The Blue Guide is the best information available, with a lot more info on history, art and architecture than any other guide.The reason for the three stars is that this version offers neither a table of contents nor an index.

This is not a book about beaches, hotels, and restaurants. It is the best guide about history and archaeology. Worth the price if you are there to see and learn rather than tan like a pig skin.

The Blue Guide tradition of giving full information is capably upheld in the volume about Sicly. This is perfect when you need to know all about an archeological site. I bought this book for a short trip to the island and I found it perfect for learning all the details I crave. I recommend the e- book edition on a Kindle or tablet to avoid lugging around a weighty tome.

Absolutely fantastic historical and archeological guide. Best used as a supplement to traditional travel guides.

Some might believe that the telling of a physicist’s life would be droll fare for anyone other than a fellow scientist, but in this instance, nothing could be further from the truth.Dr. Feynman’s delight with life shines through everything--nothing gets him down for long. The reasons for this attitude are his ever-present compulsion to learn and discover, his urge to follow his insatiable curiosity (about everything!) wherever it might lead, his willingness to simply state whatever he thinks when asked, and his refusal to always take life so seriously. It is evident that Dr. Feynman has achieved what many can only dream of--living a meaningful and accomplished life while still being able to find absolute joy and fun in so much of how we spend that life.It’s hard to imagine anyone that would not find this an interesting and enjoyable read. Although Dr. Feynman is a physicist, this is not a science book, and the reader really needs nothing in the way of a scientific background to fully enjoy it.The book is divided into five parts corresponding to different parts of the author’s life. Within each part, the stories themselves are rarely more than half a dozen pages long, and none depend on the others. Although I read it cover-to-cover in order, it would be easy to open to any of the stories and read it independently. We are not often blessed with persons of the amazing intelligence of Richard Feynman. Even someone with just a smattering of science and math can appreciate this Nobel Prize winning, bongo drum playing, safe cracking denizen of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. Here was a man of superior intellect who could yet relate to the world around him and who had a curious interest in many facets of human endeavor. That is coupled with obvious tenderness toward his first wife, who dies of TB during the Manhattan Project. Even as Feynman writes about that in tightlipped fashion, his deep love for her and sorrow for the loss comes through.The book is not tightly organized but it is smartly written. Guys like Einstein, Feynman, Carl Sagan will all wrestle from time to time with the non-scientific question of what preceded the Big Bang, if only by asking fleetingly if there is some principle of causation behind it all. Obviously I don't know if God exists or what it all means. But it is hard for me to think that such a towering intellect encased in such a lovely witty and wise person results from mere accident. I'll go no further.

Feynman is a genius. The entire book is full of charming, intelligent, and surprisingly inspiring stories about the "curious character" that was the late, great Richard Feynman.The last chapter is something else entirely: an entire philosophy and ethos of scientific thought rolled into a few pages. I found Feynman's principles and ideals for scientific integrity almost unbelievably precious: to never compromise on experimentation, to never make claims you can't back up with hard evidence, and most importantly, to never fool yourself into thinking that you're more right than you actually are.Although only the scientifically or mathematically trained will understand much about Feynman's actual work, his life philosophy and its implications are something that everyone can benefit from. The world would be a better place if each of us tried to replicate just a little of his intellectual integrity. I almost didn't believe such beautiful, pure intellectual idealism wasn't possible until I read this book.

Richard Feynman is the exact brand of aloof, irreverent, genius that the world needs, at any and every time. This casual telling of myriad anecdotes from Feynman's life is precious and airy, even when dealing with early nuclear secrets, death, and other heavy topics. If you're not sold on buying this book, be sure to watch several of the popular Richard Feynman videos on YouTube. This book is better than any of them. Enjoy.

Very entertaining book. Feynman was famous for taking a fresh, original approach in physics; he was always re-inventing the ideas for himself by thinking them through profoundly, starting from fundamentals. He made great contributions and won the Nobel Prize in Physics. This book is not so much about physics, instead some humorous stories and adventures, which show his fresh, original approach to life. I admire his enthusiasm, his love for adventure, his sparkling personality, his honesty and the clarity of his thought, and his disdain for pretense. The anecdotes give much insight into why Feynman was such a great physicist. If you want learn about physics, with his original approach on full display, his best two books are the famous "Feynman Lectures on Physics" (undergraduate courses at Caltech) and "QED, the Strange Theory of Light and Matter".

