It disturbed me days after reading the passages. As much as this book being unique, I still wish that I never had read those passages. The 80s: a time period defined by surface, cut throat capitalism, Reagan economics, Wall Street, cocaine, AIDS, night clubs, awesome pop music, and serial killers. This is the setting of Bret Easton Ellis’s most controversial novel, American Psycho, which when published in 1991, garnered an F review in Entertainment Weekly, put Ellis on the FBI’s watchlist, and infuriated a radical feminist named Tara Baxter.American Psycho is about the infamous Patrick Bateman--Wall Street yuppie--whose extracurricular activities included clubbing; snorting coke; dining at New York City’s finest restaurants; purchasing overpriced sunglasses, suits, brief cases, bottled water, Walkman headphones; and murdering prostitutes, animals, co-workers, and the homeless.With graphic and detailed descriptions that include sadomasochism, decapitations, eviscerations, dismemberment, and torture, it is no wonder American Psycho garnered so much controversy. In today’s culture (that has created a genre of film called torture porn), such a novel would probably not get national attention. But in 1991, before the novel was even published, the controversy was nearly as hostile as the protagonist. Most of American Psycho’s criticism has come from the fact that it depicts scenes that are disgusting, vile, crude, and immoral. What these critics fail to mention is that the novel itself is a looking-glass, reflecting a society that is itself disgusting, vile, crude, and immoral. What the novel does not do, to any extent, is shy away from truth or sugarcoat the ugliness of a society obsessed with surface and possessions; a society overcome by greed. In the late 70s and in the 80s, America experienced a string of serial killers (Bundy, Gacy, and Manson), that both terrified and fascinated Americans. Nothing quite captures America’s attention like murder. And this is exactly why Patrick Bateman, the antihero of the novel, is a serial killer set in a time period gripped with greed and fear.Patrick Bateman is not the only sociopath in the novel. In fact, they populate the streets of New York City, the law firms, the finest restaurants and clubs. They are soulless individuals who do not care about others, only advancing themselves, only possessing, and accumulating more wealth. They are individuals who use others to their own advantage. In American Psycho, they are Wall Street yuppies, the upper class, the Marxist bourgeoisie--who destroy and use the unfortunate (homeless, prostitutes, children) so they can live in excess.One reoccurring theme throughout the novel is that Patrick Bateman and his yuppie friends often mistake their co-workers for other co-workers, since there is no distinct individuality, only conformity to an ideal surface. No one really knows who anyone else is; as Patrick Bateman states, “Inside doesn’t matter." They are so self-absorbed that they do not take time to notice anyone outside themselves or their possessions, unless a source of ridicule or competition. Patrick Bateman, competing for the Fischer Account (which is never clearly explained, except for the fact that it is the best account), literally axes a co-worker named Paul Owen in the face, in order to get ahead. Talk about cut throat capitalism!The graphic, deplorable scenes of violence in Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho serve a purpose: to illustrate the inhumanity of a society that puts its value in objects instead of people. Or rather, treats people as objects. The murders and the sex scenes are not the only thing described in pornographic detail. Patrick Bateman is a character sick with obsession; obsession with all the wrong things. In many scenes, Bateman describes, in pornographic detail, his wardrobe, his apartment, brands of bottled water, his music collection, the food at his favorite restaurants. These are the things that consume not only Patrick, but his cohorts. In fact, one could say that a surface obsessed society creates monsters like Bateman. In a society gripped by fear, whose only solace is found in possessing and dominating, there is nowhere to go but down: into madness, psychosis; anything to try and feel, to escape the void. In a chapter entitled “Tries to Cook and Eat Girl,” Ellis underlines the only real thing that can fill the void:Bateman attempts to turn a dead girl into meat loaf, but then he starts to cry: “The smell of meat and blood clouds up the condo until I don’t notice it anymore. And later my macabre joy sours and I’m weeping for myself, unable to find solace in any of this, crying out, sobbing ‘I just want to be loved’” (Ellis 345). This scene is gross and disturbing, but in some sick, morbid way—you may feel empathy for Patrick. There is only one thing that can fill the hole in Bateman’s consumer-obsessed soul: love. But, living in the society in which he does, love is an illusory concept, just like truth, compassion, and morals. In this society, there is only one truth: nothing matters—except money. In this society, there is no love and there is no escape from one’s emptiness.

