The best way to describe this book is as an entire season of a TV show.There are 8 main POV characters (and numerous secondary and tertiary characters) and their storylines don't always overlap. They have their own arcs with rises and falls that often complement each other, but don't always match. But then you get to the season finale...and it's huge in scope and impact and emotions.The first 1/4 of the book is a little slow, a lot of dominoes were set up. and characters were (re)introduced. But any slowness in the set up pays off x100. And it pays off in this emotional catharsis. The characters get soaring victories, moments of happiness and joy. And for every victory, there’s a tragedy, a moment that’s written to calibrate exactly the maximal pain. After 3 books with these characters, I really care about what happens to them and am very attached. (And okay, yes, I also ship so many of these characters, but especially Sam and Evie).On top of all this wonderful character development is a thread, of underlying musings on America and its place in history. It's very well developed and well researched and feel so relevant today, even though this book is set in the 1920s.Bray has created characters that I care about deeply, and I can't wait to see how all these complex story lines resolve in the final book. (Final note - listen to the audiobooks of this series. The narrator, January LaVoy, is truly phenomenal.)

The Diviners series is one of my favorite ongoing series! Set in 1920s New York, this series follows several young Diviners, or people with supernatural powers, as they discover their abilities and battle ghosts from beyond the veil (or tear...?). The young group that we follow is an incredibly diverse mix of characters:-Evie O'Neill-Sam Lloyd (Russian and Jewish)-Theta Knight (Creole)-Henry DuBois (gay)-Ling Chan (Irish/Chinese, asexual who likes ladies, disabled)-Memphis and Isiah Campbell (African American)We follow each character at different points throughout the series and they each have such distinct voices. From the brash, selfish, and flashy Evie to the incredibly smart and no nonsense Ling to the poetic and protective Memphis.Aside from the characters, the author does an incredible job of building the atmosphere. Not only is it spooky and sometimes downright terrifying but it also discusses the identities of each of the characters against the political backdrop of the times. Libba Bray discusses issues of immigration, eugenics, disability, and race and ethnicity.It's a bit of spoiler to discuss the plot of this novel as it is the third in the series, but the plot does really slow down here, without the contained story line of the other novels, as we ramp up to the final installment of the series. There's a lot of exploration of the Diviners powers as well as trying to put some of the pieces from previous novels together. The tone does get quite dark as the community starts to turn against the Diviners.TW: sexual assault, somewhat graphic murder scenes, death, violence.

Libba Bray is very bit as much as poet as her character Memphis is. While Memphis writes verse in the style of the Harlem Renaissance poets, Bray writes prose in her own inimitable style, weaving a gripping suspense story that in all its complexities delves into the subjects of good and evil, life and death, and ordinary and extraordinary. Her readers, me among them, are sucked in, wanting these wonderful, flawed characters to prevail, to push back against the nightmarish King of Crows. Bray succeeds in stretching readers to the limits of our nerves, creeping us out while making us beg for more. richly endowing her characters with all the achingness of humanity. Her cast has broadened in this installment of The Diviners, and it now includes more of the people whose lives have been altered by any number of different stages in antagonist Jake Marlowe's Eugenics-tainted Ubermensch experiments. Connections are made between the nightmares these characters have been enduring to the real life dangers that have entrapped or even killed those they have loved. A warning: not all the characters we've come to know make it out of this novel unscathed. I am beyond eager to read the next book, because I feel as though I've walked through hell alongside Evie, Sam, Henry, Lin, Theta, Memphis and Isaiah, Jericho, and all the others. I want, no, I need, to know what happens next!...And after all, isn't that what makes a series of novels successful? Greedy readers! Count me among them.

I preordered this book as soon as I heard it was available and I am not disappointed in any way. This is one of my favorite series to read/have red.This is the third book in this series, and it really pushes the story along as many questions are starting to get answers, the characters stories are expanded, and we see them really come together for a common goal. There are a lot of social issues covered, all of them relevant to the time and our time also. I did not feel this was propaganda for the author's politics. All of the characters are young, just starting thier adult lives and these are issues you would face privately and in the world as you learn how to navigate the adult world. The end of the book came much too soon and I did not want to leave, hopefully I won't have to wait as long for the next book as I did for this one. I can not reomend this book/ series enough.