A strangely inspiring and provocative book. It's hard to put into words the power of this book. Feynman's personality comes through so strongly that you rage against stupid bureaucrats, you see what it means to be an original thinker uninhibited by orthodoxy, you see one of the best explanations of the difference between genuine science and "cargo cult science" as Feynman calls it. You see one of the best explanations for why the California education system has such troubles, when you read his account of reviewing textbooks for the state. Somehow this book inspires you to be smarter, to be more original, and to be more intellectually honest.

At age 50 I was a certified, card-carrying carboholic. A typical lunch consisted of a bag of chips, a pack of snack crackers and either a bag of cookies or a candy bar…eaten at my desk while I watched the fitness freaks work up a sweat in the noonday sun. Needless to say, I was a type 2 diabetic by the time I reached age 55. When the doctor gave me the bad news, he said the goal of treatment was to “…make the diabetes train go slower and slower and slower…until it crashed at the end.” I didn’t like the sound of that crash.Dr. Day’s “The Longevity Plan” will tell you how to fix the tracks and add rails to the end of the line. The book tells the delightful story of the lifestyle of the centenarians of the little, remote village of Bapan, China. In the book, he walks us through seven lessons from Bapan, and gives suggestions on how to apply them to a modern western society. Each lesson is backed up with findings from scientific studies. The book is not just another diet and exercise book, although there are chapters on both topics. The book is much broader in scope, covering lifestyle issues like living in community, finding rhythm in your life, adapting to your environment and finding purpose in changing circumstances.My wife thinks I’m pretty radical about diet and exercise these days, but I tell her that Dr. Day’s zeal exceeds mine. I don’t think I’ll ever master salads for breakfast. I think I’ll keep eating the parts of the chicken found at my local grocery. (I’m not up to an offal mess yet.) And I don’t think I could handle 14 hours a day in motion.However, while some sections of the book can be intimidating, it also provides encouragement and challenge. Don’t like the Bapan diet? Find one you like and stick to it. (My own favorite is the Glycemic Index Limbo Diet. How low can you go!) Can’t be in motion 14 hours? Start by parking your car further from the office and walk up the stairs rather than take the elevator.The book left me wishing for more. Since I’d like to see the good doctor remain gainfully employed, here a couple of suggestions for the sequels.I’d love to see more details on the scientific studies associated with each of the lessons. Things like the number of subjects in the study, the length of the study, and any caveats associated with interpreting the results. What kind of epigenetic changes are associated with the lesson? What impact on cellular health or telomere length?Another sequel would be to compare the lifestyle of Bapan to other centenarian hotbeds like Acciaroli, Italy and Ikaria, Greece. Is it just lifestyle, or are there elements in the microenvironment (magnesium or manganese or calcium in the water or soil? Is it their nightly brew of Goat’s Rue tea? Or is it perhaps an undiscovered “Methuselah Gene”, the result of natural selection in these villages?) Contrasted with the centenarians of Okinawa and Loma Linda, CA, it would make for a fascinating read.At 70, I’m only at the beginning of my centenarian journey. However, the book encouraged me enough to think that I might just live long enough to attend the wedding of my youngest grandchild’s oldest child. I’d have to live to at least 105 to be there!

In a fast paced world of excessive complexity and conflicting voices and opinions, Dr. John has extracted and highlighted some key principles for long term health and happiness. The stories of centurians in China and his personal experiences with them is very engaging and the principles he highlights are both well researched and accessible. A strong voice for a more simple approach to better health, happiness and longevity. Additionally, Dr. Johns blog is one of the most valuable sources for good health advice that is not compromised by self interest. A must read for everyone seeking better quality of life.