I decided to give this book a chance based on the reviews. This is the 1st and last book I will read from this author. I will not make that mistake again ha ha. Throughout the entire book there were way too many characters introduced that had nothing to do with the book. I never figured out what Patrick actually did for a living or if it was even a "real" job. Probably 30% of the book was describing what people were wearing. The types of fabric and the clothing designer was explained...it got SO old and tiresome. Patrick's criminal mind didn't even make sense. If he did do all these deplorable killings over that long of time, the NYPD would have been all over him. The only thing believable is this author has a sick and twisted mind and should not be left alone with females. Save your money, I just summed up the entire book for you!!

An incredible indictment of the American tendency to be excessive in all things. The tale was inspired by Yuppie culture of the 1980s, though Patrick Bateman's dead soul transcends all eras. (Patrick Bateman is out there today, as vapid as ever, though he's probably much more evil... and his mobile phone is no doubt much smaller.)Throughout the story Bateman hypnotically drones on and on about brand names, designers, furnishings, status symbols, pop music, numbing us (and himself) to the moments of sheer terror, gore and sexual violence that punctuate the book. The fashion houses, the expensive restaurants (with their corny fusion cuisine, each concept funnier than the next) and the fellow stockbrokers are all interchangeable. Don't pay too much focus trying to differentiate the characters. Nobody else in the book can either. Bateman is frequently mistaken for someone completely different, just as he frequently names others incorrectly. In the end it helps him carry on his double life for much longer than he otherwise could have.The story is populated by a nameless swarm of bored big spenders, unhappily socializing in 1980s NYC. Patrick is different though. His mind is not right. He cruelly murders homeless people, prostitutes, small dogs...escalating to kill people from within his circle of friends. His taste in music is crap.This book made my blood run cold, yet I was unable to put it down. Bret Easton Ellis is an incredible writer, bringing us into this highly deviant mind.

This book reminds me of the 1990s sitcom Seinfeld, described as “A Show About Nothing.” Like the characters in Seinfeld, the Wall Street crowd the protagonist runs with are hip, shallow and self-absorbed creatures. Anyone in NYC can ignore the homeless, but why not demonstrate your callous disregard by holding out a crisp bill and pulling it away at the last moment as you walk by in your Armani suit. Oh, I get the dark humor, the social indictment, the vacuous preoccupation with designer labels and the latest trendy restaurant. But unlike Seinfeld, the book’s humor wore thin with repetition and also repetition. Honestly I had a hard time finishing this one

Written for lawyers but entirely understandable for laymen. Really drives home the importance of jury selection.

On The Jury TrialI was at a lull in a constellation of litigation and someone pointed me to this book. I have retired from public life, and am now become a law student, and of necessity a pro se litigant or litigation adviser to others at no charge. My handbook for pro se litigants requires two books - The Holy Bible, and Blackstone's Commentaries. Proper study of these two books, and the most recent Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, will equip one with the equivalent of a Harvard education of 1850, and you will not be disadvantaged in any courtroom proceeding. For extra credit, or just plain entertainment, listen to George Gordon's Hour of Power, and get an edge.I have not previously encountered such a book as this one. Presenting your story to the jury has been quite simply a learn-as-you-go process. You may practice for thirty-eight years and never encounter a jury. You may encounter a jury every week for thirty-eight years, and if you are fortunate you may learn what you are able to read in this book in four hours. In thirty-eight years, you will have thirty-eight years invested, and your clients will have several hundred dollars invested. And as they say, one learns more from losing than winning.If you are a pro se litigant, read this book. It is now Book Three in my syllabus. If you are a professional attorney already, don't waste your time. You have many important things to do today. I hope we meet up in court sometime.

