The high rating must be due to the author's many friends. However, without the good ratings, I would have dumped it after reading the first third. That part of the book was dominated by mundane daily activities that could have been reduced by seventy five percent without the loss of story content. Thereafter, it took off and was highly entertaining. The epilogue added what was supposed to be a dramatic twist which was not supported by the content of the novel.
Full Disclaimer: I flew with the author from 94-96.When I first read the storyline for the book, I was skeptical that it could be a thriller. A thriller set in a training setting? Really? Knowing the author's operational experience, I wondered why he chose a training environment for the novel. Still, I was intrigued and purchased the book.I'm so very glad I did.I couldn't put it down. On a long flight, instead of sleeping (like I needed to do), I was glued to the book. Michael Lewis was able to weave Cold War memories into the book. His vision when he wrote it, make it even more relevant if you follow recent events by Russia in Europe (Hint: The Cold War is not dead).The characters in the book take on life -- a key for non-fiction. The faces, places, and timelines feel so real. As I read it, I could visualize it in my head. Lewis' first effort was a home run for me. Non-fiction is not normally my choice, but this was a great story told by a great storyteller. It felt so real.I can't wait for Lewis' next book. I hear there is one in the works. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and pick up "Surly Bonds."You will be glad you did.Christopher
If you ever want to know what it is like to live through the yearlong pressure cooker that is US Air Force pilot training, this book captures it all. Although I went to US Air Force navigator training, it was exactly the way Lewis spells it out. Highs and lows and never knowing if today was your last day in training and your chance of lifetime was over. Mix that with espionage and that's what you get in "Surly Bonds." This is a must read!
The story was too disjointed to really follow. Story jumped from character to character and place to place. At times I thought that I was reading a different book. Some places of description became too long and unimportant to the story line. I found myself skimming pages at a time and not missing any of the story. It finally came together at the end (you really figure out who is the "bad guy" long before the end. I will have to think twice before I buy any other books by this author.
As an Aerospace Historian, I enjoy reading fiction about aviation and space. I nabbed this one for my Kindle and must say I thoroughly enjoyed it! He grips the pulse of AF culture and what it's like to be a sweaty palmed student trying to transition to jets.Throw in a Russian spy, and we're off and running.I certainly recommend this one and am looking forward to reading the follow up.
Last week, I took to the airways and traveled to Europe/Central Asia. It was a neat trip, but to accomplish meant a lot of miles on an airplane. Those miles and hours afforded me the opportunity to crack open my copy of "Surly Bonds". I gotta tell you, 20 pages in and I was hooked. In fact, I read when I should have been sleeping and paid for it during my business meetings. I went to work immediately upon landing and tallied a 30-hour day and I was exhausted. The painful day one was worth it because the book and it's intriguing storyline had kept me thoroughly entertained, enthralled, and anxious to get back to my book! The many twists and turns constantly kept my attention. Michael Byars Lewis is certainly a gifted writer and I look forward with great anticipation to the release of his next book. Whether it's the next installment in Jason Conrad's adventures or a new start, I know Lewis will turn out a great book!
There was a lot of writing for such a short story. Although the characters were somewhat believable the story line was extremely weak. What the author thought was a blockbuster ending was a fizzle and was drawn out way too long. On a scale of one to ten I barely gave it a two......
It is all about the story and entertainment. Michael made a few neophyte author mistakes, and the manuscript would have benefited by having good proofreading. But, debut authors often do that. Lewis was able to weave a story that described a training program that was informative and very entertaining. The ending took me by surprise and left me very satisfied and glad that I read the novel. Keep it up!