The Longevity Plan is disarmingly simple, yet exquisitely profound. While a cardiac patient at IHC for 4 days in late June 2017, Dr. Day became my cardiologist. When he first came to my room, we spoke at length whereby he described the essence of his new book about to come off the press on July 4. At age 76 while still in the peak of good health (I thought), hadn't spent a night in a hospital since age 5 (tonsillectomy), drug free except for an occasional antibiotic, my guardian angels apparently decided an intervention was necessary and arranged for me to become a patient of Dr. Day. After 4 days, I was released June 26...escaping with my life and little or no permanent damage. The Longevity Plan, along with Dr. Day's personal assurance, has given me great hope of a full recovery and rebuilding of my heart tissue, such that I can live a long and physically active life, totally drug free. Already I have resumed playing tennis an hour and one half every day. Never have I read a book that has so dramatically changed my life and given me the hope, the pure knowledge and the very simple path to better health than I had before. The book is very easy to read and understand, yet based on the mountain of footnotes and references, is no doubt the culmination of many thousands of hours of research and studies performed by Dr. Day and his many colleagues. Thank you Dr. Day for your contribution to the better health of mankind and especially mine.

This is an excellent book. It is fun to read and very informative. It would be five star except for two minor issues I have.It is a little too confident of it's own predictions. I was very impressed with judgement of the author as to the reasons for longevity in the village. However, there were no comments about potential errors or incorrect guesses. For a subject this complex and controversial, it is unlikely that all their guesses are correct. Or maybe they missed an important element. About the Author

Ray Seyfarth was born in Natchez, Mississippi in 1953. He went to public schools in Natchez and earned a B.S. degree in Mathematics from Delta State University in 1974. In 1978 he completed an M.S. degree in Mathematics from the University of Southern Mississippi. He worked for 5 years as a scientific programmer at NASA beginning in 1977. His work at NASA included Fortran and Assembly programming for remote sensing and image processing on a variety of 16 and 32 bit computers. In 1984 we returned to school at the University of Florida to study Computer Science. He completed his Ph.D. at Florida in 1989. From 1990 to 2012 Dr. Seyfarth taught Computer Science at the University of Southern Mississippi. He taught a wide variety of subjects and enjoyed learning new languages and algorithms. He retired from Southern Miss in 2012 and since retirement has spent his time writing, programming, woodworking and gardening.

EDIT: The criticisms I had below still hold, but I've increased my rating from 2 to 4 stars. Oddly enough, right around page 50, the quality of the book dramatically improved. I haven't spotted errors, and it became substantially more readable. Overall, this book is pretty good way to get a decent idea of how to read and work with x86 64-bit assembly for Linux/OS X in only about 200 pages. I suspect that if I wanted to really become proficient with assembly, I'd need another, more comprehensive work. But I'm content with having the ability to read and understand assembly when I come across it, and this book is sufficient for that goal.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I am only about 50 pages in, and will update if my view changes.Unfortunately, the book seems riddled with typos and mistakes. For instance, pages 32-35 on reading memory with ebe:-he completely changes several lines in the example program from what it was just a couple pages earlier, with no explanation for why, and then uses one of the changed lines as a breakpoint-in the "define variable" menu that he directs the reader to, he mentions a "size" parameter that can be adjusted. This parameter doesn't seem to exist in my system...and it doesn't even exist in the supporting screenshots in the book. What gives?-Attempting to follow his instructions, I am simply not seeing the same behaviorThat being said, the information itself seems good, so I hope it gets better. I was really hoping for a good tutorial that would walk me through exercises. This seems to position itself that way, but if the examples aren't accurate then the utility of the book is substantially reduced.

This book really made sense conceptually. This explains in straight forward language how processors and assembly language works. If you want to develop an understanding of assembly language this book is a good place to start. The code examples didn't seem to make sense. But after reading the book I was able to find a lot of program examples online and make sense of them. I would say this is a good book whether you are learning x86_64 assembly as a first language or you are an experienced programmer. It's also a fast read and stays interesting as far as programming books are interesting.

I love this book so much, it's not funny. I just wish there were more of it.Assembly programming is so exciting to me, I wish this book existed for the entire AMD64 instruction set.Not for building your own OS, but rather for optimizing your existing programs with assembly. Shows how to view existing programs assembly code with objdump, shows how to interact with c or other compiled libraries, and how to write your own.

I bought this book to bring my 32-bit Intel assembly programming knowledge up to date. It does not disappoint. The text is clear and the author provides a very useful and free workbench (ebe) that lets you assemble your code, run it and debug it just like an IDE. The workbench lets you see the processor registers, the stack backtrace, variables and memory and many other things) all at the same time. I work almost exclusively on OS X and I couldn't get the workbench to work the first time I installed it, so I sent an email to the author and got a reply within the hour. After a couple of email exchanges, the problem was resolved (it was an issue with the installation of third party software, not the author's).