Condensing years of experience into entertaining and understandable anecdotes is a nearly impossible task; however, Tom Melsheimer and Judge Craig Smith were able to do just that. They have seen it all when it comes to jury trials. Not only have they mastered the procedural elements, but they have mastered the key ingredients for helping us all present our thoughts and arguments in the most effective way possible (in ways that are also helpful to non-lawyers). For years, they worked tirelessly on this book – swapping war stories, reviewing transcripts, and putting pen to paper on some of the concepts they spent their entire career perfecting. It covers the basics, but then adds insight and invaluable tips from two top lawyers who have spent their careers in the trenches. Lawyers spend hundreds of dollars to attend CLE programs for a fraction of the useful information contained in this book. If you want real continuing legal education, read this book.

One of the most practical trial books I have ever read. As a Civil Trial specialist certified in Civil Trial Law by the Board of Legal Specialization, I have not read a book before that dissects trial transcripts and identifies both good and bad practice tips on real lawyer examples like this book does. As a managing partner of my firm I have bought this for all my trial attorneys and highly recommend any civil trial practitioner (no matter what the experience) to read!

Salient advice. Easy to digest. Excellent read. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to increase their efficiency and effectiveness in the courtroom (which should be everyone, right?). The authors' use of real trial transcripts to drive home techniques really sets this book apart. Also a fun read for anyone who's simply curious about what the courtroom is really like.

This book is a thorough, yet easily digestible, guideline that can and should be used by law students, practitioners, professors, or anyone else looking to learn the best practices when advocating during a jury trial. This book is unique in that it details the perspective of not only the trial attorney, but also the perspective of a judge.

She didn't belong to her adoptive parents, she didn't belong to her birth parents, she didn't belong to her public school because she was so religious and she didn't belong to her church because she was a lesbian. Ever run across a book and an author that just bends your mind? This is how I felt as soon as I started the audio unabridged version of this book, and so had to buy the paperback as well. It is read by the author and what a reading it is. I cannot remember when I have delighted in a book as much as I have this one and especially the vocal done by the author herself.It's a hard story. Much of the early part is a little hard to take, but sometimes it seems that people go through tough things and come out stronger on the other end. This seems to be the case with the woman who took charge of her education at Cambridge, and then became the author of many books, one of which became a TV presentation.Having never heard of Jeanette Winterson made it all the more interesting. There is such talent out in the world that we've never heard of and when we find them, when they touch us with that special touch, we are instantly changed for the better. Since I am a huge audible.com fan and am constantly downloading books there, this book was a recommendation by them and I'm so glad they did.I delighted in virtually every word, every inflection, and how love prevails, even when it doesn't seem like love. It all depends on our perspective.I cannot recommend this book enough and especially the unabridged audiobook. Bravo!

Jeanette Winterson's way of describing the almost indescribable brought tears to my eyes more than once. All my life, I've searched for these words to describe being an orphan and, after that, being abandoned. The life of forever seeking a lost part of yourself, of not knowing how to love and the crippling, incapacitating fear of loss. The poetry of her language is breathtaking and I finished reading with a sigh...Jeanette Winterson understands and speaks for all the lost ones.

Even if, like me, you are not a fan of Jeanette Winterson, you might want to give this book a read. It's not your typical memoir, but then, Jeanette Winterson's story is not your typical biography either. She was adopted at six weeks of age as an only child living with a fanatically religious mother. Cruelty and sometimes isolation ensued (being tossed into the "coal hole" or left out on the doorstep overnight), certainly not the fare the average British child grows up having endure. But endure she does. In the end, the craziness of her upbringing becomes a rather dark gift -- one that Jeanette Winterson, herself, is willing to recognize when later she meets her biological mother and finds she cannot bear to hear the criticism heaped by her bio-mother on her monstrous adopted mother. I found this memoir more than touching -- for me it was a fascinating glimpse into working class England circa 1960s, it was a poignant and sometimes searing glance into the human soul -- this book vacillates between humor and horror, between pleaure and pain. In the end, we are left with a curiously optimistic view -- out of all of this adversity sprung a fully formed, successful author -- one whose underlying quality is that of absolute tensile strength.One is left to wonder, without that struggle to survive, what does a writer really have to write?(This review was not one of those Amazon reviews you've been reading about -- it was not paid for nor solicited -- I bought this book in a bookstore because I thought it looked interesting and I read it cover to cover.)

