Jim Davis was born on July 28, 1945, in Marion, Indiana. I used to read Garfield religiously as a kid, and largely (pun intended) owe my sense of humor to this strip. While it will never, and SHOULD never be mentioned in the same breath as Calvin and Hobbes, Peanuts, or Far Side, it is nonetheless one of the great American cartoon strips... in it's early years.While Garfield hasn't hit it's stride in this volume, you can see that it was populated by characters that are very different from it's later insipid and shallow versions of the characters. Here you'll see the John with an acerbic wit that will turn sharper in later years. Odie is introduced as an empty headed but occasionally devious rival for John's affection. Liz shooting down John with caustic burns. Linus as a dim-witted but affable friend. John's crazy family.... all genuinely funny stuff. You also see Jim Davis slowly morphing into a truly talented artist.Pick this up to find out how Garfield ever became famous in the first place. The first ten or so of these volumes will also be worth reading. Just be ready to jump ship while the strip is still good. And for Gods sake don't bother with anything that's been printed the last 20 years or so...

This book is wonderful. I’ve been waiting literally decades for a dedicated hardcover collection of complete Garfield strips, and this delivers. The additional details by Jim Davis are a lovely insight into the world of Garfield and his creation.It’s a little bit of a shame that not every strip is presented in color, but the overall presentation more than makes up for it. I’ll be collecting every one of these volumes if only to have a complete reference library of comics that helped shape my childhood and make me the person I am today.

Love Garfield so this was an awesome way to know what I was getting ( in a very timely fashion) and no hassle of having to go from book store to book store or waiting forever at the local comic shop and it possibly not showing. Highly enjoyable experience all the way around.

The vice principal who served as advisor of my high school debate team would have loved this book. Not because it is packed with information and effective guidance, but because this material is carefully organized for speedy access and clear comprehension. Her mantra, which likely is shared among the time-starved who perennially manage with a high degree of effectiveness, was that resources are only helpful if you can drill to their essence immediately.The book is arranged in seven clusters, ranging from the nature of academic leadership and the ecosystem of the college or university to the budget of the college/university and the opportunities and challenges of being an academic leader.If you are new to a school and/or are taking on a new position, you likely will find it beneficial to read the first two sections of this book in their entirety. The information and scenarios covered in these first 195 pages provide both primer and checklists as you work to build your practice and develop new habits and ways of thinking.If you are new to administration, it would be ideal to read the book cover to cover, but you may need to tackle that over the course of a semester or longer so that you can give the sections your undivided attention. While beneficial when read in sequence, the other five sections and the subsections can be dipped into as needed.The title of each subsection gives a clear idea of its scope; and the headings within each subsection article reinforce important concepts. Each of these bite-size subsections provides information targeted at specific challenges and situations. A conclusion and list of references at the end of each subsection help you self-check your comprehension and take-aways, and provide resources in case you need to delve more deeply into a specific area.My only nitpick is with the physical construction of this book. It clearly is meant as an ongoing reference, and yet the cover and spine probably will not withstand heavy use. I commend Jossey-Bass for not skimping on the size of the body type and reducing page count, but do wish it had chosen a sturdier cover and binding, even if doing so had meant a slightly higher price point.Therefore, I would suggest that you plan to reinforce at least the corners and the spine of the paperbound version, especially if this book will be a shared resource in your office or staff library.

At first glance, this appears to be a tome you'll never have time to digest. Fortunately it's extremely well organized, easy to skim, and most scenarios you're likely to encounter will require reading only 2-3 pages (long enough to be helpful, but short enough to absorb quickly). It offers advice on scenarios from the mundane to the rare (e.g., press conferences).I especially appreciated that the case studies first depict a difficult but realistic situation, then lay out several "behind the scenes" possibilities that may legitimately sway your decision (in a variety of directions). I found this helped ensure nuanced thought rather than snap judgement, and improved one's ability to gracefully handle any new information that may arise.Tip: the Amazon "look inside" feature includes a table of contents, which gives you a sense of what the book covers. Although it sounds relatively abstract, the pages themselves have many concrete and tangible suggestions, and each chapter ends with a "resources" section (books/articles/etc.) that may be useful if you need more support on a topic.