What a better round the world guided tour than reading Tim Marshall's "A Flag Worth Dying For". Colorful and rich in detail, Marshall gives us brief (and occasionally not so brief) histories of how flags came into being for many nations.Vexillology, or the study of flags, begins with our own Stars and Stripes. While, as an American, this chapter I know best, there were still facts presented that added to my knowledge. A particular treat in the first couple of chapters is the author's sense of humor in his narration. As he moves through Europe through the Middle East and to Asia, Marshall's humor lessens as the culture of war becomes more dramatic in assessing the development of flags in these areas. Geographically, we go south of the equator to visit Africa and South America. What strikes me most are the similarities of flags in certain regions...i.e. Scandanavia and Central America. Finally, Marshall ends up with a chapter called, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" which features the Jolly Roger, the Olympics and the Rainbow Flag.Nicely ordered in accompaniment to the story are all the flags that the author discusses. It's a nice reference point to an unusual but important book. I highly recommend it.

A decent entry into a very sparse collection of books about flags. However, the effort seemed rushed and often times faulty or too little information was given.As an introduction to the study of flags it leaves too much unexplained or undefined for too long. As a serious book for those more 'in the know' about flags and vexillology (the study of flags) it doesn't have quite enough new to add. When you add to that the generally casual tone and voice of the author, its hard to know who this book is for.Overall, however, it is nice to have a new book to add to the library of any serious fan of flags, but if you are well versed in world flag lore and categorization, this may not have anything to say to you.

Simple but very clear explanations about the real symbolic meaning of the World's most famous flags. Would recommend this book for any IR or PolSci student.

Got this book for a gift. He loves it.

I enjoy Tim Marshall as an author and this book will really teach you some things.

This story of a garbage man cleaning up town is a pretty basic story with a predictable ending. It does have a lot of repetitious chanting that kids can join in on which makes it a good read for a family or class read aloud. It also highlights some basic sight words which can be used to plug in some beginning readers here and there. Pretty short overall so I’d recommend this for toddler and preschool aged kiddos. The kids seem to love it so I gave it 4 stars instead of three.

Trashy Town and Dig! are two books by Zimmerman & Clemesha that should be on every toddlers book shelf. The rhythm and routine of both of the above books are addictive to my 2.5 yo son. Toddlers totally dig the repetition, coming back to a line or two that that they can count on and join in with. Then they can answer if they think the "trash truck" is "full yet?" or not. Lol True story, I left my sons copy of Trashy Town on a shelf for his dad to read to him if he needed something to do and relax or whatever, but Dad didn't remember that and I didn't remember where I put it for 3 DAYS!!! This is bad...very bad. We are VERY poor right now, but I would have used my money to get another copy of TT. We finally found it this morning and are back to our daily TT reading of at the very least two times a day. And again...complete this thought with Dig! They like, totally go together man. Awesome books. Just picked up Digger Man, too and next will be..I think it's....Fire Engine Man and Train Man I believe. DISCLAIMER : I can't remember a darn thing! Lol

My daughter is in graduate school for Speech Language Pathology. She has to go weekly to a preschool and read to children. This book she said was a HUGE hit! She would definitely recommend!

My 2 year old son is currently obsessed with trash trucks so I wanted to add some garbage themed books to his library. I ordered this based on the reviews and was a little worried when it arrived and said on the book that it was recommended for 4 to 6 year olds, but my 2 year old loves it. It's repetitive and asks the question on every page "is the garbage truck full?" and every time my son screams "No!" There's a repetitive rhyming verse on every page as well that is something like "pick it up, crush it down, drive around the Trashy Town" and every time my son yells "crush it!" It's a wonderful, interactive book, and I enjoy it as much as my son does. The illustrations are simple but beautiful water colors.

Both of my kids (1 and 3) are happy to listen to this book multiple times in a row! It's a little repetitive for Mommy, but I love that they love it. We bought it for my son's trash truck birthday party and had the guests sign the inside... it was perfect for this because the illustrations provide plenty of solid-color space.

Love the book (he gets trash from firestations and places like that so it connects to other community helpers), fun repetition for pre-k, nice length of story, but the board book is way too tiny!