I ordered this book & want to say it was very well written & sincere. With all that Tami went through leaving this religion she still stayed positive about the people still within the religious organization. I think it is very hard when a person starts to persue different beliefs & religions to find the right place for them. The hardest thing is many "man-made" religions say they are right & only they are the true way. That can be very hard for the new Christian until they have read the Bible for themselves. Many religions take scripture out of context & twist for their own benefit - to get members into their organization. Many are very convicing if a person does not know their Bible & also high-pressure. Many use "good works" as a way to show they are good people - the Lord said, good works will not get you into the kingdom of Heaven. That does not mean good works are bad but there is a perfect example of twisting scripture. My personal feeling is to belong to no "man-made religion" - but I do not need to go into my personal beliefs here. The main point of Tami's book is to give a person a clear basic insite where & what this religion is all about. What happened to her personally while in it & also when leaving & afterward. She hits on very good areas & proof or where they are wrong according to the Bible. I think this book is a wonderful expression from a very strong woman that went through a lot personally to do what she knew was right & to stop being controlled by an organization. She paid a very big price for sure & easily could have lashed out but she didn't. She explained everything in a straight forward manner & simple way for people to understand the brain-washing that goes on. Hopefully people would read this book before getting too involved in this religion & truly question their doctrine. Also open their eyes to realize they need to anaylis & question any/all doctrine of an organization before joining. People in general like to belong, be accepted & feel secure & these groups address this & hook people in just that way. After time goes on it becomes extremely hard to get out. I encourage any & all folks to read this book if they are considering joining this religious group or just gaining a basic understanding of what they are all about. Hopefully also J.W.'s that are questioning will read it also & realize just what they are being told & believing & start thinking for themselves.