As output array stores more values, it overwrites the values in [15] & [16] with correct values that are for P16, P17. OKIn my example, since there's only 16 columns, the values in [15] & [16] aren't overwritten but are left in the output array.Same issue if there's more than 1 output row. Francisco Erize is a well-known conservationist in Argentina and author or coauthor of numerous books on the wildlife of both Argentina and South America, including The National Parks of Argentina and Other Natural Areas. His photographs have appeared in hundreds of publications. Jorge R. Rodriguez Mata is a freelance artist specializing in bird illustration. His work has appeared in a number of Argentine publications, and he is currently working on a definitive guide to the country's birds. Maurice Rumboll, also based in Argentina, is an environmentalist, bird-tour leader, and freelance writer. He is coauthor of Birds of Southern South America and Antarctica (Princeton).

This Princeton Illustrated Checklist covers only "Non Passerines: Rheas to Woodpeckers". In their introduction the authors are rightfully proud to have compiled illustrations, range maps and useful information for almost 1,300 non-passerines in such a compact, field-worthy "pocket-sized volume", but they concede that "in the other pocket one will have to carry a regional, country, or local guidebook as well to complete the information regarding the other 1,800 or so species". What they fail to note is that almost any such guide would include coverage of the non-passerines, as well.If you plan to travel to more than one South American country or if you're traveling to a country or region not adequately covered by a contemporary field guide, you should certainly pack this volume. If your travels are limited to northern South America, the field guide volume of the two-volume set by Restall, Rodner & Lentino would be a reference for the passerines (and the non-passerines). If your travels take you to southern South America, an illustrated Princeton checklist (which I have not seen) covers all species found in that region, including of course the passerines.Back to the guide under discussion: the plates are for the most part well-organized and the artwork attractive and presumably accurate (based on a random sampling of species with which I am familiar). The facing-page species accounts concisely offer ID clues and habitat preferences (often quite informative), along with continent-wide range maps. I have not yet visited South America, but I'm confident that during my visits there this guide will be of considerable value.But of course I'll bring at least one guide for the other pocket! Until someone publishes a compact guide to the passerines of South America (a formidable task indeed), this illustrated (and well-annotated) checklist will be a volume in search of a companion.

This is a great and thorough guide to all the non-passerines in South America, a continent with astonishing avian diversity. I love this book, as I have loved every book I get from Princeton. The illustrations are incredible and each page has great information!

I recently traveled to Brazil for a conference and some birding-oriented travel, and waffled between purchasing this book (accompanied by Ridgely and Tudor's Songbirds of South America) or the single-volume Birds of Brazil by Ber van Perlo. At the advice of a few birder friends who had recently spent time in Brazil, I chose this book - and I am so glad that I did! Most other people I birded with had van Perlo's book, so I was able to compare the plates side-by-side. These two books were superior, often by orders of magnitude, in every single case - better, more accurate drawings; more accurate color rendition; more updated and precise range information; and more in-depth natural-history descriptions.My one complaint - beyond the size (which is unavoidable, given the expansive material covered) - is that some of the poses were, well, cheesy. Such as hawks and eagles depicted in aggressive screeching poses, as you might see in a Bald Eagle image on a cheap set of matching patriotic plates sold from the back of Reader's Digest. But don't let this dissuade you - this is the book to buy, no doubt about it!

Field-worthy quick reference books with adequate distribution maps for South America. Lightest, most comprehensive list I've found.

This book is a perfect combination of completeness and beatiful art work. The plates are great, accurate and useful in field, Its a good idea put some hummingbirds in flight because the mayority of cases it is the way that we see in field, so you learn to identified this complex family in this postures. The introductory chapters say the essentials and the review of birds families its a good point to start. Maybe I would have liked that the book had a more recent taxonomic treatments for the families, but this is a minor problem if you are familiarized with the systematics of south-american birds ( for more details or doubts simply look the american ornithologist union south american cheklist SACC). Additionaly the maps of geographical ranges are small but if you know the fundamentals of the continent topography you dont have problems. In sinthesis its a great book and very portable in field if you considerer your size...

Small enough to take along on a trip.

Overall very decent quality!

Print a little small, hard to look things up in the index.