This was one of my favorite books to read aloud when I taught young children (3- and 4-year-olds), and is now my 20-month-old's favorite book. He sings the refrain all of the time, and loves to shout, "Drive around the Trashy Town!!" My former students used to call all of the sanitation workers who drove by our school "Mr. Gilly." This is a great, fun book to read aloud to young children.

I ordered this for my 1 year old who can't sit through other picture books and he sat through this!! This is a great young picture book with repeating words and phrases and its so cute to look at it. This would be a darling gift for a trash truck lover in your life! :)

I call Manhattan one of the five stars because along with Veritas Prep, Kaplan, The Princeton Review, and Magoosh they represent the top class, you do not go wrong with one of them.However, if I should pick one among, Manhattan Prep is probably my favorite for different reasons:The strategy they teach is almost score-proof;Their practice material almost always - if not always - is the one that most closely resembles the original content provided by the author of the official exams, being GMAT GRE or whatever you could imagine;Their tutors score in the 99% percentile score;Their offer to the students stretches to the best, in every aspect.With all this in mind, I have approached the new book, the newborn, the newcomer with such enthusiasm. No really, I am so passionate to exams such as GRE and GMAT that when new material comes out and as it turns out it could give me a new insight, a new hint, a unique perspective to tackle the exam, well, I am so happy. Eventually, I went through the book in one breath. I have to admit it is a kilometric book. I bought in Kindle edition, but I do not want to imagine to bring it with me around: over seven hundred pages - a tome. They have condensed what was divided into several books in the previous version - Manhattan Prep GRE Set of 8 Strategy Guides - in one huge brick.Before we had the book of algebra, the publication of word problems but now we have all these in one spot called unit. In the same unfolding of the books aforementioned.According to the same company, this book is "The content in the new Manhattan Prep GRE Math Strategies is an updated version of the math content in the Manhattan Prep GRE Set of 8 Strategy Guides." Unfortunately, this is not correctly true, if not at all. I have scanned the entire book from the cover to the acknowledgments, and the only difference I have spotted is the missing table about what to do and what do not with inequalities (it was so useful as a recap for the student to bear in mind).For the rest, if you compare every single book of the previous version with this book side by side, not a comma is changed. No a single question or example to teach, to mastery, to consolidate every unique concept exam-related is new. ALL IS THE SAME. This book is exactly the mirror of the previous book sets. On top of that, things get worse when we reach the end of the book: in the earlier version, we had the drill sets to cement every single math concept, strategy, tips taught you along the way. Moreover, we had the practice question sets in which the questions had been divided into easy/medium/hard level of difficulty and the questions itself were amazing. Everything was perfect (or almost).In this new version, all this have been faded out. Completely. Gone. With much my surprise, I must admit. It is a real step behind, almost a Waterloo for Manhattan Prep, considering when it comes out with a new product the attention to the details, the high stringent standards they use both to craft the theory and the practice to provide the top-notch material overall. Of course, we cannot pretend that from one book to a new release an overhaul comes into play, this is impossible. Unless the exam itself is not changed (the last GRE shift was in 2011) most of the books are good for years to come. However, in this case, the amount of money that the students should spend on this new-old version is not justified.For those who do not have the previous set of books, I would certainly buy this. Having all that Manhattan offers in one book is convenient and easy to use. However, who has already the previous release, is time to look somewhere else. I have no sophisticated math education credentials (unlike one of my impressive fellow reviewers of this text), however, the authors do. Obviously. My own background is applied engineering and I do know working math and test taking. This is an excellent preparation or review tool, moving the student from the unknown to the known. Clear explanations and logic is shared along with the problem solving examples and exercises. Not familiar with previous editions, but this appears to be an outstanding GRE math resource.

What a great book. Manhattan Prep keys on the people who had scored in the top 1% for their strategies in taking the math portions of the GRE. You get a lot of practice in this book and, just as importantly, strategies for efficiently taking the exam.

