago world at this point. However, the traffic to macchu Picchu & the Galapagos is right there. So it's an interesting, well written history of the region, with well chosen quotes from different historical travelers & history books. So far, as I am not finished reading it yet, it is an easy, comfortable read which I recommend with no reservations. & I'd like to end up with a collection of Panama hats, as Miller apparently has.

If you're interested in Ecuador this is a "must read" book. I really enjoyed the book. I like hats, too, but the book is even better for its Ecuadorian history and culture. A well written book of Ecuador, its culture and history. He writes in a nice and easy style. I was disappointed in Ecuador to see very few men wearing this hat and the book explains the history behind their aversion.

Entertaining and helped me know something about Panama hats which originated in Ecuador.

I very much enjoyed this book as a lead-up to my visit to the home of the Panama Hat, which as you should know is...Ecuador! Although the book was written a number of years ago, the information about the hats, the country and the people appears to remain accurate. Mr. Miller's style and the details he includes kept me engaged all the way through (and made me, I'd like to think, a more knowledgeable visitor and hat buyer!)

I started with the sample and when that ended bought the book to finish this amazing story. You get drawn in from the first and as for me I usually limit myself to a chapter or two a night to enjoy a books writing I found that I couldn't and didn't want to put this down....although the main character is somewhat selfish at first you find out the reason why and that she grows so quickly through circumstances such as the death of her mother and the blame she feels from her brother(s). I don't want to give away more but if you like time slip books (and I was sceptical at first that I would) make this one of the first if not the first one you read! You will enjoy and maybe come away looking at things differently. ENJOY

This author is the best I have ever read. Unfortunately this seems to be her only work. This is time travel like you have never read. Such deep characters, beautifully worded descriptions that place you in the moment, realistic conversations, descriptions of food and drink that make you salivate, the feel of fabric, the inter-relationship between "upstairs and downstairs, the completion of the storyline bringing everything together. Please Ms. Langridge honor your readers with more of your talent. This book is worthy of the library shelf...not the donate box. Excellent read.

I wrote a time travel romance myself and am therefore very interested in reading others.Of course I started with a judging frame of mind, especially after reading several other time travel romances that were terrible.I am happy to tell you this book exceeded my expectations by far, and the story kept me intrigued until the end. It’s also very well written, and even though I found the first half a bit slow, I realize the seeds had to be set for the great second half.Very well done, Callie Langridge. Keep on writing. We want to see more from you.

I quite enjoyed this time travel novel about a young woman whose life in the present day goes to hell after the death of her mother. When Lou/Louisa wanders through the derelict hulk of an abandoned mansion, she’s transported to 1913 as the family that owns the house is on the verge of suffering tragedy and ruin. Louisa finds herself falling for the oldest son, but this is not your typical time travel romance. The story is more about her struggle to find a way to help the Mandeville family and about her relationship with various characters in the past. The house itself plays a magical role, which is a nice touch. And the family dynamics in both the past and present seem believable. I like the way the author sprinkles in the budding feminism of that era.

Really lovely story with a very original premise and a surprise ending. There was no attempt to explain the how of time travel, and no need. I think we all could wish for a visit to a different time and place when life becomes difficult to bear. To be useful and help in that distant world would be even better. Both time periods were realistically described amd the contrast palpable.

I just finished reading and I'm so confused about my feelings. I have enjoyed so much this time travel story. I felt and saw everything that the characters did. That's why I feel sadness. How can anyone choose between the love of the mother and sibling and that of the love of your life? No one should have to make such a choice. It is a gerat book one of the best I read in time travel but prepare yourself, it will break your heart. Well done! I'm looking forward to the author's next book.

What a great story! At first it seemed the book moved slow but as I continued to read, the story became more and more interesting. It moved slow in the beginning so you could understand Lou's background and her developing relationships to the new characters she meets in Hill House. While there isn't a HEA for Lou and Tom staying together, the book ends on an upbeat note with regards to the changes in fortune for the residents past and present of Hill House and Lou's troubled family. The love between Tom and Lou was heart wrenching and beautiful. I'm glad I read it.

