Finally a Daniel Fast book that I can really connect with. I've read other books on fasting, prayer and specifically several on the Daniel Fast over the years. Fast like Daniel is a one stop shop for the Daniel Fast or any fast for that matter.Each day in the daily devotional is practical and unlawful. Simple digestible chunks that I can apply to my life. I'm already feeling more connected with God in prayer as the HSPE prayer concept alone has been a game changer for me. I love the illustrations. Love the fold out flaps. The words are not as engaging for young children as I wish they were. "In the field, wind waves golden tassels high above heads, and pollen floats through the air to the silks of a flower." It's good to have on the shelf, but I don't read aloud at circle.

We checked this out of the library for my almost-5-year old daughter, and she has really enjoyed it. On each page, we'd read a brief and poetic description of what season it was and what the plant and its flowers looked like, and how the flowers were pollinated. Then, half of the page would fold out to reveal the fruit or vegetable (or legume, in the case of peanuts)that would grow on the plant. It was a fun guessing game at first, then a fun remembering game on subsequent reads. The illustrations are wonderful, showing the plant in various stages of fruit development. There are detailed illustrations showing the initial transformation from flower to fruit. My daughter just found this fascinating! The book teaches quite a bit, but doesn't sound at all dry to read. And it doesn't get into too much detail about the parts of the plant/flower. There is a small section in the back with a bit more detailed description...but rather than simply reading that, I took some of the information from it and would just mention it during the story: "look, see those? That's called the stamen of the flower," or "see the yellow on the bee's legs? That's the pollen he got from this flower, and he's taking it over to that flower."I love reading books to my daughter that teach her about the natural world. This one does it in a fun way, and I highly recommend it for any child who is interested in how flowers change into the fruits and vegetables he or she loves!

It has been more than twenty years since I have been in school. Although I read a ton of books every year, this book helped me remember many of the good habits that I had forgotten and I also learned a few new ones that have been helpful in my new classes.

I'm out of school now, but I wish I'd read this before college. A short and useful text on how to read and study, Fry's book provides some practical advice on smarter reading strategies. Mostly it involves knowing how to read different types of text, going into an assignment with a purpose in mind, and previewing, reviewing, and summarizing strategies. It does not teach speed reading, but effective reading. The poor student can benefit more from the book than the good one, but even good students will pick up a few tips. Flaws include hawking his other books (though not too much), and an unnecessary chapter on ADD.

I read this book and I love it. I read many different books on how to read/study...however, no one gave specifics about how to handle a chapter in the book (paragraph by paragraph). If you want to "comprehend" a chapter or paragraph in a book, follow this author technique...I am sure you will then know "how/why" of the subject matter.

This is a wonderful update of the William H. Armstrong Study is Hard Work classic. It does not preach but reaches those who need it the most--the marginal or poor student. For those who are good students, it reaffirms that they are on the right track and may even add a point or two worth considering. Overall, I recommend this book because it speaks to today's youth in a manner that is encouraging, not condescending.

I downloaded this tonight and started glancing through it. Normally I don't like to cook, mainly because I don't like to eat. I just don't enjoy most food very much. However, I thought I'd give this a try, because I do like some southern food. I checked out a fair number of the recipes, and I've found over a dozen I want to try. Maybe if I like them I'll get a bit more adventurous and try some with less-familiar ingredients. It will probably take me a while to get to the ones I want to try, because cooking is seriously intimidating to me, but at least the recipes sound fairly simple. The cookbooks that take a couple of pages for one recipe are too complicated. I think that's the best thing about the way this book is designed, is that the actual cooking instructions are *not* intimidating. There are even some helpful guides in the back of the book for those of us who aren't that used to cooking, or get easily confused regarding cooking terminology. There's a helpful bit about why so many cooks prefer cast iron cookware.Some of the recipes are variations on familiar things such as meatloaf, and it looks like some of them can be toned down if you don't like chile or peppers. Oh yeah, there's a section giving heat ratings to various popular types of peppers, to give you an idea what you might want to try (or in my case, avoid). I would recommend this for people who like straightforward, basic recipes and explanations, people looking for homemade comfort food, those who might want to try something really different if they're not used to southern or southwestern cooking, or even if you just want a lot of new recipes to try. I have to say, a lot of the recipes look very creative! The price is far more reasonable than most of the cookbooks I've bought. I have quite a few, in a frustrating attempt to find recipes to my taste, and I really think this one has more appealing recipes than any other that I've seen.Some examples that look good are: Molasses Breakfast Cake (you had me at "breakfast cake"!), Cheez-It chicken (brilliant idea!), Dill-icious Pork Roast, Zesty Parmesan Potatoes, homemade pickles (!seriously?!), Johnnycakes circa 1840, Chocolate Snap Cake, Spiced Cider. Those are just some of the ones that appealed to me, but there are many, many more to choose from.