Duke is on TV almost as much as Sponge Bob. I've probably missed five games in twenty-five years (including my time at Duke). After reading this book, I've missed all of them. The behind-the-scenes, locker-room perspective on how Coach K motivates players is powerful and moving. His preparation for each game centers less on the opponent and more on singling out one player on his own team to lift that player's game. His simple, direct message gets through."Next Play," "Confidence Breeds Courage," "Collective Responsibility" and other catch-phrases of K's apply not only to basketball but to business and to life.How many coaches after winning the National Championship would bring their team back into the locker room two days later to remind them that the Lessons of the Fist (for what those are you have to read the book) apply not only to basketball but to life? How many, in the same meeting, would goad their players to excel not only on the basketball court but in the classroom and in life?This is a book to treasure.

In Five Point Play, Coach Mike Krzyzewski tries to teach the 2001 Duke basketball team about not only basketball, but life too. By setting examples for the team, Coach shows his players the results of communication, trust, care, responsibility, and pride, the same points that helped them win the national championship. "Coach K" has a crew of talented coaches and players that include Shane Battier, Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer and many more. I like the way that Coach Krzyzewski put this book together, by explaining every pep talk, describing every huddle, and giving the details of every game. Although I wouldn't recommend this book to a North Carolina fan, I hope that every other basketball fan gets a chance to read Five Point Play.

As an avid Duke fan I may be a bit biased, but I felt the book was great with a lot of good insight into the behind the scenes day to day operation of a big time college basketball program. Showing how Coach K relates to each individual in a unique way is interesting.

Book review of "Five-Point Play" "Five-Point Play" by Mike Krzyzewski with Donald T. Phillips is an inspirational story of Dukes journey to the 2001 National Championship. Through the book you will find Coach K's schemes that helped lead the team towards their goals. Also the way he connects his players and his own emotions towards the journey in the book is very entertaining. There are many things I enjoyed about the book, but one thing I liked a lot about it was how often he used personal quotes from himself, other coaches, and players to connect you with there journey. Such quotes like at the end of the book after they have won the championship he says, "I just tried to sing my own song for this year's performance and not worry about things. It made me healthier and helped me coach for the right reasons. I had the most incredible year that I've had with a group of kids. I can't stop smiling." You can always get media and other people's opinions on what happened, but when you get there personal quotes, you can actually see what they went through to reach their goals. Another reason I loved reading the book was discovering Coach K's elaborate plans and schemes to get players to build off each other and off their situations. But his main principle is the "Five-Point Play"; Communication, Trust, Collective Responsibility, Caring, and Pride. He has many other amazing schemes, but to get into detail you would have to read it yourself. Those are just a few reasons why you could get to liking this book. It's a very inspirational journey and you can find tools that Coach K uses for yourself in everyday life. Also you're never going to loose background or information in the story because of all the personal quotes and information. It is a very enjoyable book and I recommend it.

Coach K relives the 2000-2001 championship season. Future NBA players Shane Battier and Mike Dunleavy lead Duke to wins over Maryland and Arizona to win his third national championship. Sorry to be sparse on details, but it's been almost 15 years since I read it.Duke fans, it's just past Coach K's 1000th victory, why not get this now?

Five-Point Play is the perfect companion to the 2000-2001 Basketball Season. I received the book from Amazon two days ago, and managed to read it in just a couple of hours. The book is a blow-by-blow account of how the Blue Devils grew and matured during its championship run. Five-Point Play is written in the same style as the ESPNMAG article that was written from Coach K's perspective.Although I don't think one has to read "Leading with the Heart" to enjoy this book, I do think that one's enjoyment is definitely elevated by doing so. A lot of what Coach K emphasizes in Five-Point Play has distinct echoes from his previous book. Such important lessons as communication, trust, collective responsibility, caring, etc. are big themes that he re-emphasizes to the team. However, the primary difference is that in this book, Coach K follows the season in chronological order, with descriptions of practices and in-game situations. There are also several quotes from the players, coaches and staff that are inserted during these situations that further illuminate the different perspectives on the team. Perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the book describe, in great detail, the team's psyche when Carlos suffered his foot injury and the team's subsequent shift in offensive and defensive strategies. In reality, there was a signifcant amount of doubt that the team would be able to be competitive by practically everyone on the team-- including Coach K! Fortunately, the Duke Blue Devils overcame this obstacle (among many others) and surged towards the National Championship.
