Witness: One of the Great Correspondents of the Twentieth Century Tells Her Story, by Ruth Gruber

From Publishers Weekly

Journalist Gruber, a Ph.D. at age 19, became an international correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune in 1935, launching a career that covered the liberation of Nazi concentration camps, the establishment of Israel and the first glimpse of Siberian gulags. Gruber has a charming, feminine perspective rare to the times; combined with her knack for (very) telling details, she makes a riveting storyteller. For instance, 1941 found Gruber in Alaska with troops preparing of the U.S.'s entry into WWII, and she captures their desperation expertly in a single quote from a teenaged soldier who visited her one morning: " 'Excuse me for bothering you. I'm so lonely. I only want to hear you laugh.' " Similarly, a planeful of Yemenite Jews emigrating to Israel in 1949 hides a thunderous story: "Because of years of starvation, (the Yemenites) were so tiny that the plane could hold twice as many Yemenites as Americans." Gruber also found herself a participant in history-making: at 33, she escorted 1,000 Jews from Europe to America; in a 1951 visit with refugees in Israel, Gruber admonished Prime Minister Ben Gurion for deplorable living conditions, prompting quick improvements. Complemented by a slew of Gruber's own photographs-which succinctly record the desolation and hope of the times-this life story makes for a fascinating journey. From Booklist

Through words and photographs, Gruber chronicles an 80-year career as a photojournalist and correspondent. She was a foreign correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune from 1935 until 1967. Gruber recorded the rise of Hitler in Germany in the 1930s and later documented the immigration of thousands of refugees to the U.S., an account that was the subject of her well-regarded book Haven. She went on to chronicle the emigration of Jews from Europe and around the world to Israel, recording the British attack on a boat carrying 4,500 Jewish refugees to Israel, an account that was later the basis for Leon Uris' Exodus. For this stunning book, Gruber chose the best photographs of her eight-decade-long career and offers essays recounting personal observations of major events of the past, including the construction of new cities in the Siberian gulag by pioneers and prisoners spared execution by Stalin. A fascinating look at world events by an adventurous and pioneering woman journalist. Vanessa BushCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

I saw an autobiography of Ruth Gruber on PBS. I was so impressed with her, I went to Amazon and bought two of her books. I was a journalism major in college in the 60s and could not get a full time job in journalism to save my life. I did get some part-time work in several weekly and monthly newspapers, but I couldn't make enough to live on. In her day and my day women were just not allowed in to the sacred men's world of journalism. I didn't have her ingenuity and chutzpah. I, too, went to Israel in the 1960s to see what was going on. I found a husband I wasn't looking for. I think that's what happened to many women who loved journalism but couldn't get through the front door. Ruth Gruber is my hero. God bless her.

I did not know about this person Ruth Gruber it was very interesting to see that you did so much I’m glad I read this book. The pictures she took were good they were good because they made me see what she saw at that time and she did so much it was interesting. The book was easy for me to read and it was formative.I recommend this bookSorry, for the misspelled words, and the wrong words here or any errors.I am using," Dragon speech recognition software 12.5 " from Amazon for people that can't use their hands for typing. Mem.Sin. 2001

I saw a documentary about Dr. Gruber on PBS. She has lived a truly amazing life; youngest woman ever to get a PhD, she saw Hitler speak (a daring feat for an American Jew), explored the artic circle in Russia, worked as a journalist/photographer around the world, lived in Alaska to study Eskimo women, worked for our government during WWII and was there to witness the historic arrival of the Exodus. After seeing the documentary, I wanted to learn more about incredible woman. This book does not disappoint.

This is a great read and inspirational! She broke the ‘Glass ceiling’ back in the 1930s, and went where no women or men had been before. In addition to her many accomplishments as a correspondent, she also saved many lives during WW11.

This memoir is a personal history of Ruth Gruber as well as a look back at the world of the mid-twentieth century. Of particular interest is Gruber's coverage of Jewish refugees after the second world war and the founding of the state of Israel. Not only was she there to witness these events, but her photos and news articles at the time also influenced the decisions of international policymakers. Her narrative and pictures are simple and straightforward, but both are made powerful by her compassion and quiet self-confidence. The book moves quickly through historical periods and can easily be read in a day.

Rather terrific photos of a pioneering correspondent.

Impressive book, makes me shudder - hooray to the Jewish population of the globe for their courage!!!

Amazing book! A courageous and delightful woman!

Over the weekend I finished reading the wonderful new book, The Secrets of Sand, by Kate Clover, et al. In addition to the best printed photos of sand I've ever seen, the written text is magnificent. Possibly because of my midwestern roots, I especially liked Ch. 4, "Rivers and Lakes." The text is sheer poetry!

We all of had sand in our shoes, dumped it out, and probably did not think much about it. Well, here is a book that takes a close look………a very close look at that ubiquitous material, sand. Well written and informative, I learned about the processes that make sand. For example, Florida sand is so uniform and white because it is composed of almost entirely of quartz. Almost all of the other less durable minerals have been weathered away…and that tough little fighter, quartz, remains. Moreover, those little grains of sand are what remains of the ancient Appalachian Mountains which once stood as tall as or taller than the current Himalayas. That is one story of many……a wonderful read.

Fascinating book with wonderful photography! Such miracles in the most unexpected and humble places. Who knew that the sand you dust off yourself at the beach could be so beautiful? 😄

The photos are pretty. Beyond that, there isn't really much going on here. Much of the sand pictured has biological origins, shells and tests from tiny marine organisms, which is pretty neat. But the authors didn't really bother to ID them except in the vaguest of ways.

Interesting read

This is very North American, mostly US centered. So, if you want more on sands from around the world, this is not it. Still, for sand collectors and those interested in geology of sediments it is good. Very heavy with pictures, so you could not read it at all and still enjoy the great pictures.

I gave this as a gift. However, I leafed through it before gifting it, and the friend who received it has raved about how interesting it is. Photos are fabulous.

Given to my geologist friend for Christmas. She spent hours reading and analyzing it