...just by browsing through it. What I really like is that it's a widespread collection - you get breakfast recipes, appetizers, salsa, soups, seafood, beef, breads and much more. And every recipe is been cooked and approved by the author himself, a fact I really appreciate. Therefore the instructions are easy to follow, even if you are only moderately experienced like me.The book also includes guides - helpful essays about e.g. the different kinds of salt or the heat units of peppers. And a dictionary of cooking terms and spice flavors which I personally found very helpful.All in all, a great collection. Highly recommended!

Dekker begins by describing two competing world views, the essentially mechanical view of the world spawned by Newton and Descartes (among others), and a view based on complexity in socio-technical organizations and a systems approach. He shows how each world view biases the search for the "truth" behind how accidents and incidents occur.The Newtonian-Cartesian world is ruled by invariant cause-and-effect; it is, in fact, a machine. If something bad happens, then there was a unique cause or set of causes. Investigators search for these broken components, which could be physical or human. It is assumed that a clear line exists between the broken part(s) and the overall behavior of the system. The explicit assumption of determinism leads to an implicit assumption of time reversibility--because system performance can be predicted from time A if we know the starting conditions and the functional relationships of all components, then we can start from a later time B (the bad outcome) and work back to the true causes. Root cause analysis and criminal investigations are steeped in this world view.In contrast, a complex system is open (it interacts with its environment), has components that act locally and don't know the full effects of their actions, is constantly making decisions to maintain performance and adapt to changing circumstances, and has non-linear interactions (small events can cause large results) because of multipliers and feedback loops. Complexity is a result of the ever-changing relationships between components.The most important feature of a complex system is that it adapts to its environment over time in order to survive. And its environment is characterized by resource scarcity and competition. There is continuous pressure to maintain production and increase efficiency (and their visible artifacts: output, costs, profits, market share, etc) and less visible outputs, e.g., safety, will receive less attention. The cumulative effect of multiple adaptive decisions can be an erosion of safety margins and a changed response of the entire system--a drift into failure.Drift by a complex system exhibits several characteristics. First, as mentioned above, it is driven by environmental factors. Second, drift occurs in small steps so changes can be hardly noticed, and even applauded if they result in local performance improvement. Third, complex systems contain unruly technology (think deepwater drilling) where uncertainties exist about how the technology may be ultimately deployed and how it may fail. Fourth, there is significant interaction with a key environmental player, the regulator, and regulatory capture can occur, resulting in toothless oversight."Drifting into failure is not so much about breakdowns or malfunctioning of components, as it is about an organization not adapting effectively to cope with the complexity of its own structure and environment." (p. 121) Drift and occasionally accidents occur because of ordinary system functioning, normal people going about their regular activities making ordinary decisions "against a background of uncertain technology and imperfect information." Accidents can be viewed as an emergent system property, i.e., they are the result of system relationships but cannot be predicted by examining any particular system component.This book is not a quick read. Dekker spends a lot of time developing his theory, then circling back to further explain it or emphasize individual pieces. He reviews incidents (airplane crashes, a medical error resulting in patient death, software problems, public water supply contamination) and descriptions of organizational evolution (NASA, international drug smuggling, "conflict minerals" in Africa, drilling for oil, terrorist tactics, Enron) to illustrate how his approach results in broader and arguably more meaningful insights than the reports of official investigations. One star off for repetitiveness, occasional Carl Sagan-like pedantry and poor proof-reading of the final couple of chapters.

I originally read this book and was thoroughly impressed. I had spent many years studying complexity science, and whilst this book was no real surprise, it was fascinating.I have since purchased many copies in the hope educating mindless managers of the futility of their safety systems. I work in the mining industry in Australia and this industry is paranoid about safety. There are many many many initiatives, innumerable systems, endless tick-boxes, boring mindless safety meetings and really to no avail.I presented my immediate managers these books. Very few considered reading them, and most obviously didn't. The safety approach was being driven at a higher level. "Let's get out CSTRT5b figure below 0.9" because executive management dictates it! So I presented books to the executive level. At that level there is no consideration that they and their methods should be questioned.All in all a futile exercise on my part.That aside the book is great, but unfortunately if it doesn't have pictures, isn't a comic, can't be distiller into a safety index, or presented concisely on a PowerPoint presentation, upward looking Managers and self preservation arrogant Executives just do not have the will to read such books, and dare I say it, the IQ to understand it.

Perhaps one of the most important books of the last 100 years.Four stars because it is dry and takes a long time to get to the point. Easy to bog down. WORTH the read.