This is a wonderful story of a bygone era and crumbling old house, brought back to life by the mysterious involvement of a young girl who is transported back in time to change the history of the house and its owners. This takes place in early 20th century England. Very good story!

Prior to reading Kramer's now-classic ruminations on Prozac and its sibling drugs, I read Joseph Glenmullen's Prozac Backlash, a damning response to Kramer's work. Glenmullen is convincing and well documented (and speaks to my own prejudices); therefore, I was prepared to despise Kramer. I didn't. And I don't. Granted, Kramer does not spend much time on the undesirable side effects of Prozac and other antidepressant drugs, but it's almost beside the point, since his emphasis tends towards philosophical and ethical efficacy, rather than medical efficacy. Kramer does not pretend to be doing anything other than laying bare some very challenging questions. He prescribed Prozac as an antidepressant and discovered that it was altering personalities--not in the far more negative way that was later found in cases of uncharacteristic violence, but in ways that patients perceived as positive. Formerly shy people were far more outgoing. Kramer raises an important question: Is it ethical to withhold a treatment for painful shyness when the physician has no reason to diagnose depression? Dozens of (to me) frightening facts are reported; for instance, for the past fifty years it has been commonplace to make a diagnosis after observing drug side effects. In other words, now that we know that Prozac can cure shyness in some people, shyness is now a diagnosis that needs a cure. Particularly interesting and insightful is Kramer's observation that certain personality characteristics are valued (or de-valued) in various cultural scenarios, which change over time as well as from one group to another. Speaking of his client who overcame shyness as a side effect of her anti-depressant medication, he writes, "If we see Tess's transformation as a victory, it's because of a change in mores, because we value the assertive woman and shake our heads over the long-suffering self-sacrificer. Perhaps medication now risks playing a role that psychotherapy was accused of playing in the past: it allows a person to achieve happiness through conformity to contemporary norms." Kramer also cited a quite intriguing series of monkey studies, where researchers found that the Alpha male (tribal leader) had higher levels of serotonin than other males in the tribe. Also, when an Alpha male was defeated in a challenge to his leadership, his serotonin levels took an immediate dive. The researchers arbitrarily gave serotonin to male monkeys to see if it influenced the balance of power in the tribe. They found that, if the Alpha male had been removed, the serotonin-enhanced monkey quickly became the new leader. However, in the presence of a reigning Alpha male, the serotonin-enhanced monkey was unable to rise further than first lieutenant. Citing study after study of various components of brain chemistry, Kramer brings me to question the whole notion of personality as being an integral characteristic of the individual human being. More and more I become confused about how much of me is me and how much is a chemical soup that controls my emotions and behaviors. Glenmullen's book is the most constructive, in terms of revealing effective treatments for depression, yet I still recommend Kramer for his thoughtful evaluation of the possibilities represented by these drugs and his unabashed admission of the philosophical issues and ethical questions involved.

"Listening to Prozac" is one of those books that really makes you think about where the quick-paced world of science is going to take us in the future. Kramer carefully fingers the topics of "self" and psychopharmacological Calvinism, while articulating the history of modern neuropharmacology. Should a person have to bear the ordinary pains of life, or should we allow Prozac to provide a temporary escape? Can a person be "more like him/herself" after taking a little pill? Questions like these may never be answered, but this books helps teach the reader the basics on brain bio as well as the perspectives on brain philosophy necessary to make an informed decision.

Good insight into anti-depressants for anyone who has struggled with anxiety and panic and fear of starting a medication for relief.

Decent book about prozac. I'd recommend it for anyone who is prescribed prozac.

Read it years ago, and was just a review. Very informative about the medication, Prozac.

Amazing book. Amazing medicine.

Best book on depression, next to author's Against Depression

All you need to know about a popular medicine that saves lives.