Unless someone has personally lived within the social circles of the Watchtower organization, it is next to impossible to understand the unique challenges that arise when the conscience of the individual conflicts with the imposed conscience of the Watchtower leaders upon its members. For those on the "outside" of the Watchtower organization, it is only too easy and convenient to label Jehovah's Witnesses as a cult or any number of the other derogatory terms that serve to understand the dynamics behind Watchtower membership even in the face of patently evident contradictions--especially in our modern day of rationality and reason. There is something about Jehovah's Witnesses that continues to draw people in regardless of the controversies.For non-Witnesses who hold the view that Jehovah's Witnesses are a "cult" and Jehovah's Witnesses who hold the view that non-Witnesses are "worldly," "bad association," and part of "false" Christianity, the lines are too easily and arbitrarily drawn into an over-simplified "us against them" mentality, without ever taking the necessary steps to understand the root cause of the problem.Even so, in her new book, Tami does an excellent job at portraying the subtler, more positive aspects of life among Jehovah's Witnesses that, if practiced on a much wider scale (rather than primarily amongst themselves, with the leftovers going to non-members), would impress upon others just how charitable and caring and clean-living Jehovah's Witnesses are capable of being. Unfortunately, as the book demonstrates, this IS, in fact, primarily limited to the membership itself, and practiced insofar as compliance with the directives of the Watchtower organization's leadership is maintained, first and foremost. The potential among Jehovah's Witnesses is there, but still manages to fall far short of the ideal--and yet the typical Witness thinks of this aspect of their religion as fine and acceptable before God.Tami takes the time to describe her life at home in such a way that the reader should be able to draw a reasonably clear picture of the demands on parents as they prepare their families for meetings, meeting participation, the challenges of having school-aged children when holidays are observed, and many other aspects of daily living (including association with non-Witnesses as childhood friends) that non-Witnesses may not be aware of apart from the common jokes and disdain held against Jehovah's Witnesses in general. There should be no question in the reader's mind by the time they finish those sections of the book where she talks about her parent's efforts to meet organizational obligations that the load is heavy and challenging.One issue in particular was her describing the drudgery for younger ones who are expected to sit quietly and keep themselves dutifully preoccupied whether it's during a meeting or an all-day assembly, rather than being placed in a more age-appropriate setting such as mainstream churches have for their younger attendees. In my own experience as a former Witness parent, I was actually relieved when my youngest children would fall asleep on the floor during a meeting or assembly or convention, because I felt so bad for them, and even my best efforts to try to make the enduring marathon of weekly meetings always seemed never enough.Tami also makes it a point to cover other aspects of Witness life, going into detail about the process by which someone becomes a member of the Watchtower organization and subsequently recognized as one of "Jehovah's Witnesses." Non-Witnesses and potential members alike will find the information accurate and surprisingly tedious; but as she points out, the reason for the process being so excessive is due to the emphasis on unity through uniformity, and this uniformity being based on doctrinal acceptance of Watchtower theology as published and practiced at the time that the potential member undergoes admission into the organization.She also does a wonderful job in describing the shifts in social acceptance within the congregation as the individual member first becomes one of Jehovah's Witnesses, and then changes based on that individual's responsiveness to and compliance with the organizational obligations, such as field service, meeting attendance, and participation in the meetings. Too, she touches on another aspect of life among Jehovah's Witnesses, when she describes how general members tend to view other members who hold particular stations, ranging from pioneers to elders to circuit overseers, up to and including those congregations who discover that they have an "anointed" brother or sister among them. Perhaps the hardest thing to come to terms with for Witnesses who suddenly find themselves at odds with the Watchtower organization is that the "Christian" love that they have touted and practiced and been shown for perhaps their entire lives is, in fact, strictly conditional and controlled by organizational stipulation, intended to control and manipulate the members into conformity, under the guise of "unity."Tami's coverage of the range of topics in the book are sound and personalized in such a way that the reader can't help but realize that she is speaking from experience. Scattered throughout the earlier sections of the book are her side thoughts which she comes back to later in the book as she begins to relate her own crisis of individual conscience and how it eventually but inevitably led to her own disfellowshipping (excommunication) from the Watchtower organization. Here, too, Tami makes sure to take the time to describe the disciplinary process within the organization so that the reader, who may not know about this, can perhaps better understand what it means to a Witness who finds themselves cut-off from everyone they may have known their entire lives, even one's own spouse and children in many cases.The last part of the book (not counting the appendices) is used to relate her own struggles as she came to terms with life outside of the organization. Here, again, it is impossible for a non-Witness to truly comprehend this unique, challenging stage of healing, although Tami's narrative does a respectable job of what she did in her particular situation. What worked for her may not work for the next person, unfortunately. But having a loving, compassionate support mechanism of some sort is of the utmost importance, regardless, and I think Tami makes that point clear. Thankfully, Tami was able to find her means of spiritual and social support throughout her healing process. Tragically, there are countless others who are not so fortunate.Without question, Tami's book is a much-welcomed and appreciated personal account, and I feel privileged to have been able to read it in book form, having known her for years now through online forums and her personal website. I am painfully aware that this review is far too brief, for there is much more I would have liked to touch upon from her book, and I worry that I am not doing Tami justice by my brevity.Still, I hope that others take the time to read this book, especially those who are right now feeling isolated, alone, and discouraged because of their own crisis of individual conscience, and who may have been cast from the ranks of the Watchtower organization, from perhaps the only life they have ever known.--Timothy Kline

I lost a marriage due to JW. I met my future wife in AA. After five years of marriage and sobriety, she decided to return to JW and quit AA. AA is base on H. O. W. which stands for honesty openness and willingness. JW is not HOW. It cost me $90,000 and my house to get away from the cult, but was worth every penny. The book help me understand many aspects of JW that only a long time member would have knowledge from her experiences. I regret ever having any experience with that cult.

Many grammatical errors and places where the text just ends, then starts somewhere else. Still, one can read around such things. I'd like to see some of the missing material in Chapters 10, 11 and 12. The author comes away from her experience still believing many of the JW's false doctrines. She would do well to take some comparative religion classes and talk to people from other religions regarding doctrines like soul sleeping, etc.There are many questions this book answers. I was amazed that the sect discourages higher education, but it doesn't surprise me. Education and interaction with others outside their religion are the two biggest threats to the Society. Their Bible translation is widely regarded as being a joke. It's never used in comparative translations and only members of the WBTS would use it.

As a former jw, I can tell you that everything that this author has written about the organization, it's practices and its beliefs is 100 percent accurate.

I was also raised as one of "Jehovah's Witnesses." The book revealed a remarkable parallel to my own life. Tami Dickerson, you just plain nailed this one. Good job. It is nice to know i am not alone...