With any reference source the first criteria I look at are, 1) does the author(s) know their stuff, and 2) is the book readable.The first criteria of deals with issues of authority and research, and to a small degree whether the author(s) can explain clearly what they know. The second criteria, for me, has more to do with explanations and a great deal to do with whether the writing is dry, cumbersome, and bland, versus entertaining and quickly absorbable. [There is, of course, a spectrum involved and authors can fall anywhere on those respective scales.] There is too the case of organization --which I think falls under both criteria.As far as 'Authority' -- I thought there was no doubt that the author knew his stuff. I don't ask you to trust my opinion. Look elsewhere for conformation.As for organization -- there are sections on Leadership, budgets, and the college eco-system. By far most of the material is about Leadership, it's definition and how the Dean/Provost fits into the college system. As he puts it, the Dean/Provost leads from the middle.There were many sections about Leadership and it wasn't immediately clear to me what was covered under each section. But once you read the first paragraph it's entirely clear what is covered. (And perhaps it was just my problem and I was missing the obvious.)>>In higher education, the politic are particularly vicious because the stakes are so small.>>LOL. There are humorous bits like the above throughout the book. And I must say that this book was much more readable than I ever thought it would be. So it meet the highest standards for my two initial criteria. Recommend.SUMMARYMy main bugaboo with desk references is readability. If I'm presented with dry, esoteric material I frankly will only use the reference under the most dire circumstances. I confess I haven't read great swaths of this book. It is, after all, "A Comprehensive Desk Reference." It is meant to be dipped into as needed. The sections I have read are, in the main, both well-crafted and thoughtful. They can also, it should be noted, be relatively terse, occasionally banal, and -- in some instances -- specific to the point of extraneous (IMHO). This is a curious book. I'm hard-pressed to imagine most college deans reaching for it in moments of indecision or crisis, but I do see how they might benefit by doing so. In all, a useful resource (within its limitations).

The high rating must be due to the author's many friends. However, without the good ratings, I would have dumped it after reading the first third. That part of the book was dominated by mundane daily activities that could have been reduced by seventy five percent without the loss of story content. Thereafter, it took off and was highly entertaining. The epilogue added what was supposed to be a dramatic twist which was not supported by the content of the novel.

Full Disclaimer: I flew with the author from 94-96.When I first read the storyline for the book, I was skeptical that it could be a thriller. A thriller set in a training setting? Really? Knowing the author's operational experience, I wondered why he chose a training environment for the novel. Still, I was intrigued and purchased the book.I'm so very glad I did.I couldn't put it down. On a long flight, instead of sleeping (like I needed to do), I was glued to the book. Michael Lewis was able to weave Cold War memories into the book. His vision when he wrote it, make it even more relevant if you follow recent events by Russia in Europe (Hint: The Cold War is not dead).The characters in the book take on life -- a key for non-fiction. The faces, places, and timelines feel so real. As I read it, I could visualize it in my head. Lewis' first effort was a home run for me. Non-fiction is not normally my choice, but this was a great story told by a great storyteller. It felt so real.I can't wait for Lewis' next book. I hear there is one in the works. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and pick up "Surly Bonds."You will be glad you did.Christopher

If you ever want to know what it is like to live through the yearlong pressure cooker that is US Air Force pilot training, this book captures it all. Although I went to US Air Force navigator training, it was exactly the way Lewis spells it out. Highs and lows and never knowing if today was your last day in training and your chance of lifetime was over. Mix that with espionage and that's what you get in "Surly Bonds." This is a must read!

The story was too disjointed to really follow. Story jumped from character to character and place to place. At times I thought that I was reading a different book. Some places of description became too long and unimportant to the story line. I found myself skimming pages at a time and not missing any of the story. It finally came together at the end (you really figure out who is the "bad guy" long before the end. I will have to think twice before I buy any other books by this author.

As an Aerospace Historian, I enjoy reading fiction about aviation and space. I nabbed this one for my Kindle and must say I thoroughly enjoyed it! He grips the pulse of AF culture and what it's like to be a sweaty palmed student trying to transition to jets.Throw in a Russian spy, and we're off and running.I certainly recommend this one and am looking forward to reading the follow up.

In fact, I read when I should have been sleeping and paid for it during my business meetings. I went to work immediately upon landing and tallied a 30-hour day and I was exhausted. The painful day one was worth it because the book and it's intriguing storyline had kept me thoroughly entertained, enthralled, and anxious to get back to my book! The many twists and turns constantly kept my attention. Michael Byars Lewis is certainly a gifted writer and I look forward with great anticipation to the release of his next book. Whether it's the next installment in Jason Conrad's adventures or a new start, I know Lewis will turn out a great book!

There was a lot of writing for such a short story. Although the characters were somewhat believable the story line was extremely weak. What the author thought was a blockbuster ending was a fizzle and was drawn out way too long. On a scale of one to ten I barely gave it a two......

It is all about the story and entertainment. Michael made a few neophyte author mistakes, and the manuscript would have benefited by having good proofreading. But, debut authors often do that. Lewis was able to weave a story that described a training program that was informative and very entertaining. The ending took me by surprise and left me very satisfied and glad that I read the novel. Keep it up!
